Story and Photos by Pat KrauseThe annual Opera Under

the Stars was held at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa Rose Lawn on April 19th. The lush lawn was filled with opera lovers, and the weather was perfect for an outdoor event. The evening was dedicated to Palm Springs Life Magazine and to the memory of its publisher, Milt Jones, who passed away last year. Karen and Tony Barone honored Milt Jones and Palm Springs Life magazine with a 58” tall painted all aluminum sculpture that they created for this event.

The award was unveiled and given to Frank Jones, Milt’s

son, who is now the publisher and owner of Palm Springs Life Magazine. Frank said he was thrilled to receive this and would find a special place at the Magazine headquarters for it. Nancy Harris presented the award to Frank. The Sculpture was donated by, Artists to Opera Arts, as their 2015 St. Cecilia Patron of Music Award. Opera Arts is a non-profit organization that brings musical performances, operas and operettas to the Coachella Valley Community and our youth. The 2016 award will go to local celebrity Gloria Greer.

The entertainment for the cocktail reception was by D

Company and dinner music was provided by the renown pianist, Gale Enger. There was a delicious sit-down dinner before the Opera program began. Music Director and Pianist Victoria Kirsch spoke to the guests about the opera being performed. She explained each song as the songs were sung in a foreign language that not all would understand.

The performers were Shana Blake Hill and Zachary Gordin. They made each song come alive so translations were not always so necessary. You understood their emotions by their performance of the song.

Story and Photos by Pat KrauseThe 26th Annual Desert

Spirit Gala was held at the Palm Springs Convention Center on April 12th. The American Cancer Society sponsors the event. This is the Premier Gala to fund cancer. The theme for the Gala was the Yellow Brick Road. Guests entered on a Yellow Brick Road carpet to the Reception filled with silent auction items. Some of the people attending wore Wizard of Oz costumes. Will Donato with his beautiful saxophone playing entertained guests. Melissa Neiderman and Stephanie Bassanelli were the Advisory Chairs with Tristan and Teresa Rogers and Bobbie Eakes and David Steen as Honorary Chairs. Sponsors included Harold Matzner, H.N. and Frances C. Berger Foundation and Jan L. Bergman. Bobbie Eakes thrilled the guests with a couple of songs that had the people on the dance floor singing with her.

Guests enjoyed a variety of foods and desserts from some of the best local restaurants in the Valley. Restaurants were Cliffhouse, El Mirasol, Kasier Grille Restaurants, Pacifica, Wally’s

Desert Turtle, Rio Azul, The Old Spaghetti Factory, Smokin Burgers, Dish, Koffi, Over the Rainbow Desserts and Spencers that served 400 lobsters and 400 shrimp dishes. Over 400 guests ate these scrumptious foods served at each vendor’s table. So many other businesses provided the flowers, drinks and appetizers not to mention all the silent auction items.

The celebration of Life presentations went to three young children fighting Cancer, Desirae Cechin, Jacob Reyes and Juliana Rose Finazzo. The Inspirational Award went to Gloria Greer, and the Jackie Lee Houston Spirit Award went to Melissa Neiderman. Cancer survivors spoke to the crowd to help raise money to fight cancer with research and to help those who are in a battle with the disease. Patrick Evans was guest auctioneer and Brian Woznak, and Karen Devine served as emcees. Drew Davis was the Host Restaurateur. Entertainment during dinner and for dancing later was the New Sensations Band. This is one gala that should not be missed.

‘Mr. Selfridge,’ ‘A Most Violent Year’ and More If you love shopping,

shopping, shopping, then the PBS Masterpiece series “Mr Selfridge” will be your cup of tea. The popular British TV series, now in it’s third season on PBS, is based on the Lindy Woodhead biography “Shopping, Seduction and Mr. Selfridge.” Created for television by Emmy Award-winning writer Andrew Davies (“Pride and Prejudice,” “Bleak House”), it tells the story of American entrepreneur Harry

Gordon Selfridge, the colorful and visionary founder of Selfridge’s, London’s lavish department store. Emmy Award-winning actor Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) stars in the title role. Frances O’Connor (“Madam Bovary”) plays his wife, Rose.

