PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The first school holidays of the year and the Easter Break are coming up fast as is the end of daylight saving.

hile I have enjoyed the long evenings

the mornings have been very dull with sunrise now after 7am. The autumn colours are not showing yet but I expect to see them over the next few weeks.

It is great to see some new activity happening in Round Corner with the recent addition of a fish market, takeaway or eat in fish meals all on the one premises called Flippin Fish. A Greek restaurant is coming as well and B Coloured Hairdressing is moving next door to bigger premises. Bel Fiore Italian has applied to Council for an extension of their outdoor seating and The Chamber has supported the application. We truly have a unique shopping and dining experience in Round Corner and surrounds.

The NSW Business Chamber has been in touch a few times with our Chamber to support moves to lessen the penalty rates paid by business owners in the hospitality industry. In South Australia they have reached an agreement where Saturday penalty rates will be abolished, Sunday and public holiday rates lessened in return for higher base rates of pay and guaranteed annual pay rises. I am not sure where I or other members of The Chamber stand on this issue as my business is not hospitality. However it will be easy to find out as there are plenty of restaurants, coffee shops and fast food outlets in the area to ask!

Anzac Day falls on a Saturday this year and there is no allocated Public holiday. I guess most businesses will close anyway and celebrate on the day. We will remember them.

Please visit our website or send us an email at [email protected]. Visit our online EVENTS DIARY for what is happening or register an event.

I have safely returned from my first trip to Europe and I was very impressed.

started off in Paris which was only eight degrees when we came out of the airport and very breezy. We negotiated a bus and a cab to out

motel right near the Eiffel Tower and it was tiny! If you dropped the soap in the shower you were in trouble.

Restaurants were in abundance so we settled on one across the road and had our first taste of French cooking and wine. Divine! I learnt French at school and had brushed up a little on my French before the trip and I found the French people quite interactive. I had been told they were rude, arrogant and intolerant of tourists. They answered my limited French and then spoke English which was really frustrating as I wanted to practise my French. I actually found them refreshingly honest because if you did not acknowledge their ways they certainly let you know. The Eiffel Tower was amazing and we also did a river tour of the Seine.

Next we flew to Nice to see my son who is staying in nearby Cagnes Sur Mer and over the next week explored the Cote d’Azure in his trusty little Renault.

Everywhere we visited had local markets happening and we experienced everything from flowers, seafood, cheese to local art and craft and clothing.

The Sydney Writers’ Festival is coming to Hornsby in May, with two popular authors set to visit the library to discuss their work.

s part of the Festival, which runs yearly and features literary talks and events across Sydney, writers Maxine McKew and Sami Shah will be appearing at Hornsby

Library. Maxine, an award-winning journalist, may be best-known for defeating John Howard to win the seat of Bennelong in the federal election in 2007 but her book Class Act shows a non-political side of her interests. In the book, Maxine seeks to uncover the secret to providing great education in Australia, speaking with prominent thinkers in the field and examining six Australian schools.

The Festival will also include an author talk from Sami Shah, a Pakistani comedian who is sure to bring laughter to library audiences when he discusses his hilarious and moving memoir I, Migrant, which was published last year.

Hills Shire Mayor Clr Andrew Jefferies has praised the Hills Youth Army for becoming an integral part of Council and community life since being established in 2014.

t a civic reception held at the Council chambers, Mayor Jefferies said that Council’s changes to the volunteer system

had seen a rise in youth volunteering, primarily through the Youth Army. “The Youth Army have lent a helping hand at Council and community events and stopped the trend that saw our youth volunteering numbers dropping,” Mayor Jefferies said.

“Council’s Community Development team are working to boost our youth volunteering numbers and thankfully we have some very keen, enthusiastic and energetic young people who are jumping on board. The Youth Army gives our volunteers a real opportunity to upskill and learn life lessons through their experiences. They’re instilled with pride, passion and community spirit through their efforts.”

