Story and Photos by Pat KrauseLindi and Gino Biggi held a

Parrot Heads Paradise Party at their home in Palm Desert on Saturday, May 2nd to benefit Loving All Animals Charity. The event was held in the Exotic BG Bird Garden where guests can see the variety of Birds in the garden and see the huge colorful fish in the ponds. Hostess Lindi Biggi greeted guests with a couple of cute birds on her head. When I asked for a photo, she went and got this beautifully colored bird and then showed the bird to her guests. The event was produced by Lindi Biggi’s daughter, Lorie Loftis.

Entertainment was provided by the Gary Seiler and the Coast Riders with a tribute to Jimmy Buffett’s music. The band has performed as an opening act for such big names in music as Willie Nelson, Jan and Dean and many others. The term Parrot Head was

coined by Jimmy Buffett in 1985 after seeing his fans in Hawaiian shirts and Parrot hats at so many of his concerts. There are even Parrot Head clubs in cities like Phoenix, LA and San Diego. The event was open for the public for a small fee, and many guests were Parrot Head Club members.

The mission of Loving All Animals is to bring together local and national animal welfare organizations to work with each other for the benefit of all animals. Their slogan is a home from a shelter to a loving adopted home. Chas Kidder is a foster mother to dogs, and she brought her little three-year-old small mix dog for adoption. The dog’s name was Amelia Earhart. It was a hot afternoon, and guests sat in shaded areas with misters from above busy to keep guests cool. Refreshments were served with cocktails and beer at a no-host bar.

Story and Photos by Pat KrauseTony Awards winning actor

Hal Linden was the special Luminary Guest at the CVRep luncheon held on April 29th. The Luminary Luncheon had grown so big that it had to be held at the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences at Eisenhower Medical Center. This was the last luminary luncheon of the season and having Hal Linden was a great way to end the series. Several hundred people came to hear Hal Linden and moderator Don Martin in a Q&A format.

Hal Lindon is a classical trained musician, singer, award-winning actor and so much more. Hal spoke about how his life has transcended from his music career to his acting career and back again to music. He spoke about how a friend asked him to be a bit a part actor during a break as a musician who led to an acting career. He had a girl friend who was also instrumental in getting him a huge acting role. It seems like this guy from the Bronx has had so many lucky breaks in his varied life. He said he often pondered on what his life would have been like if these people had not been there to

help create his career as we know it today.

Hal is best known for his roll as Barney Miller on TV. He said there were many hardship times before all these lucky breaks of being in the right place at the right time. He has been in so many Off-Broadway and Broadway shows that had led to big and small parts in movies and TV. He has gone back to his musical roots in later years and put out a CD titled, Its Never Too Late, in 2011. He tours with his show, Hal Linden in Concert, that has been called First-Rate. Guests kept wanting to know more about this man’s amazing life.

CVRep is an educational and dramatic theatre organization that presents shows and children’s programs that introduce so much of the art for the Coachella Valley.

They produce a lot of programs that deal with issues that you don’t see in other plays. One play dealt with Bullying for the children, and one chose to show the life of an Asian during World Ward II. The actors are sometimes local or even known actors from around the U.S.

By Janice GoughThe great migrat ion

continues as Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) gain an ever-growing share of the investment

market. The growth in the ETF sector has been virtually unbroken since the first such product was rolled out in 1993.

Lower fees (usual ly calculated in single digit basis points) charged for ETFs have attracted investors to use them as part of their portfolios.

Most people don’t know what an ETF is. An exchange-traded fund (ETF) is an investment fund traded on stock exchanges, much like stocks. An ETF holds assets such as stocks, commodities, or bonds, and trades close to its net asset value over the course of the trading day. Most ETFs track an index, such as a stock index or bond index. ETFs may be attractive as investments because of their low costs, tax efficiency, and stock-like features and can be bought or sold at the end of each trading day for its net asset value

Important things to consider when using ETFs as investment vehicles, besides those cheaper

fees, is that they include different asset classes and cross international boundaries.

The majority of ETFs, are passively managed in comparison to mutual funds. This accounts for the lower fees. Because they track indices, it’s important to ask your advisor to rebalance them every three to six months.

It is not possible to buy partial shares in an ETF as one can in a mutual fund. Excess income, of course, can be invested in mutual funds or held in reserve until enough accrues to purchase a full share.

Some ETFs are married specifically to one platform, making them unavailable on others. The trend is for more ETFs to be available across more platforms. This will allow growth in the sector to continue and even accelerate.

As exchange- t raded products grow in popularity, some believe they will one day

dominate mutual funds, as the market share of open-end mutual funds continues to fall. In fact, mutual funds have lost market share in every year since 1996.

