Resolve in 2016 to be More Involved with Your Synagogue

This Year, Be a Mensch!

Like you, TINT works hard to stretch our budget to meet increas-ing costs of utilities, maintenance, healthcare for our paid employees (2), religious school registration and emergency repairs. One way you can do a mitzvah (most likely a tax-deductible one) is to become a Mensch Member of our congregation. A Mensch goes over and above what is expected of the average person for the good of others. In this case, it means making a one-time or monthly payment over and above your regular dues commit-ment. We are fortunate to have many people who have stepped up and become Mensch Members, but we need more. Mensch: $613 over and above your dues. Silver Mensch: $1,800 over dues. Gold Mensch: $3,600 over dues. Your gift will go to reduce our debt, pay for operating costs, and add to planned improvements, among other things.

Won’t you “Mensch Up” in 2016?

Attend the Annual

Congregational Meeting

Sunday, Jan. 24th 9:15 a.m.

Don’t sit on the sidelines in 2016 and let other people make decisions for you.

Come to the Temple Israel Ner Tamid Annual Congregational Meeting and hear what’s been happening behind the scenes of your synagogue, and what is planned for the future.

We will also present the 2015 President’s Award to Richard Freedman and Kim Singerman.

Find out how our last May’s Gala at the Rock Hall did, and what is going to be the fabulous fundraiser planned for 2016 (you’re going to love it!).

Bring your questions for the Officers and Committee Heads. Participate in voting for new and continuing Board members (voting restricted to TEMPLE MEMBERS in good standing).

Doors will open for a light nosh at 9:15 a.m. The meeting will begin around 9:30 a.m and conclude by 11:30 a.m.

Rabbi’s Message: It is rare to leave my parents’ house empty-handed. In their effort to divest themselves of clutter and treasure, they send me home with books, pictures, bags of tchotchkees, electronic equip-ment, unopened items they never used (and hope I will), and so

on. Recently, as I sifted through a bag in the corner of my study, I came across an anonymous clipping from one of my father’s miscellaneous files. It was not clut-ter. It was treasure. The 10 sentiments in the clipping I have expanded upon to make “18 resolutions for 2016.” From Judaism I have learned: 1) God created us as neutral beings, not good or bad. We are defined by our behaviors more than our beliefs. Our actions are characterized as good actions or bad actions. We should strive to do good deeds and to do deeds which devolve to the benefit of others. 2) We have infinite potential for goodness and self-betterment. Some good deeds are exceedingly difficult to do. Other good deeds may even be danger-ous to do, but life is not supposed to be easy, it is supposed to be meaningful. 3) The meaning of life is to help others. When we help others we put our lives into clearer perspective. When we help others we think less about ourselves and more about improving the world which God created for us. Be grateful and count your blessings. 4) We are Israelites. The name Israel means “one who struggles with God.” Our lot is to struggle and do our best. This struggle is the mark of a decent person. Your first, and most intimate struggle, is with yourself. 5) We are God’s “chosen people.” (see Exodus 19:6) Being “chosen” is not a mark of superiority it is a mark of responsibility. We have been given a spe-cial responsibility to carry the Torah, be a Holy People, share the Torah, and be an example as a “light unto the nations.” (Isaiah 42:6) 6) In 1946, Viktor Frankl wrote Man’s Search for Meaning. In his post-holocaust thoughts, he said there are only two races in the world: the decent and the indecent. Be among the decent, be a mensch. 7) The world is broken in many places — pain and suffering abound. We are called upon to repair the world of this brokenness. Tikun Olam means “repair the world.” Acts of kindness (chesed) and tzedakah (righteous acts) are always in order. Start with your family, then your congregation, and expand outward. 8) We are commanded to care for the poor, the widow, the orphan, and the stranger. Remember, we were outcasts many times during our history. We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt and those living memories form an essential part of what it means to be a Jew. We recall our slavery every year during the Passover Se-der. Throughout the world, slavery stills exists today and we must fight it. 9) Good intentions coupled with action may rescue people, save lives, and bring about wonderful results. Good intentions coupled with action may also bring about tragic results. Rationally deliberate upon the consequences of your actions, especially when you feel passionately about the issue at hand. 10) Be a supporter of the land and people of Israel. Israel is the “Promised Land” of the Jewish people. It is a Jewish State which counts Arabs, Druze, Chris-tians, Muslims, and others among the citizenry. Our ancestors prayed and dreamed of her re-establishment. It was a 2,000 year old dream which saw Israel’s re-establishment in 1948. Israel is not perfect, but she is the best place to live in the entire Middle East. Our ancestors were dedicated to the dream. How about us? 11) Be a loyal, grateful, and engaged citizen of our country. This country has been a tremendous blessing for the Jewish people and other peoples.

