HIGHLIGHTS OF VIENNA SYMPHONIC ORCHESTRA vol.4

Volume 4 of the concert recordings ‘Springtime In Vienna’ is exclusively dedicated to Johann Strauss. His works are performed by an outstanding cast: the conductor Erich Leinsdorf (1912-1993) native Austrian, but spending most of his life in the United States, returned to his home country for this recording and took over the guidance of the cast. Standing by his side are famous soloists: soprano Helen Donath who originally came from America and made a big opera career in Europe and the German tenor Werner Hollweg – an established participant of the ‘Springtime In Vienna’ concert series.

The repertoire is divided in two parts; it starts with a very mixed programme. Here,, polkas, waltzes and the overture from the operetta ‘Waldmeister’ can be heard. Helen Donath performs the vocal versions of the waltz ‘Voices of Spring’ and the waltz ‘The Queen’s Lave Handkerchief’ (also entitled ‘Rosen aus dem Suden’), which are full of coloratures.

In addition, excerpts from the operetta ‘The Gypsy Baron’ are staged – the overture, the ‘Treasure Waltz’, the march and the famous duet ‘One Day We Were Young’. Finally, Erich Leinsdorf announces the encore – to the great pleasure of the audience: it is the ‘Emperor Waltz’.

SMETANA/GRIEGTHE MOLDAU/PEER GYNT SUITES/ BARTERED BRIDE

Music and beautiful landscapes: especially the romantic composers loved this combination, which inspired them to write their famous orchestral works.

One of the most beautiful examples for this is ‘The Moldau’: Czech master Bedrich Smetana describes in the form of a symphonic poem the way the river takes from its two sources to capital Prague. The beauty of the far North is portrayed in the music of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. ‘Morning’ from ‘Peer Gynt’ is actually one of the most popular classical works in the world.

This DVD combines wonderful music and striking pictures: fascinating landscapes from Bohemia accom-pany the excellent interpretation of Smetana’s ‘Moldau’. Impressions from Norway, music and forcible ballet choreography complement each other in Grieg’s ‘Peer Gynt’ suite.

In addition, the programme includes excerpts from the most famous Czech opera ‘The Bartered Bride’ by Bedrich Smetana. Moreover, this DVD offers informative introductions to this work as well as to ‘Peer Gynt’.

FRIEDRICH GULDAMOZART FOR THE PEOPLE

Friedrich Gulda was one of the most exciting and experimental pianists of the 20th century and the per-formance documented on this DVD reflects his great personality.

He spent the majority of his professional life focusing primarily on the works of Mozart. Gulda expressed that only through this intensive, decades-long exploration could one truly come to understand and appro-priately convey the real nature of Mozart’s compositions. After extensive studies in classical piano, Gulda began a career as an eccentric concert pianist in the mid-40’s. By the end of the 60’s he had also become deeply involved in jazz, playing piano and later, flute and baritone saxophone. He performed throughout the world as a soloist and orchestra leader, playing classical music and jazz, often at the same concert.

He wrote much of the music played by his orchestras, writing in both classical and jazz styles. In the 90’s his maverick personality led him to work with dance music DJ’s. His death was feigned in 1999, simply so that he could have a resurrection party. His confirmed death was as a result of a heart attack in January 2000.

THE SALZBURG MARIONETTE THEATREMOZART - THE MAGIC FLUTE

“The Magic Flute” is the core of the repertoire or world-famous Salzburg Marionette Theatre. In 1994, the version on hand was realized in collaboration with the TV stations ZDF and 3sat. Popular guest is one of the most renowned actors, directors and authors of our time: Sir Peter Ustinov shows his talents as gifted narrator and connoisseur of opera. His incidental remarks are fascinating comments on Mozart’s late masterpiece that compete in their expressiveness with the unique experiment of staging “The Magic Flute” as puppet play.

The playback for this, in the true sense of the word, captivating production is supplied by a top-class Mozart ensemble and the recording is an eminent document of the Salzburg Festivals: the soprano Rita Streich, one of the best Mozart interpreters of the post-war period “lends” her voice to the queen of the night, Ernst Haefliger sings Tamino. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, one of the most renowned baritones in the world takes the part of Papageno. As a special feature the DVD contains a backstage visit to the Salzburg Marionette Theatre.