Long before there was Harrods, there was Selfridge’s, founded in 1909 by an enterprising American who is credited for coining the phrase, “The customer is always right.” He also created an amazing department store which has served as a model for all department stores, past and present. A master of innovative marketing and merchandise on display, Selfridge placed the perfume counters on the first floor which is still the way department stores do it.today. Reckless, with an almost manic energy, Henry Selfridge created a theater of retail for early 1900’s Londoners, where any topic or trend that was new, exciting, entertaining or sometimes just eccentric was showcased.

Not only is the series historical, shedding a light on how the vision of modern shopping was developed; it is also lovely to look at with its lavish period costumes. Season one begins in 1909, showing how the store was founded and developed. In season two, the time frame is 1914 as the world is heading toward the first World War. At present, season three is being aired on PBS, and the good news is, there will be a season four. Tune in now to PBS to watch the show on TV. To find out about catching up on the first two seasons visit PBS.org.

“A Most Violent Year” from Lionsgate was one of the films that LA Times film critic Betsy Sharkey said deserved a best-picture nomination. Unfortunately, this gritty story of crime and corruption was overlooked in the past year’s Oscar race. If you missed seeing this gritty thriller in the

theater, it is now available on DVD and Blu-ray as of April 7.

Oscar Isaac (“Inside Llewyn Davis”) turns in a fine performance as Abel Morales, head of a lucrative oil delivery service which he took over from his wife’s father. He prides himself on running his business without corruption or mob influence, unlike his father-in-law. Things are going well for the company which he now runs with his wife (Jessica Chastain (“Zero dark Thirty”), but on the eve of a huge business deal, he finds himself snared in a web of danger and deceit. Suddenly, he is beset by rivals who want to take over his company and a D.A. (David Oyelowo. “Selma”) who wants to take him down for political reasons. This is unfortunate since Abel has done everything by the book, unlike his predecessor and many of his rivals.

The time frame is 1981, considered one of the most violent years in New York City history. As the film begins, Morales’s company is thriving despite heavy competition. Suddenly his oil trucks, filled with the product, are being hi-

jacked on the turnpike in broad daylight. Who is responsible? The mob? His rivals?. At this point, he is forced to take matters in his own hands in order to protect his family and his business interests.

“A Most Violent Year” is loaded with bonous material that includes audio commentary with the filmmakers, behind-the-scenes featurettes, including interviews with the acclaimed cast, outtakes and more. The film is rated R for language and some violence.

If you think being a stand up comic is easy, think again. Being funny is actually hard work as detailed in “Misery Loves Comedy,” a film by Kevin Pollak. Over 60 famous funny people are featured in this master class on humor. In the film Jimmy Fallon, Tom Hanks, Amy Schumer, Jim Gaffigan, Judd Apatow, Lisa Kudrow, Larry David, Jon Favreau and others talk about the craft of being funny, proving that misery does indeed love comedy. Their anecdotes and insights reveal why and how a performer seeks

to connect with audiences even when and if no one is laughing.

For a time during my college days, I did stand up off and on, and it is thrilling when people laugh with you, and truly frightening when your audience is silent. Sleek!!! No wonder they call it dying on stage or bombing. But when you and the audience connect; the euphoria is addicting.

When the director was asked what was his favorite experience in directing the film he said, “Surprisingly, the editing. The shoots were amazingly fun and funny as hell, but the sorting of the puzzle pieces, and trying to create a narrative that simply didn’t exist until I created one, was never dull and constantly surprising and enlightening. And, again, hilarious.”

According to Pollak, his film gives viewers the opportunity to “hear, first hand, what it actually takes to bare your soul in front of strangers and beg them to love you for it..”

Select theatrical release begins April 24, 2014. From Tribeca Film, running time: 95 minutes, not yet rated.

MUS I C BY ROBERT KINSLER

and genre-bending modernism. Highlights include “Turtles all the Way Down” with its perfect mix of country and gospel, “Long White Line” featuring a swirling psychedelic finish, and the tender “The Promise” with Simpson’s voice mostly hushed until a soaring finale reveal his baritone at its most ardent.