The IsraeLight

From Our Education Director

By Edna Akrish, BJS, MSM What a wonderful and busy school year we had so far at TINT religious school! Just before the ending of our first marking period and before winter break, our younger students "produced" real and pure Olive oil during the "Olive Oil Factory" workshop- just in time for Chanukah. Our older students went on a guided tour to the Maltz museum to see the amazing exhibit of "Violins of Hope". The aroma of fried Latkes ( Levivot in Hebrew) filled our school when the students — with help from teachers and volunteering parents — made them for all to enjoy! We lit the first Chanukah light in school - and played dreidel (Svi'von in Hebrew) with Yuval - the Israeli emissary who comes to visit us from time to time. A Chanukah party followed our learning sessions in class about the history and custom of this holiday. Rabbi Schneerson, the great Lubavitz leader said: "Every Jewish person must spend a half hour every day thinking about values and education of children, and do everything in his power — and beyond his power — to inspire children to follow the path along which they are being guided - to make them just, honest, peace seekers, fulfilled and

helpful people". I can assure you that, with the remarkable leadership of OUR rabbi and the outstanding faculty at TINT, your

children are getting a very warm, "hands on" and valuable Jewish education - with our love to Israel and our wonderful heritage. We are looking forward to seeing everyone after the winter break on January 10th, as a great second school period is planned ahead! Stay tuned for more details regarding our new "Children Library" and the upcoming super trip for the upper class students!

Thank you for your partnership in helping us educate your children! Best wishes to you and your family, Edna

From the President’s Desk

By Gerald Strom This time of the year gives us our second opportunity for recounting and taking stock of our lives. We recently celebrated

Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, now we are in the final month of our secular year. As we are all too aware, we are be-ing inundated with e-mails and snail mails requesting that we consider a very wide range of organizations and causes that are competing for our financial attention. Our commitment to one of our key values, Tzedakah, is truly being tested. I would like this message to serve as a reminder that our Temple is also in need of your strong consideration for both volunteer and financial support. This year marked a major reclassification of our dues structure by your Board of Trustees. This group worked very diligently to devise a structure that better addresses our congregation. Along with this new structure we have remained committed to working with each congregant to devise a plan that would address their financial concerns. On the other hand we have a special category for individuals who wish to consider giving more than “fair share”. You can be a “Mensche” member by increasing your dues. We have had some success in both these ven-tures. To meet our ongoing needs, we must do better! That being said, our need to meet our expenses and to give you the opportunity to recognize life events, celebra-tions and times of sadness need to continue to grow as we move forward. I would like to remind you that your Temple needs and wants your participation to the extent that you feel addresses your individual value of Tzedakah. There are multiple funds that have been established that help support specific areas of interest. We provide you with opportunities to sponsor programs that mark holidays as well as events enjoyed by congregants: St. Al’s monthly dinner, PB&J, Passover Seders, Sukkot, Friday evening Onegs, to name a few. These opportunities are there for us all. Please consider being a part in our ongoing need to meet our financial obligations, as we remain committed to our Jewish values.

You’re never too old to learn!

Adult Education Classes: Free and Open to All

She’elot v’Teshuvot During the High Holy Days, Rabbi Matt began a new program: “She’elot v’Teshuvot—Questions and Answers.” He encouraged people to submit questions, and he would prepare textual sources for lecture and discussion. He has received several ideas for topics. Meeting one Wednesday per month, this discussion group will meet from 6:30-7:45 p.m. at TINT, with some kind of nosh and coffee and tea. Please “dust off” your Bible and bring it. January 6th: Do Jews believe in life after death? What is it like? Do we

believe in heaven and hell? What do you mean, “God takes care of us.” February 3rd: Is there a Jewish view of wealth? Can you compare it to

other religions’ views? What is a Jewish perspective on “naming rights” as a way to be compensated for donations? Is this an appropriate way to be recognized. Why are so many Jewish names on buildings: Ego? A need for validation? Fear? Does “naming” a building dovetail with Tzed-akah?

There will be more classes in the spring. Rabbi Matt is still accepting ques-tions and topics. These classes are free and open to everyone, teenagers and up.

“Bagels and Bible” meets on Religious School Sundays from 10:15-11:30 a.m. for a bit of learning and a nosh. Coming up: January 10, 2016: Cantor Larry Josefovitz January 17: No Religious School due to Martin Luther King Day January 24: No B&B due to Annual Congregational Meeting January 31: Rabbi Fred Eisenberg

“BLT - Begin Learning Torah” meets on the first two Mondays of the month, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Our next dates are January 4th and 11th; Febru-ary 1st and 8th; March 7th and 14th.

“A Taste of Judaism” with Rabbi Matt will study the concepts of God, Torah and Israel. Classes will meet Wednesday evenings, January 13, 20 and 27 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Come to one or come to all. In March, we will pro-gress to “A Feast of Judaism” for a look at the Jewish calendar, holidays and lifecycle events. Those dates: March 2, 9 and 16; April 6, 13 and 20.

