Throughout the ancient world, hospitality was the most significant virtue practiced by every culture. In welcoming a guest, people believed that they may unknowingly be welcoming a divinity in disguise, as occurs in the First Reading today. From his tent, Abraham sees three men passing in the distance. He runs to offer hospitality. Unknowingly, they are angels (messengers) sent by God. They bless Abraham and Sarah with the news that Sarah will bear a son. “Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels” (Hebrews 13:2). Hospitality is also at the heart of today’s Gospel as Jesus visits the home of Martha and Mary. Jesus uses this visit to teach something deeper about hospitality. While Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, Martha complains to Jesus because Mary is not doing anything to help her. Instead of agreeing with Martha, Jesus chides her in a kindly way: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things.” He goes on to say that “Mary has chosen the better part.” While not rejecting Martha’s cooking, Jesus wants to remind Martha, and through her us, that service must also be connected to listening. Service that does not embrace listening to Jesus’ word misses the heart of everything. That is why Jesus says that Mary has chosen “the good portion.” Mary has in fact chosen the best part of the meal. Christianity requires service, but the Word of the Lord needs to be heard first. What was your initial reaction to the interchange
between Jesus and Martha in the Gospel reading? How do you understand Jesus’ words to Martha, “Mary
has chosen the good portion”? How would you treat strangers if you considered them a
messenger from God?