Hills Shire Deputy Mayor Dr Michelle Byrne was instrumental in the establishment of the Hills Youth Army and said volunteering was an extremely rewarding experience. “As someone who has spent a long time volunteering, I know first hand what it’s like to give your time to community initiatives,” Dr Byrne said. “Over the years I’ve been on various volunteer committees and it’s not uncommon to be one of the youngest people in the room. Council wants to promote youth volunteering to give them an opportunity to be engaged and a part of community life while getting some real life experience.”

Mayor Jefferies thanked the Deputy Mayor and Hills Youth Army founder Sophia Wakeling for driving the growth of the group. “Without Michelle and Sophia, the Hills Youth Army would not have been as successful and I’m sure they will work with Council’s Community

Development team to grow the Youth Army even further in 2015,” Mayor Jefferies said.

Sophia Wakeling said she was grateful that Council had supported the initiative. “We live in such a diverse area and I’ve found that whatever you do in terms of volunteering comes back tenfold.

It’s such a rewarding experience and I’m really excited to be working with Council on this exciting project,” Ms Wakeling said.

The beautiful Hawkesbury River continues to be maintained with the Clean4Shore program.

he program conducts debris removal at foreshore

locations in the Hawkesbury River, with Hornsby Council funding and assisting with project management. Last year, there were 26 clean-up outings on the Hawkesbury River as part of the Clean4Shore program, with 261 volunteers devoting 1079 hours. Across the 42 kilometres of shoreline cleaned, there were 22, 112 items disposed of and 20 tonnes of rubbish removed that would otherwise be polluting one of Hornsby Shire’s most valuable natural resources.

Hornsby Shire Council’s Environmental Scientist Ana Rubio greatly contributed to the program by organising work plans, schedules and securing the budget for Clean4Shore. “I am delighted to hear of the fabulous results that the Clean4Shore program achieved last year, and hope that the great work can be continued over 2015,” Hornsby Shire Mayor Steve Russell said. “The Hawkesbury River is an incredibly important and iconic part of Hornsby Shire’s environment and I am proud to say that Council is helping to protect it for future generations to enjoy. I would like to thank Ana Rubio, Graham Johnston and of course all the volunteers for their ongoing work, and also acknowledge the support of the local oyster industry who helped with logistics.”

Clean4Shore is also funded by Gosford Council and supported by the Greater Sydney Local Land Services and Community Environment Network.

Local community groups such as Scouts and Girl Guides stand to hugely benefit from proposal put forward by the NSW Government.

he NSW Government has agreed to implement a Container Legislation Deposit . The decision will benefit

hundreds of local community groups like the 1st Dural Scouts who regularly clean up the environment by picking up discarded cans and bottles. The environmental clean-ups will now give groups an opportunity to be financially rewarded with refunds on recycled drink containers.

Chairman of the Parents Committee at Dural Scouts, Ashley Pattinson, said the scouts had been heavily involved in environmental clean-ups for years now and the refunds will allow scouts to extra raise money. “Our scouts were out in Dural and surrounding suburbs picking up rubbish for Clean Up Australia Day on March 1st,” Mr Pattinson said. “It’s great to know that from now on our scouts will be able to actively fundraise while cleaning up the environment at the same time.”

Hornsby MP Matt Kean shared the NSW Government’s proposal with the community on Wednesday saying the

decision would encourage recycling, reduce waste and make parks and beaches cleaner.

“All the evidence suggests that a Container Deposit Scheme is an effective way to reducing waste,” Mr Kean said. “One in three pieces of litter are bottles and cans. This scheme can lift recycling rates by 80 per cent and help financially reward environment efforts from community groups in the process.”

It’s estimated that at least 800 reverse vending machines will be installed across NSW – offering communities the opportunity to be rewarded for contributing to positive environmental outcomes in the places where they are most needed.

April 2015 – Dooral Roundup 11

The First World War had a marked effect on farming communities like the Dural and Galston districts. Some 106 men, having family or work related connections to the area, enlisted as volunteers, beginning in late 1914 and over the ensuring four years. Most came from orchards in this district.

any enthusiastic farewells were organised to send them off and they were given small practical gifts to help

them in their new life. A reduced number were welcomed home at functions in local halls and family homes, and these events were recorded in local papers. Sadly 25 local men paid the ultimate price, either killed in action, died of wounds or disease. Others returned, often as invalids, physically or mentally, having survived unspeakable horrors of war. The survivors were expected to return to their pre-war lives and get on with it. Some did get on with it and managed to live on into the 1960’s.