THE SALZBURG MARIONETTE THEATREMOZART - THE ABDUCTION FROM THE SERAGLIO

Mozart’s “Abduction from the Seraglio” is the second release after the successful “Magic Flute” that presents a production of the Salzburg Marionette Theatre in cooperation with the TV stations ZDF and 3sat. The version on hand was realized in 1995 and it is again Sir Peter Ustinov who shows his talents as gifted narrator and connoisseur of opera and accompanies the audience through the opera. “The Abduction from the Seraglio” is a famous spectacle, enigmatic and exotic at the same time – and because of that it is not only perfect for the fantastic stage sets of the Marionette Theatre but for Ustinov’s winking presenta-tion as well.

The playback for Mozart’s fascinating “Turk Play” is supplied by a top-class Mozart ensemble: the sopranos Maria Stader and Rita Streich, two of the best Mozart interpreters of the post-war period, “lend”their voices to the two female characters of the opera, Konstanze and Blonde. The tenor Ernst Haefliger sings the part of Belmonte. Ferenc Fricsay, who is especially known as Mozart conductor, takes over the direction. THE SALZBURG MARIONETTE THEATREMOZART - THE MARRIAGE OF FIGARO

For some people, Mozart’s masterpiece ‘Le nozze di Figaro’ is the most perfect work of art that man has ever created. In any case, his first collaboration with the libretti Lorenzo da Ponte, first performed on May 1st 1786 in Vienna, is one of the finest and most popular comic operas in history.

The version on this DVD presents the story, which is based on the popular, not to say notorious, play ‘Le marriage de Figaro’ by the Comte Beamarchais, in an unusual way: in 1995 this version was realized by the Salzburg Marionette Theatre in collaboration with ZDF and 3sat. After ‘The Magic Flute’ and ‘The Abduction from the Seraglio’ it is the third release in a series, which will consist of five DVD’s altogether, and it is again Sir Peter Ustinov who shows his talents as gifted narrator and connoisseur of opera and accompanies the audience through the opera.

The playback is supplied by a top-class artist ensemble: Eberhard Wächter sings the Comte d’Almaviva, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf takes the part of his wife. Anna Moffo ‘lends’ her voice to Susanna and the title role is sung by Giuseppe Taddei. The ensemble is accompanied by the Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus London, conducted by Carlo Maria Giulini.

THE SALZBURG MARIONETTE THEATREMOZART - DON GIOVANNI

Some consider Don Giovanni to be Mozart’s masterpiece; its certainly amongst them and has remained popular since its first performance in 1787. It is an opera that uniquely blends the comic and the serious and a great part of its popularity is due to the enduring appeal of the myth of Don Giovanni, the libterine and the blashpemer, the famous womaniser. In music and literature there are many testimonies to the appeal of Don Juan - and it is always the Don’s scandalous behaviour that particularly intrigues audiences.

The version on this DVD was conceived by the Salzburg Marionette Theatre in collaboration with ZDF and 3sat in 1995. It is the fourth release in a series which will consist of five DVD’s altogether and it is again Sir Peter Ustinov who shows his talent as gifted narrator and connoisseur of opera and accompanies the audience through the opera. The playback is supplied by a top-class artist ensemble; Cesare Siepi sings Don Giovanni, Birgit Nilsson lends her voice to Donna Anna, Leonthyne Price is Donna Elvira. Fernando Corena performs Leporello Cesar Valletti is Don Ottavio and Eugenia Ratti sings Zerlina. The ensemble is accompa-nied by the Wiener Philharmonia Orchestra and Chorus London, conducted by Cario Maria Giulini.

Presented by Sir Peter Ustinov.

THE SALZBURG MARIONETTE THEATREMOZART - COSI FAN TUTTE

Subtitled ‘The School for Lovers’, Mozart’s final collaboration with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, is considered by many to be his most refined and haunting exploration into the contradictions of the heart. Two young officers think they are putting their sweethearts to a test, but everyone received an unexpected education in life and love. Of course, it all ends happily... or does it? Disguises and surprises make for one of opera’s most sophisticated comedies. Featuring some of Mozart’s best-loved music, ‘Cosi Fan Tutte” uses the duplicity of men to test the fidelity of women, and in doing so reveals the humanity of both.

