January/February 2017 Tevet/Shevat/Adar 5777 Volume 21, Issue 1 From Our Spiritual Leader Cantor Henry Shapiro Soup I’ve been cooking up some soup for the shul once a month over the winter. I started doing that for myself a number of years ago. The first time I made Mushroom/Barley soup, it was so simple and good that I made it over and over that winter. I thereafter began trying out some new hearty soup or stew recipe every year that would help me get through the season and built up my own little recipe cookbook. There is no biblical Hebrew word for soup per se. Most people know the story of Esau in Parsha Toldot selling his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of food. In fact, in that Hebrew passage, Esau only asks for ha-adom ha-adom hazeh - that red, red stuff. Jacob serves him lechem unzid adashim, bread and lentil stew; it’s commonly thought it refers to red lentils because they’re red and cook up so quickly. The modern Hebrew word for soup is marak. The yiddish word for soup is zup. There’s all kinds of soup we think of as Jewish soups - borsht and cabbage for example - but the quintessential Jewish soup and ultimate comfort food is yoich, chicken soup. There’s also matzah ball soup with two versions of matzah balls, soft or hard. Growing up, my mother used to make it often for shabbat and holidays. She referred to hard matzah balls as ‘bullets’. So you can guess what we were served in our family. There are many other references to food in the Bible. species’. The book of Deuteronomy 8:8 describes Israel as, “a land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and pomegranates; a land of olive oil and honey”. That’s not the only mention of food, of course. I did a quick search for other foods in the Bible and found the following different categories and kinds of food. 10 Spices 11 Fruits and Nuts 6 Vegetables and Legumes 8 Grains 6 Fish and Fowl 6 Animal meats 4 Dairy Other miscellaneous such as eggs, wine, vinegar, etc. As you can imagine, there are many many interesting books and articles about Biblical foods and Jewish recipes to be found in the library and online. Such as: A Biblical Feast: Foods from the Holy Land by Kitty Morse Jewish Soul Food: From Minsk to Marrekech By Janna Gur Jewish Soup's Up - The Forward Nine Great Soups Warm Up Coldest Winter Days http://forward.com/articles/151392/jewish-soups-up/ Not to mention our own PJC cookbook and many others in our library. Our final PJC Souper Shabbat will be on February 10th. B’Tayavon, (a good appetite), Cantor Henry Shapiro

From the President’s Desk………………………….Robert E. Korfin

We celebrated Martin Luther King’s birthday in January or did we? I ran into a municipal worker on Monday and I was surprised that he was working. Banks were close as was the Post Office. The guy had his own take on why he was not observing MLK day and it was racially motivated.

It must be a national holiday but the states have the right to modify how or by whom it gets celebrated. It’s all so wrong; I think everybody needs to have a hero.

Several months ago I wrote about “the Book of Life” that gets closed at Yom Kippur. That’s the book that tells who will live and who will move on to the next world. Well since then we’ve lost Marvin Tell, Betty Rapport, and Belva Schiff. Three wonderful people who left us too soon but who will never be forgotten.

Have you been to Oakland recently? It’s impossible to find a place to park. I even know a guy who bought a parked car….Ba dum bum.

Speaking of parking, the PJC lot is in poor shape right now. We had a bit of snow and when the guy came to plow the lot, he left his plow blade too low and it dragged all of our stones to the edges of the lot. So until the winter is over, our lot will be a combination of muddy, icy or possibly dry depending upon the amount of rain or snow we receive. New stones will be spread in the spring. So…when you come to shul for Shabbat Services, remember the lot and don’t wear your finest shoes.

President Trump was sworn in a few weeks ago. I bet attendance at Shabbat Services will pick up immediately. I’m just saying….

Did you ever have a party and nobody came? That seems to happen often around PJC. If you have a birthday in a particular month, it would be nice if you came to Shabbat Services so we can celebrate with you. And if sitting in shul isn’t your thing….there’s always cake.

By the way, Jews don’t pray to saints. I don’t think they are a part of Judaism. If they were, I would nominate Diane Bloomfield and Leslie Rubin. They are the very best and they know why. They are both PJC treasures.

So we got through December and we are now done with January. We’re not out of the woods yet, but hang on, we can get through this. If nothing else, next month pitchers and catchers will be reporting to spring training and then we’ll talk again…

Thanks to the PJC sisterhood for the surprising win of the Chai Club's $100 Mazel tov bond. Never having won anything that I had entered, this was a big shocker! As you know I have been a big supporter of Israel for the past 60 years, having helped raise thousands of dollars for the State of Israel. I was among the early pioneers in Pittsburgh helping to sell Israel Bonds through NA'AMAT USA (formerly known as Pioneer Women). Even have some charms that were presented to me at the beginning of the campaign, way back in the '50's. Still going strong in Florida for raising funds for Israel! With personal regards and a Happy New Year to all the members of the Sisterhood--may you all go from strength to strength in keeping the PJC strong and viable. Marjorie C. Moidel