The community has thoughtfully recorded their names on rolls of honour. Glenorie has a cenotaph similar in design to the one at Galston, next to History Cottage. But the Dural memorial is the Dural Memorial Hall, and the names of local men who served are on plaques inside the hall. When the Federal Treasurer, Sir Joseph Cook, opened the Galston War Memorial in 1920, where 60 names are engraved on marble plagues attached to a sandstone obelisk, he said “We are hoping to keep green the memory of those who fought for the unity and indestructibility of the Empire”.

This year the society will present an account of the local men who enlisted in 1915, tracing their fate as recorded in their military service records preserved in the National Archives of Australia and augmented by the hand written Battalion records describing the activities of the unit on a daily basis. In many cases it is possible to follow an individual’s military service from Egypt to Gallipoli and onto France and Belgium. A few men are more difficult to determine in that they gave the military false names on enlistment or the names on the rolls have no obvious connection to the district. One man signed on as Williams but was actually a Mitchell. Others had already left the district and enlisted in other localities even as far away as Brisbane and Melbourne. One didn’t return to Australia, not because he was killed, but as he had married a girl from

Armentieres, France and started a small grocery business. The military were obliged to return all troops to Australia, so this poor soldier, in desperation, resorted to writing to the Prime Minister, successfully pleading his case.

On this, the 100th anniversary of the abortive landings on the Gallipoli peninsular, we will remember them. We also remember the community spirit that had the vision to publically display the names of these men to help us remember them.

Come along to the Dural Historical Society’s meeting at History Cottage on Saturday 11th April, at 2 pm to hear more about Ken and Barbara’s discoveries. All welcome.

Premier Mike Baird was upfront with what needed to be done to deliver the roads, rail schools and hospitals our community needs.

he scare campaign run by Labor was proven to be as ineffective as it was wrong, and was seen through

by the voters of NSW for the dishonest and desperate clutching at straws that it was.

On a local note, I am delighted and humbled to be returned as the Member for Baulkham Hills. It is an honour to be elected by your community to represent them in the NSW Parliament and it is an honour I do not take lightly.

The result in Baulkham Hills tells me that, while the North West Rail Link has secured a resounding endorsement from Baulkham Hills residents, we must continue to work hard to deliver more infrastructure for the Hills, including Rouse Hill Hospital and NorthConnex.

While I am sad to see areas such as Northmead and Winston Hills leaving the electorate, I am pleased to have received a vote of confidence from my new constituents in West Pennant Hills, North Rocks, Castle Hill and Carlingford.

Thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing NSW continue to prosper under the Baird Government over the next four years.

The NSW Business Chamber has called on the New South Wales union movement to follow South Australia’s lead and support the many cafés, restaurants and shops across NSW that are struggling under the burden of excessive penalty rates.

usiness SA and the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees’ Association have reached a landmark

retail enterprise agreement which will see Saturday penalty rates abolished and Sunday and Public Holiday penalties reduced, in return for higher base rates of pay and guaranteed annual pay rises.

Excessive penalty rates are a barrier to retailers opening and employing people on Sundays and public holidays and are forcing business closures right across the country. It is really pleasing to see the Shop Distributive and Allied Employees’ Association agree to a practical solution that benefits their local economy. It is time for the NSW union movement to come to the table and work with the business community for what’s best for the NSW economy – which is getting people into work.”

Remember that when cafes and restaurants can’t afford to open, casual workers not only miss out on penalty rates, they aren’t paid a wage at all.

The Hills Shire Council is on track to record a 16th consecutive operating surplus for 2014-2015.

ith the bulk of councils across Sydney and NSW sliding deeper into the red, at The Hills we’ve been

very careful to ensure we spend our ratepayers’ money wisely. Our cautious and conservative financial approach has led to us to having some of the best finances and community facilities of any local government area across New South Wales. Council’s total asset base now stands at $4 billion with total cash and investments in excess of $280 million.

