DTH In-Home Distribution with SAT>IP

November 2012 – Marie Laure Desseigne

Las Vegas, April 13, 2015 Thomas Wrede

Encontro SET e trinta

What is SAT>IP?

2

is a Communication Protocol for satellite reception devices on IP networks

First presented at SES Industry Days in 2011

Adopted and supported now by over 40 manufacturers worldwide

Since March 2014 available as CENELEC standard EN50585

SAT>IP will make satellite services:

1. available on more devices (tablets, smart phones, …)

2. transportable via IP in-home infrastructures and in professional environments

!

3

Advantage 1: Satellite to reach IP devices

Advantage 2: Sat-distribution via IP

4

or IP-LNB

All free-to-air and encrypted channels are transported via the IP network

For encrypted channels the STB or TV requires a CA subsystem

Watching encrypted content on an IP device requires implementation of a CA-to-DRM system

Architecture

SAT>IP distinguishes between Servers and Clients

Clients request live satellite TV programs from servers

Servers provide live satellite TV to clients

Media Protocols

SAT>IP Servers:

- answer client requests

- remove the DVB-S/S2 physical layer

- encapsulate in IP (unicast or multicast, RTP or HTTP)

- transparently forward TS Packets to clients

SAT>IP clients

SAT>IP clients:

- remotely request TV programs (DVB TS packets) from a specific satellite transponder

- specify the IP protocol in which they would like the program delivered

- display the program to the user

SAT>IP is standardized as CENELEC EN50585

Device certification

Interoperability of products is key for a successful market introduction:

- SES currently handles product certifications

- Provision of reference servers to SAT>IP developers

- Availability of software testing tools for developers

Certified devices may carry the SAT>IP logo:

SAT>IP Alliance

21

At NAB 2015 the SAT>IP Alliance will be launched

An non-profit organization open for all manufacturers, satellite and TV operators

Scope: further develop and promote the SAT>IP communications protocol

Conclusions

22

SAT>IP brings satellite TV to a plethora of IP devices and supports cost-effective

distribution of satellite TV in hotels via (existing) IP infrastructures

Over 40 manufacturers support SAT>IP with already more than 75 products

− Flat screen TVs from Panasonic and soon TP Vision (Philips)

− IP-LNB and IP flat antenna available

− SAT>IP specification optionally supports DVB-C and DVB-T

The SAT>IP Alliance will be announced during NAB 2015 and combine the

engineering and marketing power of world-leading companies to support SAT>IP

Next step: publication of an “Operator Extension” to support transcoding and CA-

to-DRM solutions