Eventually, everybody seems to get the blues. Look no further than the latest release from Steve Earle & The Dukes. While best known for his

celebrated string of alt country, root’s rock and Americana releases stretching back to 1986, Earle’s “Terraplane” is an authentic celebration of post-Robert Johnson Delta blues. Whether performing Johnson-styled blues (“Ain’t Nobody’s Daddy Now,” “Gamblin’ Blues”), pensive modern folk blues (“Better Off Alone”) or blues rock (“Go Go Boots Are Back,” “King of the Blues”), Earle’s latest batch of originals are rendered with a richness that draws comparisons with the excellent Ben Harper and Charlie Musselwhite 2013 collaboration

“Get Up!” I last caught Earle in a solo acoustic tour in May 2014 and he was terrific; I can’t wait to see him backed by the Dukes at Stagecoach.

Although she got her start as a backup singer for her ex-husband Neil Young, Pegi Young has earned some well-deserved praise since setting out on her own in 2006. Now touring behind the strength of a very solid album (“Lonely in a Crowded Room), the singer-songwriter and her band the Survivors (keyboardist Spooner Oldham, guitarist Kelvin Holly, bassist Rick Rosas and

drummer Phil Jones) are set to offer up a winning blends of folk, country, blues, R&B and rock in the California desert.

Tim McGraw comes to Stagecoach armed with an amazing legacy that includes 13 full-length studio albums (the latest, 2014’s wonderful “Sundown Heaven Town”). His live shows offer plenty of hits, with the material ranging from high-energy dance tunes to tender ballads.

Other must see artists on my Friday wish list include songstress Kacey Musgraves, Nashville collective The Time Jumpers and Canadian country music singer-songwriter Lindi Ortega.

Saturday, April 25: Although Rock and Roll Hall of Famer ZZ Top isn’t technically the headliner on Saturday night, the band will draw like one. The Texas trio will fuel the party while unleashing “La Grange,” “Cheap Sunglasses,” “Legs,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and other radio staples. You can take it to the bank how well the band will kill it at Stagecoach.

The Cadillac Three is a hard-rocking country-meets-rock trio out of Nashville whose powerful originals includes “Peace Love & Dixie” and “Party Like You.” Expect to here the threesome perform their striking new single “White Lightning” at Stagecoach.

Other must sees slated to play on Saturday include singer-songwriter Nikki Lane (whose 2014 LP “All Or Nothin’ “ was one of the best root’s releases of the year), and Nashville-based singer-songwriter Caitlin Rose.

Sunday, April 26: George Thorogood and the Destroyers have scored a number of memorable recordings. “Bad to the Bone,” “I Drink Alone” and “Move It On Over” will be among the staples the Wilmington, Delaware-born Thorogood and his outfit will unleash on Sunday.

Eric Burdon and the Animals (yes, that’s right) will be among the genuine stars performing on Sunday. Although best known for their number 1 hit single “House of the Rising Sun,” singer Eric Burdon and company will likely thrill Stagecoach-goers with classics, such as “We Gotta Get Out of This Place” and “It’s My Life” too. I love the blues-rock showcase “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood.”

Although not as well know as they were in the late 1970s, the Southern rock-country outfit Outlaws will definitely get the crowd going with their timeless hits “There Goes Another Love Song” and the epic rocker “Green Grass and High Tides.”

PALM DESERT – Even with the glamorous Coachella music festival stealing the attention from the desert for the last two weekends, the Palm Desert High School Aztecs baseball team has kept its focus on winning a seventh-straight Desert Valley League championship.

Over the course of the previous month, the Aztecs (5-1 DVL, 15-7 overall) have been preparing for the final stretch of the season having purposely scheduled games against some of the best programs in Southern California.

After defeating Ca. top-100 Royal High School out of Simi Valley on April 2nd in the Coachella Valley Rotary Tourney Championship, the Aztecs fell in extra innings to Ca. top-20 Alemany High School in the first game of the Boras Classic Tournament on the 7th.