Come and enjoy this 6-course spiritual and intellectual “meal”. Both classes are FREE and open to everyone, Jewish or not. Call Sherry Kaufman at the Jewish Education Center of Cleveland at 216-371-0466 to register. Each class is self-contained, so you can miss one and still learn a lot.

“Yahrzeits” from page 1

remember a loved one on the Hebrew date, and another on the English date. We will accommodate both, as indicated in your membership records. NOTE: Berkowitz Kumin Memorial Chapel sends out yahrzeit notices for funerals arranged through them ONLY for the Hebrew date. We have nothing to do with those letters. The TINT office generates the weekly yahrzeit list off our records of what you, our congregants, want done. In addition: 1. We will now post the weekly

yahrzeit list each Friday on the small lectern in the back of the Sanctuary. Those are the names that will be read by Rabbi Matt that evening. Feel free to add a name if you wish.

2. If you unable to attend services when a loved one’s name is scheduled to be read, call the office, and we will gladly add it to a week when you will be present.

3. The yahrzeit list in the bi-monthly IsraeLight is generated by the same software as our weekly list. We will post the names from the IsraeLight by the lectern in the back of the Sanctuary for you to review.

Remember, we do not automatically add yahrzeits to individual lists. You must call the office to add a name/date of death. If you have any questions about when one of your yahrzeits will be observed, don’t hesitate to call the Temple office (440-473-5120) and ask. We will look up your records and let you know.

Rabbi’s Message, continued from page 2 12) When we lead our lives in the proper way, we can see sparks of God’s presence all around us, even in the most unexpected places. 13) Some of the best experiences in life are those which allow us to af-firm the love of family, and friends. 14) We should sow, reap, utilize and enjoy the world, while also taking care of her. It is for these reasons God created us. Enjoy the earth’s bounty… take care of God’s creation, and all of His creations. 15) When we bind ourselves to the Jewish community, we are enriched and we enrich others. We have others with whom to share happy times and sad times. We give support and receive support. 16) Torah study helps develop one’s mind, body and spirit. We realize many others have walked the paths upon which our journeys take us. We learn from their wisdom and experience. Study and prayer develops a soulfulness about you. We are commanded to engage in the study of Torah as adults and as chil-dren. This past fall, with little fanfare, we began providing Religious School Edu-cation without any registration fees. At our congregation, Religious Education is so important that we consciously decided to forgo the fees and open up schooling to every member family. We hope this will be a viable model. We hope it will set us apart as a congregation of menschen. 17) What you feel, think, and believe matters. But what you do is more important and matters more. 18) We reach the final resolution with the number 18. The word “chai” means “life.” The word “chai” has the numerical value of 18. Remember to live life with a smile on your face. It is among the first things people respond to and notice about you. Often it is not easy to smile, but smile anyway. People respond better to a smiling face than a sad face. L’chaim “to life!” Pat joins me in sending warm regards for health, happiness, and God’s blessings in 2016. Shalom.

Literally Tons of Tzedakah

By Brett Lipton, Head of the PB&J Committee

It has been seven-plus years since we started PB&J, “Peanut Butter and Judaism.” It has been a huge success. We have averaged 960 sandwiches a month, and as many as 550 in a single Friday night. The math comes to about 87,000 sandwiches since we started. But that is not all we have done. We have also delivered an average of 130 pounds of other food items — such as pastries, cookies, fruit and bottles of water — to individuals and families on the streets, as well as to homeless and domestic violence shelters, sober houses, halfway homes, mental health facilities, churches and food pantries. That comes to about 20 tons!

We could not have done this without the generous dona-tions from Panera Bread, Heinen’s, Giant Eagle, Bialy’s, On the Rise Bakery, Chick-Fil-A, Woolf Farms and TINT con-gregants.

We rely on hundreds of congregants and non-congregants over the years to physically make the sandwiches. We also have TINT members who drive the food donation deliveries weekly to the underprivileged around the Metro Cleveland area.

This tzedakah project was the brainchild of Peter Freimark, and though I now run the Friday night sandwich program, Peter still has a large hand in it.

We don’t just accept food donations to the program. From fall to spring, we need blankets, gloves, jackets, winter hats and scarves for the unfortunate on the street. And, as al-ways, we can never have enough creamy (not natural) peanut butter, jam (not jelly) and quart-size zip-top bags.

I would like to thank all those who have made this en-deavor possible, and ask for the help of every congregant in the future. Hopefully we can continue providing help to those in need for another seven years and beyond!

Shimon the Shul Mouse says:

Do not ask God to guide your footsteps, if you’re not willing to move your feet.