Despite the fact that The Hills Shire Council was fit for the future and could quite easily stand on its own two feet, I support the reform of the state’s Local Government sector. I agree with Premier Baird and the findings of a recent Galaxy Daily Telegraph poll which supports community beliefs that there are too many Councils in Sydney.

The Hills Shire Council’s ratio of one staff member for every 311 residents was the equal lowest in NSW, compared to an average ratio of one staff member for every 226 residents for a similar sized council.

Given recent events shining a spotlight on seafood brought here from overseas, consumers may be interested to know that they can buy local produce with confidence that Commonwealth fisheries will remain sustainable well into the future.

ur excellent fisheries management has seen, for example, stocks of Orange Roughy and the popular

blue grenadier (or hoki) return to healthy levels and can be commercially fished. Not only will you enjoy healthy and quality seafood, you will be assisting the more than 13,000 people directly employed in our fishing industry.

ANZAC Day 2015 will be an exceptionally special day, marking as it does the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli. I would encourage you all to gather your family and friends and participate in one of the many local services which will be held. These events commemorate the sacrifice and service of our brave men and women who have left our shores in defence of our peace and security.

Finally, as the only remaining MP to have served with former Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser, I was saddened by his passing. Working in the old Parliament House, I shared with him the turbulence of 1975.

Malcolm Fraser abhorred apartheid and all racial inequality, he believed in cultural diversity and in serving his beloved country with fervour and ability.

I am proud to have known and served in the Parliament with him.

A re-elected Baird Government would transform the Hornsby Quarry into 40 hectare parkland oasis.

he NSW Government had secured funding from the

Federal Government for my plan to fill the quarry with spoil from the M1 to M2 link. We have a once in a generation chance as we build NorthConnex to fill in Hornsby Quarry and create the People’s Park in its place like Centennial Park.

I put forward this proposal in October last year and I am delighted the Baird Government’s plan for this site has now secured federal funding for the $22 million project.

Imagine features like a man-made lake, picnic areas, bike tracks, sports fields and tranquil water features and gardens that will be enjoyed for generations to come. The quarry is currently an unsightly wasteland that has been a burden on local communities for more than a decade. We will work with Federal Government and Hornsby Council, to remediate the land and fix this mess.

The work is expected to take two years.

Communities will be able to fight crime at a grass roots level with a $10 million Community Safety Fund that aims to stamp out anti-social behaviour.

nder our government NSW’s crime statistics are now the best on record with all major crime

categories having fallen or remained stable, but there is more we can do, especially at a grass roots level. The NSW Community Safety Fund will provide up to $250,000 grants to non-government or not-for-profit organisations, community groups, chambers of commerce and businesses to build safer and more harmonious communities. The fund will include monies drawn from the NSW Proceeds of Crime Fund. I encourage all communities to bring us ideas on how they think they can benefit from this fund. It could be anything from monitored CCTV, campaigns to reduce stealing from motor vehicles, funding for improvements such as fencing or lighting and initiatives to reduce anti-social behaviour in public places.

The Community Safety Fund will support projects that:> address local crime hot spots;> address anti-social behaviour in communities;> promote safe and inclusive use of public space; and> promote collaborative approaches to community safety and crime reduction, prevention and detection initiatives.

This is empowering communities to make a real difference at a grass-roots level. This initiative empowers community groups to think about what local factors are behind crime in their area, and then to create local solutions.

Throughout the month of April there will be a variety of commemorations and events held throughout the Mitchell electorate to commemorate 100 years of ANZAC.

rom the formation of ANZAC at Gallipoli to present day, in all theatres of war and peace, this milestone

year is significant in our nation’s history. Locally, the Centenary of ANZAC Hills Community

Committee has established a program of events for the Centenary of ANZAC commemorations. Please visit http://www.hillsanzaccentenary.com.au/ for information on local events being held during April 2015. This ANZAC Day we remember more than a century of service and sacrifice by the men and women who have served and continue to serve our nation – in defence of our values and freedoms.