The version on this DVD was realized by the Salzburg Marionette Theatre in collaboration with ZDF and 3sat in 1995. It is the final release in a series of five DVD’s and it is again Sir Peter Ustinov who shows his talents as a gifted narrator and connoisseur of opera and accompanies the audience through the opera. The playback is supplied by a top-class artist ensemble: Pilar Lorengar sings Fiordiligi, Teresa Berganza lends her voice to Dorabella, Jane Berbie is Despina, Ryland Davies performs Ferrando, Tom Krause is Guglielmo and Gabriel Bacquier sings Don Alfonso. The ensemble is accompanied by London Philharmonic Orchestra under the guidance of Sir Georg Solti.

GEORGE BIZET’S CARMEN

Love, jealousy and death – Georges Bizet’s most popular work “Carmen” includes all accessories for a suc-cessful opera. Nevertheless, on the occasion of the Paris premiere in 1875 it was only granted a moderate success. On the one hand, the audience was disturbed by the cool realism and the tragic end, but on the other side it was fascinated by the immorality of the story which is based on Prosper Merimee’s novella of the same name. Due to the disappointing reactions, Bizet sank into deep depression and only three months after the first night was held, he died of a serious illness at the age of 36.

Consequently, he did not have the chance to enjoy the triumphal march of the “Female Elemental Force” Carmen which began shortly afterwards. Today his last work is counted among the most popular works in the history of opera and melodies like the famous “Habanera” sung by Carmen or Escamillo’s Torero Song are well known opera classics.

The DVD presents an open-air staging of the Opera Festival St. Margarethen recorded in 1998 in the col-ourful stage set of the Roman quarry which on this occasion was turned into a Spanish Arena.

HH0108

GIUSEPPE VERDI’S AIDA

After the successful release of “Nabucco” the Verdi commemoration year 2001 sees now another famous opera by the great Italian composer released on DVD. “Aida” was initially a commissioned work for the Egyptian viceroy Ismael Pascha that was meant for the festivities on the occasion of the Sues Canal’s inauguration. The first night was to be held at the newly built opera house of Cairo but due to time-related delays and, above all, the adversities of the Franco-Prussian War, it had to be postponed to December 24, 1871. Giuseppe Verdi himself did not attend this event but enjoyed only in February 1872 the triumph of the European premiere at La Scala where he took 32 curtains.

The impressive scenery of the Roman quarry in St. Margarethen provides the perfect backdrop for the colourful open-air staging from 1997 that is documented on this DVD. “Aida” was the second monumen-tal production of the Opera Festival St. Margarethen which since then has become one of Europe’s most important open-air festivals. Today, the festival is visited by almost 100,000 spectators per year.

HH0109

GIUSEPPE VERDI’S NABUCCO

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Giuseppe Verdi’s death and the commemoration year that I slinked with it, this DVD presents “Nabucco”, his first great freedom opera. Already its premiere in 1842 was a triumphant success for the composer due to the fact that the opera was exactly the Italians kind of thing: they recognized themselves in the enslaved Hebrews who were oppressed by the Babylonians and celebrated Verdi as a symbol of national liberation.

Especially the famous choir of aspiration “Va Pensiro” (that was even sung by the mourning people of Milan on Verdi’s funeral) has lost nothing of its popularity until today.

The open-air staging of “Nabucco” that is documented here, is the most expensive and lavish production of the third-largest European Open-air Festival to date. It was a great popular success and received excellent reviews: “The miracle of St. Margarethen” (Taglich Alles, Wien), “Nabucco goes beyond all previous stand-ards. Unique” (Munchner Abendzeitung).

TCHAIKOVSKY’S SWAN LAKE

The four-act ballet Swan Lake, based on a German fairy tale and with music by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, was first produced in Moscow in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre with a choreography by Julius Reisinger and was a total failure. After Tchaikovsky’s death in 1893, a memorial to the composer presented the second act, successfully re-choreographed by Lev Ivanov. In 1985 a completely new version of the ballet, choreographed by Ivanov and Marius Petipa was staged at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg and this time the ballet received the appreciation that it had rightfully deserved. The new choreography fulfilled the expectations of the Russian public as it added an element of “pressure” to the composition.