The following day, the Boras tournament continued but the Aztecs fell again, 4-0, this time to powerhouse Chatsworth High School. Palm Desert did finish the tourney off with a bang, however, earning wins against Lake Balboa-based Birmingham

High School and El Cajon-based Granite High School.

Last week, Coach Salazar’s boys started the final portion of the DVL season with a sweep of the lowly Cathedral City High School Lions (0-6 in DVL, 2-18 overall). The Aztecs welcomed the DVL’s second-place Indio High School Rajahs (3-1 DVL,

14-6 overall) to Palm Desert yesterday* for the start of a pivotal two-game, Tuesday-Wednesday series.

Palm Desert will complete its series with the Rajahs at Indio High School today at 6:30. The La Quinta High School Blackhawks do have an identical league record as Indio, and thus,

still have a shot at a league title. Yet, the Rajahs have been the better team this year and will give Palm Desert its toughest, most-even conference match.

If the Rajahs cannot get the split this week, the Aztecs will have all but sealed the astounding seventh-straight DVL championship.

Spring into new hotels, restaurants, and charitable events

By Pam PriceSpring, desert style brings

a brand new wave of hotels, dining and original charity events into focus. Case in point is the new 56room Triada Palm Springs (640 N. Palm Canyon) in the famous Movie Colony district. Classic rooms and suites (Grand Casitas feature a complete kitchen), all inspired by Mediterranean décor, hold a mountain of secrets, as this was once the Spanish Inn, a favorite destination for the stars of the silver screen during Hollywood’s heyday. Vacated for over a decade, it emerged in November, 2014 as a member

of the Autograph Collection of hotels that is part of their Marriott Rewards program. Note that they have valet parking only at this time. Parking is a breeze; however, across the street, at the Colony Palms Hotel,(also 56 rooms) another hotel steeped in Tinsel town lore. It opened in 1936 as The Colonial House and is now a showcase of interior design thanks to the genius of Martyn Lawrence Bullard. His lavish use of exotic fabrics in each guestroom sets the stage for memorable parties and a popular venue for film, magazine and television production packages.

Chow time: The latest Dickey’s Barbecue Pit opened near Palm Springs International Airport with an ambitious menu of Texas style barbecue from pulled pork and spicy cheddar sausage to beef brisket. I recommend you inquire first if they have pork ribs, as the night I stood in line for 20 minutes, they were out of ribs causing disappointment to audibly rumble along a long line of diners. On a happier note, Hidden Harvest, a local charity raising funds to feed those in need raised $4,000 in honoring of Phyllis Eisenberg’s 75th birthday. Forty guests paid $100 each to watch a fascinating

cooking demonstration by Malibu, CA

Chef Cathy Rogers. Guests sampled her specialties such as corn soup with a crisp Parmesan cracker, just one of six recipes featured during the afternoon program.

Story and Photos by Pat Krause The kick-off Sanctuary

Palm Springs Party was held at the private residence of Jeff Stanley and Alian Peracca, who were kind enough to open their home to over 100 guests on April 16th. L D Thompson and David Rothmiller are the founders of this much-needed venture. They are bringing an LGBT family home to young people that are in foster care and have no other place to go. It will provide safety and security to those that can benefit from a family type environment. Many of these young people have horror stories of being kicked out of their homes when they came out to their families or have been

bullied mercilessly. The Sanctuary will be a place

to heal and get an education. There will be counseling along with people who will mentor them in various occupations. Many locals have stepped up to help with this project. L D Thompson spoke about his own family rejection when he came out and even contemplated suicide. One of the boys in the program spoke about how he has lived in four different foster homes, and each one was not a healthy environment for a gay youth. L D said this would be first and read emails from other people across the country that would like to follow this program and needed

advice on how to accomplish what David and L D have done.

Guests wrote checks to help with the expenses, and one gentleman even offered a four-bedroom home for their use.

David and L D also asked for volunteers and mentors, as that will be a big part of the program. These kids need somewhere they feel safe and can start a productive life with education

and mentors. Terri Ketover and Barbara Keller spoke about the project, and Geoff Kors gave some insight into the program where kids can feel like family and where different is normal.
