FOREWORD

Dear Grandmaster Trajtenberg, ITF Board Members and National Delegates

I am very excited to present to you our bid to host the ITF World Championships in 2017. We want to bring you to our beautiful country and capital city of Dublin where you will be met with Céad míle fáilte (100,000 welcomes). You will experience first hand the famous Irish hospitality, sense of humour and fun. You’ll also enjoy the comfort and convenience of a venue and hotel that is like nothing else in Europe. If you can picture the international mixing pot of an Olympic village and the convenience of a state of the art competition venue just outside the hotel reception then you’re very close to picturing what we have ready for you.

We have a very capable and dedicated organising committee ready to make sure your visit to Ireland is smooth and that the only stresses you experience are from the competition floor. Starting with the short transit from Airport to hotel, the possibility of having all competitors staying under one roof, a 30 second walk to the competition floor, warm up areas available all week next to the main floor, room for up to 12 tatamis, 2 elevated rings… we’ve planned everything with our guests in mind.

Please enjoy this document, showing you some of what Dublin and Ireland have to offer. We very much look forward to meeting you in Ireland in October 2017.

Taekwon Adrian Byrne VI Dan Organising Committee Member

Knowledge CapitalExperienced professionals, world-class researchers, multi-national organisations and innovative start-ups have all made Dublin their home. Over 1,200 overseas companies have chosen Ireland as their European base and are involved in a wide range of activities in sectors as diverse as e-Business, ICT, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, financial and international services. Half the world’s top fifty banks have operations in the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) in central Dublin. In total, there are almost four hundred and thirty international institutions directly operating from Dublin with a further seven hundred managed entities carrying on business under the IFSC programme. Ireland is a key location for the pharmaceutical and chemical industry in Europe. Nine of the top ten companies in the world have operations in Ireland. There are eighty three overseas healthcare companies and over half of these companies are involved in research and development, with a number of companies having dedicated research and development centres. The top ten independent software companies in the world all have significant operations in Ireland.

Social Media CapitalAs the location for European headquarters of companies such as Google, Facebook, LinkedIn, eBay, Zynga and Twitter, Dublin has become not only the internet capital of Europe but a social media hub for Europe. A report in 2011 showed that 84% of all Irish Internet users used social networks with more than 2 million Irish profiles on Facebook and one in 5 Irish people having a twitter account. It is therefore wholly appropriate that Dublin would play host to the world’s global social media travel writers in 2013.

Did You Know…that Ireland is home to 8 of the top 10 pharmaceutical and 15 of the top 25 medical devices firms?

10 of the world’s top-selling prescription drugs are made in Ireland – Ireland is a giant in medical technology. With €6.9 bn in exports of medical devices, Ireland is the 2nd largest exporter of medical devices in Europe after Germany. Ireland employs more than 24,000 people in 160 medical technology companies, 80 of which are indigenous.

• Ireland is the largest provider of cross-border life insurance in the EU with 16.4bn in premiums in 2009.

• The total US investment into Ireland is greater than into Brazil, Russia, India and China – COMBINED!

• We produce enough beef each year to feed 30 million Europeans. 1 out of every 5 burgers served in McDonalds in Europe is made from Irish beef.

• Half of the world’s fleet of leased aircraft is managed from Ireland.

• Drink up – the Brew House at the Guinness Brewery in St James’ Gate has the capacity to produce over 4-million pints of the ‘black stuff’ every day.

THE ORGANISING COMMITTEE

The River Liffey meanders serenely through Dublin City on its way to the Irish Sea. Many bridges span its expanse not least of which is the famous pedestrian “Ha’penny”

Bridge as pictured on the contents page. In recent years the city has grown, more bridges for pedestrian and vehicle traffic have been added. The most famous of these is the Samuel Beckett Bridge pictured above, designed by Santiago Calatrava. It was inspired from the shape of the harp, a historical and prominent symbol of Ireland. The steel cables mimic

the strings from the instrument. This bridge has breathed new life into one of the world’s oldest architectural genres which in turn enhances this beautiful river and city.

goes back over a thousand years. Step back in time in this city full of

literary landmarks, from the James Joyce Tower to Trinity College,

alma mater of many of Ireland’s greatest writers.

Steeped in history and youthful energy, Dublin is a medieval city

where the charming and cosmopolitan converge in delightful

diversity. Fine museums and art galleries chronicle Dublin’s long and

contemporary entertainment.

Throughout Dublin city and county you will find an abundance of

a heritage trail, visit a zoo, eat in a castle or follow in the footsteps

of Dublin’s many musical greats, there’s something for everyone in

Dublin and a story at every glance.

The Dublin RegionCounty Dublin is ideally situated on the east coast of Ireland and

just a 20 minute journey will bring the visitor from the bustling city

DUBLINANDTHEARTSDublin is a city that truly captures your imagination. Intimate as a

village, sophisticated as a metropolis, friendly as your local pub, the

capital city of Ireland is a centre of infinite interest and activity. Dublin

embodies two very distinctly different features – its rich and varied

history and cultural life which coexists happily with the ever changing,

vibrant beat of contemporary life.

Dublin’s illustrious literary tradition dates back over a thousand years

and in 2010, Dublin was designated a UNESCO City of Literature.

Birthplace of James Joyce and Nobel Prize for Literature winners

William Butler Yeats, George Bernard Shaw and Samuel Beckett, and

home of The Book of Kells, Dublin is a truly inspirational city.

Music and song play a large part in the artistic make-up of Dubliners.

The city provides a showcase for all facets of such talent from which

traditional Irish Folk musicians such as The Dubliners, The Chieftains

and contemporary artists like U2, Chris De Burgh, Sinead O’Connor

and Glen Hansard have found inspiration and international popularity.

Music, whether it be classical, traditional or contemporary is

very accessible in Dublin, often experienced with its natural

accompaniment – dance. Visitors may try their hand at traditional set

dancing or dance the night away at one of the numerous trendy night

clubs that illuminate Dublin’s night sky and carry the beat of the city

well into the morning hours.

Internationally renowned artists are frequent visitors to the city with

an abundance of first class performances as varied as the Bolshoi

Ballet to the staging of rock concerts. Comedy and cabaret also

feature strongly in the entertainment line-up and can be sampled at a

multitude of impressive venues across Dublin.