This DVD presents a “classical” staging of the ballet from 1968 which is based on the Ivanov/Petipa chore-ography. This Russian screen version of Swan Lake is a colourful and magnificent version of one of the ballet classics of all time, performed by the world-famous Kirov ensemble.

HH0131

GIACOMO PUCCINI’S TOSCA

Tosca is a tragic tale of love, intrigue and betrayal set in the Napoleonic Rome of 1800, a highly successful collaboration of composer Puccini and Illica and Giacosa. It was first produced in Rome in January 1900. The liberetto is an adaptation of Sardou’s famous tragedy, the main facts are said to have a historical basis.

There were fierce political tensions in Italy at the time and rumours spread that a bomb might be thrown at the premiere. Queen Margherita of Italy was present in a glittering if understandably nervous audience which demanded encores of ‘Vissi d’arte’ and ‘E lucevan le stele’ and gave the performance a polite if not outstandingly warm reception. The opera was a success at the box office, but the critics generally turned thumbs down on it, finding its sadism and scenes of attempted rape and physical and mental torture repul-sive. Nevertheless – the general reaction was highly enthusiastic and has remained so until today.

In the performance documented on this DVD, Bulgarian soprano Stefka Evstatieva is Tosca, the tempestu-ous opera singer whose stormy romance with artist Cavaradossi leads to violence, deceit and death. Joining Stefka Evstatieva as Tosca are Canadian baritone Cornelius Opthof as the evil Baron Scarpia and Russian tenor Vyacheslav Polozov as Cavaradossi.

MOZART’S THE MAGIC FLUTE

There is hardly another opera that is ambiguous as Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’. A Magic tale or a mystery play, an allegory on good and evil or a parable of true love – Mozart’s last opera allows many ways of inter-pretation, a fact which even after more than 200 years contributes to the topic’s relevance.

Regardless of the different interpretations one point is indisputable: ‘The Magic Flute’ is a wonderful fairy tale which should be watched with the eyes of a child: “Call back your childhood if you want to understand ‘The Magic Flute’, as the second husband of Mozart’s widow, Georg Nikolaus Nissen, remarked aptly.

The open-air staging of the Opera Festival St. Margarethen from 1999 follows this suggestion. Director Robert Herzi stages the opera as a fairy tale about love in its countless forms and varieties and offers the audience in the splendid scenery of the Roman quarry a unique and magic experience.

THE SECRET KGB SERIES:UFO ABDUCTION FILES

When researchers began looking into just how much the Soviet government knew about UFOs and extrater-restrial visitation, they were not surprised to learn that the Russians took the subject very seriously. What they didn’t expect was evidence of ancient alien visitation, paranormal properties associated with related artifacts and most shocking of all, of a mass abduction in 1985.

Among the piles of materials obtained from former Soviet spies, some extremely puzzling and disturbing documents and film footage surfaced confirming rumours, which had been circulating for decades. In the late 1950’s and 60’s the Russians became very interested in a number of unusual and newly discovered archaeological sites in Egypt. By interpreting ancient symbols, one of those sites was believed to contain the remains of a life form not from Earth. Startling top-secret film footage, never before seen outside the Kremlin confirms the Soviet mission to recover and analyse remains.

THE ELVIS PRESLEY STORY

Born to a poor Mississippi family in the heart of the Depression, Elvis had moved to Memphis by his teens, where he absorbed the vibrant melting pot of Southern popular music in the form of blues, country, bluegrass and gospel. After graduating from high school, he became a truck driver, rarely if ever singing in public. Some 1953 and 1954 demos, recorded at the emerging Sun Label in Memphis primarily for Elvis’ own pleasure, helped stir interest on the part of Sun owner Sam Phillips.

Elvis Presley may be the single most important figure in American 20th century popular music. Not neces-sarily the best, and certainly not the most consistent. But no one could argue with the fact that he was the musician most responsible for popularising rock n roll on an international level.

The story of Elvis Presley traces his early years with fascinating detail, film clips, rare early footage and a wealth of photographs are all here on this DVD.

THE DISCOVERY OF MARILYN MONROE

Marilyn Monroe embodied Hollywood glamour with an unparalleled glow and energy that infatuated the world. Although she was a captivating beauty with voluptuous curves and a generous pout, Marilyn was more than a 50’s sex goddess. Her apparent vulnerability and innocence, in combination with a naïve sensu-ality, has endeared her to global consciousness.