Will ETFs overtake mutual funds within 10 years? Based on the current trend, it doesn’t appear likely. Defined contribution plans (401K etc.) rarely offer ETFs to plan participants. If these plans continue to favor mutual funds, ETFs will have a more difficult time achieving asset dominance. However, some market gurus are recommending investment in indices for retirement money, as they tend to be a safer investment for the long term. So changes could take place in the offerings of qualified retirement plans, especially if plan participants desire these offerings..

A lso , Adv isors a re transitioning away from mutual funds toward ETFs.

The number of ETFs has been rising since their inception. Today, there are a little over 1,660

ETFs, according to ETF.com. According to the Investment Company Institute, mutual funds have almost $16 trillion in assets, which represents a market share of 88.8 per cent. Despite the significant gap, some believe ETPs will dominate mutual funds in the not-too-distant future.

If public demand for EFTs options in retirement plans increase substantially, the 10-year prediction may materialize. In any event, I believe the ultimate question is not whether ETFs will overtake mutual funds, but rather when?

HOA Homefront - Insurance Coverage

By Kelly G. Richardson, Esq. CCALDear Kelly:

Is it required that an HOA purchase earthquake insurance? Does it have to be stated in the CC&R’s? Can the board be held liable if it doesn’t purchase the insurance?

Our board has chosen not to purchase a master policy which I think is foolhardy but differing views believe it is a waste of money. I will be moving to a single family home so I won’t have this concern anymore but I would like to know if there is a requirement.

Thanks for your time. H.W., South Pasadena

Dear H.W.:Adding earthquake damage

to an association’s property damage insurance coverage is a good idea, but expensive. Lawyers routinely recommend such insurance, particularly with condominiums. Where the association is required by the governing documents to repair or rebuild the buildings, such insurance may be the only way the association can fulfill its responsibility in the event of a major earthquake.

Some association CC&Rs require such insurance, and those boards have no choice in the matter. However, insurance acquisition is a basic board responsibility, and is not required to be submitted to the members for decision (absent some unusual provision in the governing documents requiring such a vote).

So long as a board follows the business judgment rule, it should not be liable for breaching its duties to the association

if it decides to forego such insurance. Presumably a board would consider the cost and the impact upon the budget and member assessments.

If a board is considering whether to have such coverage, even though it is a board decision, consider consulting the members on the subject. Let them know the premium cost, and how it would increase assessments. You might find they agree with the board decision on the subject.

Best, Kelly

Mr. Richardson,I have a question regarding

Civil Code Section 5805. Can you tell me if that Section states “per occurrence”? It appears on the surface that it does not yet some case law states otherwise and property managers too. If 5805 does in fact mean per occurrence then why hasn’t the Civil Code corrected the language or wording?

Your thoughts please. T.J., Santa Clarita

Dear T.J.:Civil Code 5805 (formerly

1365.9) protects individual association members from being sued in an injury case solely because they are members, so long as the association has at least $2,000,000 (100 or fewer members) or $3,000,000 (over 100 members) general liability insurance coverage. The statute refers to the overall limit of the policy, and does not specifically indicate whether an association could have a smaller “per occurrence” limit on each individual claim but keep the larger overall aggregate coverage limit.

The statute, enacted in 1994 as Civil Code 1365.9, was intended to make sure associations had significant liability insurance, and responded to the case of Martha Ruoff, who in 1988 suffered a serious injury and sued the Harbor Creek Community Association. The association only had $1,000,000 in insurance, and her lawyers successfully convinced the appellate court in 1992 that Ms. Ruoff should also be able to pursue each of the 152 association members. Therefore, I think the intention of the Legislature was that the “per occurrence” limit would need to be the full $2 or $3 million limit, depending on the association size.

Thanks, Kelly

By Kevin PowellLast week, the stock market

was trading at the same level it was Thanksgiving week last year. That equates to a near zero return over the past five months.

At the start of April, the Dow Jones was actually down for the year. So what does all this mean for the balance of 2015 . . . possibly a lot more of the same? Many economists are saying that the first quarter was similar to last year when bad

weather accounted for slow sales. However, that’s a tough argument to win this time around.

2015 is a year of uncertainty and that’s the one thing the market hates more than bad news. It’s uncertain when the Fed is going to raise interest rates. It’s uncertain how big an impact the strong US dollar is going to have on US corporate profits. When the Fed finally does raise rates, it will only make the dollar stronger putting more pressure on earnings.

Earnings so far this quarter have been mixed. Many companies are hitting their profit estimates but missing on revenues or gross sales. That’s very understandable. Even with all the financial engineering (stock buybacks and debt refinancing at record low interest rates) that’s gone on over the past few years, many corporations are struggling to boost sales figures.

Housing still hasn’t fully recovered and the turnaround we

saw seems to be running out of steam. Rental units are outpacing residential construction at a time when mortgage rates have never been lower. Before the 2008 collapse, housing used to account for nearly 21% of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP). More recently it’s been averaging 16% or so and in the last quarter of 2014 it was 15.2%.