THIRD REPEAL DAY The Coalition Government had now repealed more than 10,300 legislative instruments and introduced legislation to repeal over 2,700 Acts of Parliament.

I want to hear from my local businesses, community organisations, families on individuals on how the Government can help cut even further red tape in our electorate to build a strong and prosperous local economy.

A supported playgroup for children with and without disabilities, and their families.

n Wednesday 25th March at 9:30am we will be holding an introductory morning to our newest initiative

Seedlings Playgroup. Seedlings Playgroup is an inclusive, weekly supported

playgroup welcoming families, with children with or without special needs, who are yet to commence school. It will be hosted in Warrah’s beautiful natural environment and will have the support of a Steiner trained playgroup leader.

Incorporating access to Warrah Farm, children are safe and free to play and explore their world in a warm, calm environment. Parents, carers and siblings come together and can enjoy friendship, support each other in their parenting, share in conversation, craft, farm activities and morning tea.

Seedlings Playgroup encourages sensory development and a gentle unfolding and awakening of the child through play, music, movement and gardening. We bake bread (and eat it too!) Morning tea is shared and each session encourages outdoor and indoor activities with the scope for social and individual time.

Seedlings Playgroup is based on Rudolf Steiner’s philosophy for Early Childhood Education. Focusing on protecting childhood through wholesome play- based experiences, children are given time and space to develop at their own pace, to explore and of course play.

We invite you to join us on a journey through the year with stories, songs, puppet shows, seasonal craft activities and festivals - our playgroup formally commences on Monday 27th April at 9:30am.

To register your interest in attending the introductory playgroup session next Wednesday 25th March or to find out more please contact Christine Chiarella on 9651 2411 or email [email protected]

Hills Grammar’s Junior School V Team (volunteer team) led their classmates in ideas and activities to celebrate Harmony Day. V Team leader and Head of Science, Michele Lautre, explains “The students loved sharing their thoughts about Harmony

NoRthholm emBRAces stem DAy!Recently Year Eight students at Northholm Grammar School participated in a STEM Day. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a new government initiative being trialled by the School. The students had a great morning, solving Mathematical problems in a workshop facilitated by a team from Inquisitive Minds. Through careful design of the problems, students with a range of Mathematical abilities were able to find a problem that offered the appropriate level of challenge. As the competition focus was aided with ‘chocolate challenges’, there was a tremendous energy and

enthusiasm for the activities. In the afternoon students participated in an activity designed and run by the Design and Technology and Science Departments.

This activity required students to build a bridge with a high efficiency number to span a 40cm valley using only paddle pop sticks, plastic straws, sticky tape and balsa wood strips.

Malaysian officials have announced plans to launch a new airline after reaching a $1.5 billion agreement with aircraft manufacturer Bombardier.

he carrier will be based out Kota Kinabalu in east Malaysia and Johor Bahru in the south. The agreement

means Flymojo is expected to become the first customer and operator of the CS100 aircraft in the region.

Aziz Kaprawi, Malaysian deputy minister of transport, said: “Revealing this new airline in Malaysia is a thrilling way to start LIMA. “With Flymojo’s primary hub at Johor’s Senai International Airport and secondary hub in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, the airline’s state-of-the-art fleet of CS100 aircraft will be of crucial importance in enhancing connectivity between the Peninsula and Sabah and Sarawak, as well as other parts of the region.

“Furthermore, as the only airline with its headquarters in the Southern Corridor, Flymojo will make a key regional aviation and logistics hub out of Senai, thus complementing the government’s plans to develop Iskandar Malaysia and the Southern Corridor. “Further consolidating Kota Kinabalu’s position as a gateway into Malaysia, Flymojo will also increase tourism to Sabah and Sarawak.”

Reports suggest the new airline will start operating in October this year.

The Macedon Ranges is on Melbourne’s door step, less than an hour from the city.

he vineyards are located along either side of the Great Dividing Ranges seeking the optimum

interaction of soil, topography, aspect and climate. With cool summers, the ripening period is in the cool of autumn-delayed, slow and long- the latest vintage to occur anywhere in Australia.