Born Norma Jeane Mortenson on June 1, 1926 in LA, California, and with the identity of her father unde-termined, she was later baptised Norma Jeane Baker after her mother, who had been a film cutter at RKO studios. Psychological problems prevented her mother from keeping the job and she was committed to a mental institution. On June 19, 1942 she wed her 21 year old neighbour Jimmy Dougherty, whom she had been dating for six months. After two years, Jimmy had left to join the Merchant Marines, and Norma Jeane began modelling for popular magazine covers.

By 1946, Norma Jeane had divorced Jimmy and on August 26, 1946 signed her first studio contract with 20th Century Fox. Soon after, Norma dyed her hair blonde and changed her name to Marilyn Monroe (bor-rowing her grandmothers last name). The rest as the say, is history….

In July 1940 his mother died of cancer. Her death was a tremendous emotional burden on Dean. His father sent him back to Indiana to live with his sister and brother-in-law. As a high school student, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle with friends and playing guard on the high school basketball team. After graduating in 1949, he left for Los Angeles, entered Santa Monica City College. Soon Dean quit school, living precariously as a parking lot attendant and chasing auditions wherever they were available. In 1951 he left Hollywood for New York. There in 1953 he landed a spot in the Actors Studio run by Lee Strasberg.

Intrigued with fast automobiles, Dean had bought a $6,900 Porsche Spyder. On September 30 he and his mechanic Rolf Wuetherich, were involved in a head-on collision at Paso Robles, CA. The Porsche was crumpled; Rolf suffered a smashed jaw and leg fracture. James Dean, dead at the age of 24, was buried in Fairmount, Indiana on October 8, 1955. Rob Bredl examines this killer of the outback to find the truth behind the hype. It successfully hunts kanga-roos as well as running down sheep and cattle. For this reason in the State of Queensland a fence 3000 miles long has been erected to try and keep it out. Most famous for taking and reportedly eating baby Azaria Chamberlain in the late 70’s as portrayed in the Meryl Streep Movie “A Cry In The Dark”. The Dingo has recently started to attack and kill humans again posing clashing cries of destruction and conservation. The water dragon is uniquely adapted to inhabit both land and water. It shares it’s domain with one of natures most colourful reptiles, the tokai gecko.

THE AMERICAN SPACE ODYSSEY:NASA ANTHOLOGY OF SPACE EXPLORATION

4 DVD BOx SET

VOLUME 1: Starts in 1960 and is the story of the Mercury programme that paved the way for Gemini, Apollo, the Space Shuttles and Skylab missions that will perhaps one day spawn inter-planetary travel for all. In hot pursuit of the Russians who had already put a man into space, NASA launched America’s first man into space, Alan Shepard in Freedom 7 and John Glenn, Friendship 7. The race to the moon was on.

VOLUME 2: The Eagle has landed and America wins the race to put the first man on the moon, watched over by one billion people around the world! However, space travel is not without its problems. The Gemini 8 mission is aborted and a hasty return to earth followed. The Skylab mission shows what the future may hold but not without its own setbacks. It was however the Apollo 13 mission that tempered the glorification of space travel. The real story, that surpasses the gripping tension of the Hollywood blockbuster version, of how human spirit and ingenuity saved the crew and the mission from ending in tragedy.

VOLUME 3: As the 60s ended the Apollo mission programme completes its detailed exploration of the moon, magnificently captured on film. Back on earth it was the Soviet-American space agreement that led to the World’s two ‘super-powers’ collaborating to expedite the exploration of outer space. The beginning of this new exciting era saw the first Apollo-Soyuz mission in 1972. ‘On the Shoulders of Giants’ is a fitting tribute to the Apollo mission programme.

VOLUME 4: is the concluding programme in this series. It reveals the way forward for the future colonisa-tion of outer space in the new millenium with the successful launch of the Space Shuttle programme. The first re-usable fixed-wind spacecraft to go into orbit and the first spacecraft to make its maiden voyage with astronauts onboard! This detailed study of the Space Shuttle programme covers not only its development and first launch but demonstrates the programmes potential in opening new space frontiers.

