August 2006 R.A.T.E. Project ReviewSpeaker: Michael OardPopular author, speaker and researcher Michael Oard visitedDSA for a special August meeting. He hosted a full viewing ofthe recently-produced movie Thousands... Not Billions, (fromthe Institute for Creation Research) and shared some of his ownviews—pro and con—on the RATE findings. Oard reviewed the first and second technical RATE(Radioisotope Dating and the Age of the Earth) books for theJournal of Creation quarterly. For this talk, he added much toemphasize and amplify the movie’s briefing on RATE. He finds the evidence presented is strong, and that we can nowsolidly challenge the evolution/uniformitarian establishment;their dates are simply wrong. However, Mike differs with some of the RATE researcher’sassumptions regarding the position (and its consequences) ofthe Flood/post-Flood boundary, and discusses what he believesare additional problems posed for the Flood/post-Flood model. Also, the RATE team puts 4 billion years worth of accelerateddecay into Creation and 0.5 billion years into the Flood. Oardmaintains that this creates a tremendous heat and radiation problem for the inhabitants of the Ark, and addressed this. October 2006Genetic Entropy and the Mystery of the GenomeSpeaker: Dr. Vernon BisselDr. Vernon Bissel hosted an illustrated review of new evidencethat the human genome is deteriorating.Dr. John Sanford was a Cornell University Professor for morethan 25 years working in the area of plant breeding and plantgenetics. His book (Genetic Entropy and the Mystery of theGenome) brings to light commonly avoided but well-knownevidence that the human genome is increasingly burdened withmutational loading, and that this burdening process is, in thelarge, a one way street. The steady march of increasing muta-tions in the human population simply makes impossible thenotion that the wondrous order and information in living sys-tems could arise by chance.One of the most interesting figures in the book presents a graphof declining “fitness” (a measure of reproductive potential) sug-gesting that the overall reproductive “fitness” of the human racetoday could be perhaps only 10%–25% of the reproductive fit-ness of the human race 150 generations ago (which creationistswould take to be the approximate time of the flood of Noah).Dr. Sanford also explains how the children’s story, “The Princess and the Pea,” is allegorical to understanding the difficulties (liketrying to hear a whisper in a noisy room or to identify a slight ripple on a storm-tossed sea) of natural selection producing anyimproved species (evolutionist view), instead of merely slowing the decline of species fitness (creationist view). In summation, Vern makes his own observations in comparing the robustness of information in the genome as compared to the non-robust nature of modern information systems.Since Vern is an engineer and not a life sciences person by training, you can expect the presentation to have some technical contentbut be understandable at a lay person level.Vern also reports briefly on some creation-apologetics in mainland China.(98 minutes, $8)

July 2007Noah’s Flood Evidence: the Retreating StageSpeaker: Michael OardPractically no uniformitarian geologists, whether naturalistic ortheistic, believe there is evidence for a global Genesis Flood.This is because of their mind-set or presupposition that onlyslow processes over millions of years laid down the sedimentaryrocks and later deformed and eroded them. In other words, theyare looking at the world with uniformitarian glasses.It is truly remarkable that they cannot see the abundant evidencefor the Flood that stares them in the face, seen on the surface ofthe Earth, which is the domain of the geological subfield ofgeomorphology. Mr. Oard’s talk will cite this evidence, usingthe classification developed by Tas Walker of Australia. In par-ticular, he will focus on the last (Retreating) stage of the Flood,when the water was flowing, sometimes at high speeds, off therising continents. The talk will be well illustrated with slides,mainly from the northwest states.The Retreating Stage of the Flood can be divided into two phas-es: (1) the Sheet Flow Phase, as wide currents began drainingthe floodwaters off the continents, and (2) the ChannelizedFlow Phase, after mountains and plateaus were exposed above the floodwater, forcing the water to channelize around these obsta-cles. Each phase produces certain features on the Earth’s surface. Moreover, the features formed during the Channelized FlowPhase are superimposed upon those developed during the Sheet Flow Phase.In his talk, Oard will first discuss the mechanism for the draining of the floodwater, in the form of crustal uplifts and downdrops.He will next delve into the features formed during the Sheet Flow Phase. These are great sheet erosion on the continents, planationsurfaces, tall erosional remnants, long transported cobbles and boulders, and the formation of the continental shelf and slope.He will then present evidence for the Channelized Flow Phase, which include pediments, water and wind gaps, and submarinecanyons.All these features, readily seen on the surface of the Earth, are nearly impossible to explain by the alternative model of slowprocesses over millions of years. They provide powerful evidence that Noah’s Flood really happened.(2 hours, 45 minutes)

They have allowed usto study the surfaces (as well as sub-surfaces) of many of theplanets, moons, asteroids, and comets that share our local neigh-borhood. They have even given us evidence for the existence ofmore than one hundred other planets orbiting nearby stars.Perhaps the most significant result of all this technology, how-ever, is the growing body of evidence that our solar system is avery special place, and the product of a supernatural creation.The wealth of new data in recent years has been causing seculartheories and models in astronomy to rapidly change. This is atestimony of their failure to make adequate explanations andaccurate predictions, two of the most important cornerstones forscientific theories. The most widely-accepted ideas about theorigin and development of our solar system are currently riddledwith holes, as many secular scientists openly admit. September 2007The Puzzle of Ancient ManSpeaker: Dr. Donald ChittickThis September meeting was hosted by influential speaker Dr.Donald Chittick, who presented an updated version of one ofhis most popular Creation Seminar subjects. The talk traces thehistory of man from creation up to the present. The title comesfrom the fact that naturalism teaches that “man evolved up froman animal”. If that were true, then the further we went back-wards in time, the more primitive ought man to be. But scienceshows us exactly the opposite. Ancient civilizations had a high technology even before theFlood. The Flood wiped it all out, but not the memory that itcould be done. After the Flood, people began to rebuild civiliza-tion again but they did not have to reinvent the pre-Flood tech-nology. Thus early after the Flood a high level of science andtechnology was again in existence. It is astounding what ancientEgypt, the pyramids, and other evidence indicates! Survivingobjects made of very hard rock show that they were carvedusing what we would term modern machining methods. In fact,the pyramids themselves show evidence of having been con-structed using powered machinery. After Babel, people scat-tered widely and constructed items such as Stonehenge in theBritish Isles, Tiahuanaco and Sacsahuaman in South America,and the Mayan pyramids in Central America.(80 minutes, $8)