The wines reflect the climate and topography. There is diversity, but the predominant characters are a natural lively acidity and steely backbone; fine, intense but delicate fruit characters and soft tannins in the red wines. The balance of alcohol, acidity and fruit provide complexity and longevity, making a superb match for a wide range of food.

First established in the 1850s, the region is home to over 30 vineyards, the largest and my favourite is Hanging Rock. Established in 1983 by John and Ann Ellis, with the aim of making Australia’s finest sparkling wine in the style of French marques like Bollinger and Krug, on offer are a range of wines of consistently quality reflecting the blending skills of wine maker John Ellis.

In addition to the acclaimed Macedon NV Brut and Macedon NV Brut L.D, the Jim Jim Pinot Noir is a must try for lovers of this style.

If you shun the sun, suffer from milk allergies, or adhere to a strict vegan diet, you may be at risk for vitamin D deficiency.

nown as the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D is

produced by the body in response to skin being exposed to sunlight. It is also occurs naturally in a few foods, including some fish, fish liver oils, and egg yolks, and in fortified dairy and grain products.

Vitamin D is essential for strong bones, because it helps the body use calcium from the diet. Now research is revealing the importance of vitamin D in protecting against a host of health problems. Symptoms of bone pain and muscle weakness can mean you have a vitamin D deficiency. However, for many people, the symptoms are subtle. Low blood levels of the vitamin have been associated with the following:> Increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease> Cognitive impairment in older adults> Severe asthma in children> Cancer

Research suggests that vitamin D could play a role in the prevention and treatment of a number of different conditions, including type1 and type 2 diabetes, hypertension, glucose intolerance, and multiple sclerosis.

The Merchant of Venice is a story Shakespeare couldn’t resist.

n unfathomable sadness in a man’s heart, the mysterious terrors of the ocean, hate crime and

religious intolerance, our willingness to gamble with our live, things that still hurt and hinder us to this day in our struggle to know the difference between mercy and justice. Directed by Richard Cottrell this production by Shakespeare is passionate, theatrical and unmissable!

Some of Shakespeare’s most extraordinary characters people this play. Portia, the brilliant young woman who dresses as a man to save Merchant’s life and bears witness to an untold passion between Antonio and her husband, Bassanio. At the centre of them all in the court of Venice stands a Jewish moneylender, Shylock, demanding a pound of flesh from a man who is willing to have his heart torn out of his body as a gesture of love to his friend.

The Merchant of Venice promises to be another incredible night in the theatre.

A Power of Attorney is as important for life planning as making a Will.

any people prepare a Will but do not give the same consideration to appointing an attorney until it is

too late. Appointing an attorney gives your attorney the legal authority to look after your financial affairs on your behalf.

Power of Attorney only deals with property and financial matters, and your attorney can sign legally binding documents on your behalf. You may, for instance, be travelling overseas and want to give your attorney access to your bank accounts to pay your bills or manage your finances. Alternatively, it can be useful to have a Power of Attorney if you become unwell and are no longer able to manage your financial affairs.

Making a Power of Attorney does not mean that you will lose control over your financial affairs. It simply gives your attorney formal authority to manage your financial affairs according to your instructions. Your Power of Attorney can be cancelled (revoked) at any time provided you have the capacity to do so.

It does not give someone the right to make decisions about your health, medical treatment or welfare.

The engine and driveline are responsible for providing forward and reverse movement to the driving wheels.

he driveline consists of the engine, transmission, differential, and driveshafts combining to provide

energy to the wheels. It drives the front wheels on a front wheel drive vehicle, rear wheels on a rear wheel drive vehicle and both sets of wheels on a four wheel drive vehicle.

Items that may indicate a fault with the engine and driveline system are:> Oil leaks on driveway> Excessive smoke from exhaust> Noisy and rough engine performance> Poor acceleration> Transmission not selecting gears> Whining noises when driving> Oil pressure gauge lower than normal or oil light on

If regular engine and driveline maintenance is not adhered to poor performance. Poor fuel economy, and the potential for serious and costly engine and driveline repairs can be expected.

The environment will also suffer due to increased harmful exhaust emissions.