VIETNAM1965 - 1969

Direct American involvement in support of the South began in 1955 with the arrival of the first advisors. The first combat troops arrived in 1965 and so began the Vietnam War, the longest and most unpopular war, to date that the American’s have ever fought.

Vietnam, 1965 to 1969 is the remarkable record of the incumbent American Adminstration’s presentation of events to support their cause. A presentation that bore so little resemblance to what most American servicemen endured during their tour of duty, it became inevitable that a nation began questioning the policies and actions of a government they had always trusted and films such as ‘The Deerhunter’ would be perceived as the reality of the Vietnam war and it’s effects on the nation.

Almost 60 000 Americans were killed in combat action but what the war did to Vietnam and to the Viet-namese people was even more drastic. By the time Saigon fell to the invading North Vietnamese forces on April 29, 1975, close to 2 million Vietnamese had died. Countless others perished or disappeared later in Cambodia during the carnage that perpetuated by the Khmer Rouge. PRODUCED FOR DVD BY KIM LYON & GARY PEET

EXCAVATING THE BIBLE

Over the past century what was once taken as hard fact regarding people, places and events in the Bible are now being disputed. Today the Bible is being challenged as an accurate reflection of history, the events written on her pages being seen more as a collection of legends, written long after the time traditionally attributed to Biblical events.

Biblical archeologists have come to the Holy Land with the hope of finding clues to unravel preplexing questions about events in the Bible which conceals a potential storehouse of archeological finds, whose discovery could change the way we look at the Bible.

Myth or reality, fact or fiction? Through the excavations at these sites in the Holy Land, archeologists hope to shed light on this disputed issue resolving conflicts between the Bible scholars and historical scientists.

McCoy Tyner’s Warsaw appearance is a rare solo performance that allows you to see why the former side man to Ike & Tina Turner has been compared to that of a painter by jazz critic Garry Gibbins. “McCoy paints with the opulence of Africa, the orient and the Middle East, which is why his lustiness is manifested in string dynamics and coloration rather than melody…Tyner can inspire and invigorate”. REGGAE SHOWDOWN SERIESDENNIS BROWN LIVE AT REGGAE CANFEST

One of Jamaica’s most beloved and prolific artists, the late Dennis Brown has left behind a slew of classic songs, a rich musical legacy born of a career than spanned over 30 years.

This DVD presents Brown’s last show on film before his untimely death n 1999 and shows “The Crown Prince of Reggae” at his best, performing one hour of his legendary hits, such as: “Love and Hate”, “Stop Yu Fighting” and many more.Until today, Dennis Brown, whom Bob Marley ecstatically called “the best reggae singer in the world”, remains the only art-ist in Jamaica to have over eighty number one hit songs.

This concert recorded at Reggae Canfest also features performances by Brown’s long-term collaborators Lloyd Parks and We The People Band, Lady Shaw, Admiral Tibbet, Frankie Paul and Conrad Crystal. Lady Shaw counts as the first female Dancehall cat to win a Grammy. She is regarded by many as the reigning queen of the Dancehall in Jamaica and enjoys arguably the most sustained career as a female artist in the industry.

Lloyd Parks and We Are The People Band are world renowned as one of the most versatile and accomplished reggae bands and are celebrating 28 years in the music industry.

HH0139

REGGAE SHOWDOWN SERIESSIZZLA & TURBULANCE

Perhaps the most captivating and enigmatic performer to emerge from Jamaica in the last twenty years is Sizzla. But although he is a prolific recording artist, he remains a mysterious figure, having little or no contact with the media. Not wanting to be seen to endorse the industry, he is wary of any involvement with press and promotion – and has granted only a few interviews to date. His rare live appearances are always sold out. With this DVD you get the chance to see one of his most memorable performances to date.

Combined with an electrifying performance by featured artist Turbulance, the ‘High-Priest’ keeps the fires burning with all his crowd-pleasing hits. He has an ability to fuse passionate lyrical styling with deceptively simple rhythms that take in a range of genres from staccato dancehall and gentle roots reggae to surpris-ingly commercial R&B and soul arrangements. Sizzla is all about truth through music. A principle figure in the 90’s roots and culture revolution, he has inspired dispossessed Jamaicans and newcomers to reggae music alike. One dreadlock Rasta is ensuring that the roots and culture legacy lives on.

HH0140

REGGAE SHOWDOWN SERIESSHABBA AT SHOWDOWN

During his heyday, Shabba Ranks was arguably the most popular dancehall toaster in the world. He was a massive crossover success in the U.S., thanks to an openly commercial hybrid of reggae and hip-hop, and also to prominent duet partners like Maxi Priest, Johnny Gill and KRS-One. All of this brought him several hit singles and albums on the R&B charts in the early 90’s, and made him the first dancehall artist to win a Grammy.

Ranks’ distinctive, booming growl of a voice earned him many imitators, and his sex-obsessed lyrics – while drawing criticism for their unrelenting ‘slackness’ – made him one of dancehall’s hottest sex symbols. This DVD shows him at the height of his career: in a concert recording from 1990 he performs hit after hit in his typical energetic and colourful style, accompanied by the silky voice of duet partner Krystal. Before his staggering performance, the crowd is heated up by a host of top artists such as Junior Demus, Papa Sam, Ninja Man, Professor Nuts, Admiral Tibet and many more…

This event would become known as ‘STING – The Greatest One Night Reggae Show On Earth’, a launching pad for many of Jamaica’s popular entertainers. In its history STING has had out on stage over 500 local artistes, some of whom have become extremely successful, not only on the local scene, but internationally as well.

Some of the artistes are: Buju Banton, Beenie Man, Lady Shaw, Junior Reid, Mr Vegas, Zebra to name a few. This major reggae event has not been limited to the shores of Jamaica. The show has toured Japan, the USA and several Caribbean Islands including: Trinidad, St Lucia and Antigua. This DVD captures ex-cerpts from 2002’s show featuring superb performances by the giants of the dancehall such as Ninja Man, Beenie Man and Bounty Killer. ‘Bring Back The Love!’ This is it!

JAZZ LEGENDSCHARLIE BYRD TRIO

Charlie Byrd (1925 – 1999) is best remembered for the work he did with Stan Getz and for his work with Herb Eillis and Barney Kessei, as The Great Guitars. The significance of those two associations sometimes obscures the remarkably innovative work he did in the late 1950’s and 1960’s with his trio. Although Lau-rindo Almeida preceded him in the use of the concert guitar in a jazz setting,

Byrd’s style and technique seemed a perfect fit for jazz. He brought to the concert guitar both a high degree of sophistication due to his classical training and a kind of down home quality that came through when he played blues and straight ahead jazz.

It was said he could play a Bach Cantata with the same ease as a Gershwin song, but he delivered each in its own unique way.

JAZZ LEGENDSCHUCK MANGIONE

For four decades, Chucks boundless energy unabashed enthusiasm and pure joy have characterized his love affair with music and the resulting admiration of his audience.

He joined Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, assuming the trumpet chair that had belonged to such great players as Clifford Brown, Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, before going solo and receiving a GRAMMY nomination for Land of Make Believe. His album Feels So Good became a worldwide mega hit thanks to its self-titled single, which features one of the most recognized melodies in the world and he has continued recording and performing music of a standard that has made him an influential contemporary Jazz icon.

THE PETER GREEN STORY

“The guitar used to speak for me, but I can’t let it do that for me anymore, I can’t let it break my heart again”. Peter was quoted in Mojo ten years ago but the quote stands firm today in summing up this incredible man and his story.

After replacing the legendary Eric Clapton in John Mayall’s blues breakers, Peter went on to form Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac, one of the most successful bands to come out of Britain in the 60’s. Peter’s genius on the guitar was matched by the songs he wrote including Black Magic Woman, later a huge debut hit for Santana, and the supernatural and sublime instrumental Albatross, as well as the classic ‘Oh Well’.

The film will trace that early success, explore Peter’s fragile mental and artistic recovery, his return to the record-ing studio and live music scene in the mid 1990’s that saw his most positive creative output for many years, and will portray an artist who has now come to express his feelings, not just through the guitar music he still loves but also his art and photography.

The film contains extensive and rare archive footage of live and studio performances, stills, and original in depth interviews with Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Mike Vernon (legendary producer of the original Fleetwood Mac Blue Horizons Albums), Martin Celmins (Peters official biographer), Carlos Santana, Jeremy Spencer (the original Fleetwood Mac guitarist), Noel Gallagher and many others who have been fortunate to work with or know the man.