When picking the right handrail for the stairs in your home, it’s important to consider both the safety and practically uses, but also the design to ensure it compliments your homes overall style.

irst thing you should know is there are two types of handrail systems – post to post handrails, and over the

post handrails. Over the post handrails suit straight-line staircases. Posts to post handrails are best used for staircases that will twist and turn.

Metal handrails are generally made from pipes in either round or square shape. I would suggest metal handrails if you are looking for something durable and low maintenance.

Wrought iron handrails are fantastic if you are after a more ornate look. However, if cost is an issue then these handrails may be out of reach as they are considered a specialty material and cost a little more.

Wooden handrails are very popular as they are an easily adapted material to suit both traditional and contemporary styled homes. The cost of these handrails will depend on the type of wood you choose, so this product can suit about any budget.

Glass handrails are very new to the industry. If you are after modern living design then this would be your go to material, however keep in mind this product will be high maintenance.

With so many options of handrails out there, it can be rather difficult to make a decision.

Establish how much you would like to spend, what materials suit your overall home design, and which system you will need.

F

The nights are getting cooler and the days shorter, so now is the time to look at winterising your pool.

tart by giving your pool a good clean and get the water tested and balanced by bringing a sample to Dural

Poolsmart. Don’t forget to clean the salt cell or sensors and injection point on your chlorinator as this will mean that the chlorinator will be able to keep going all winter.

Once balanced and looking great you need to put on your solar or leaf cover if you have one. These are good for keeping leaves and other debris out of the pool over winter.

Turn the running time down to a minimum of 6 hours a day as this is how the system is designed to filter and chlorinate your pool water.

For the first few weeks check the chlorine level to ensure that the levels are not getting too low or too high (you are looking for about 1-2 ppm of free chlorine) and adjust the output or run times of your chlorinator to suit. Low chlorine can leave the pool to go green and high levels are not good for your cover and can cause staining.

Once into winter proper check the water every week and get a test done every month especially if there has been a lot of rain. Lots of fresh water can cause things to go pear shaped really quickly especially with a cover on the pool.

These simple steps will make starting your pool up in Spring a much simpler and enjoyable task.

Come in to see us at Dural Poolsmart to help get your pool ready for winter or like us on Facebook to get regular hints and tips on keeping your pool clean and clear all year.

L J Hooker Liveability Real Estate Specialists With Peter Colusso, Principal LJ Hooker Dural

People seeking homes with reduced running costs, increased comfort and connection to a vibrant community experience are driving a new trend in real estate.

o meet and manage this demand by consumers, LJ Hooker has spent almost three years developing an

understanding of this new market. The results are the Liveability Property Marketing

The checklist covers such things as orientation, cross-ventilation, insulation, window systems shading and energy and water efficiency devices. Many people have invested in these features and now, finally, they can be identified at point of sale or rent by a trained specialist agent.

Steve Ford, Craig Wang and Michale Egiziano of LJ Hooker Dural / Cherrybrook are real estate specialist agents now able to identify and responsibly market 17 Liveability Property Marketing Features™ in a property.

“This is vital information for any buyer, seller or renter wanting to reduce their everyday household running costs,” Steve explained. “The bottom line is it’s all about empowering owners, investors and renters so they can use their homes more effectively and live comfortably”.

Please feel free to contact one of our Liveability Specialists should you require further information.

Glenhaven Rotary has that reputation, with women playing a big part in their success, the club has a membership balance of about 50/50 men and women.

lub members with their BBQ unit volunteer to support at the local public school fete donating substantial earnings to school

projects and during March turned out with their trusty BBQ unit to cook at Living Choices Glenhaven Annual Sports Day.

Support goes beyond the local community, in March the club was recognised by the people of the Philippines for their humanitarian support before and since devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan.

Glenhaven Rotarian Francis Bernabe with wife Ofelia joined medical and building teams to give vaccinations and assist in medical examinations and treatments, it’s 4 visits to Philippines now over 4 years. Their valuable work also includes collecting and donating used computers to be used in a government program to educate the unemployed.

This year 90 computers have been donated.