I don’t think there is a huge correction lurking (at least not just yet) because there is a lot of artificial support for the US economy. Zero interest rates and plunging energy prices are a big boost. Foreign investment in the US is surging as many countries now have zero or negative interest rates. So instead of earning nothing or worse on their own country’s bonds, foreign money has been gobbling up US bonds for the meager 2% return they are getting here. For the first time in decades, Japan just surpassed China as the largest holder of US debt

instruments for this very reason. Europe and the Pacific Rim

indexes have grown by double digits so far in 2015. Mid cap stocks are outperforming many large cap names by three to four times. Midstream energy names look especially appealing. Healthcare remains strong. Apple

is still our largest holding. So there are lots of opportunities but definitely proceed with caution.

Thousand Palms, CA –Donors do make a difference. In March Animal Samaritans’ raised money for a new animal rescue transport van at their Men of the Desert charity Fashion Show. Event guests pledged more than 18,000 dollars earmarked for the vehicle; with additional contributions coming from Riverside County Animal Services and AnSams’ volunteers, Animal Samaritans raised more than 27,000 dollars for the vehicle. On Friday, April 17, Animal Samaritans’ rescuers

utilized their new rescue van to transport 18 adoptable, at-risk dogs from the Riverside County Animal Shelter to AnSams’ rescue partners in San Diego. This marked the largest of three rescue missions Animal Samaritans has performed in their new rescue van since purchasing it.

The 18 rescue dogs were an assortment of terriers, hound mixes, Chihuahuas, a shepherd mix, a Labrador retriever, a pit bull, a Chinese sharpei mix, a poodle mix, and a shih-tzu.

While Animal Samaritans has participated in larger one-day rescue efforts involving air travel, with flights to Northern California, Washington State, Idaho, and Canada, April 17th’s animal freedom ride was the largest one-day rescue for Animal Samaritans by car. The new animal rescue vehicle is

serving the very purpose the organization and its supporters envisioned it would: to save animal lives.

Animal Samaritans’ recently hired Desert Wraps in Palm Desert to design artwork for their new rescue vehicle. Now, in addition to rescuing dogs and cats from local public shelters, their rescue van will serve as a

mobile billboard to inform animal lovers everywhere of Animal Samaritans animal rescue efforts, basic programs and services, and how to contact the organization.

Desert Regional & Eisenhower Receive “A” Grade

New Water Restrictions Begin June 1st

2015 Transportation Guide For Riverside County

By KMIR News StaffRIVERSIDE COUNTY - Half

the hospitals in Riverside County were rated above average for patient safety, while the other half were rated as average or

below average in a survey published today by a nonprofit healthcare watchdog.

The Washington, D.C.-based Leapfrog Group’s annual Hospital Safety Score analyzed medical facilities throughout the nation to ascertain which ones ranked best and least in procedures intended to ensure that patients’ well-being is not compromised while under the care of healthcare professionals.

According to the survey, seven of Riverside County’s 14 hospitals scored a B or higher, while the balance earned a grade of C or D. None were marked with an F.

Hospitals earning an A grade were Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Kaiser Permanente Community Hospital in Moreno Valley, Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Riverside and Riverside Community Hospital.

Two hospitals received a B -- JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio and San Gorgonio Memorial Hospital in Banning.

Five facilities fell into the C category -- Hemet Valley Medical Center, Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar, Parkview Community Hospital in Riverside, Rancho Springs Medical Center in Murrieta and Riverside County Regional Medical Center in Moreno Valley.

Two hospitals received a D grade -- Loma Linda University

Medical Center of Murrieta and Menifee Valley Medical Center.

The Leapfrog Group, an employer-backed organization focused on healthcare quality, used various criteria to calculate hospitals’ grades, examining whether physicians and nurses took steps to optimize safety during surgeries, whether patients received adequate post-op care, whether staffing levels were appropriate to prevent threats to patients’ health and whether facilities had clearly defined protocols to protect patients.

Some of the sub-categories rated hospitals on the use of antibiotics to prevent infections and steps to prevent blood clots, as well as the maintenance of surgical wounds, prevention of bed sores and medical staff teamwork to minimize errors. Source KMIR

Ca– At a special meeting and public hearing held Monday, the Mission Springs Water District (MSWD) Board of Directors voted unanimously to restrict water usage for irrigation of turf and ornamental landscaping in response to the State Water Board Resolution 2015-0013.

The State Resolution requires urban water suppliers to implement or amend the stage of its water shortage contingency plan that includes mandatory restrictions upon the number of days that outdoor irrigation ornamental landscapes or turf with drinkable water is allowed.

Customers in Mission

Springs Water District are required to immediately restrict outdoor irrigation with drinkable water to three days per week—Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Beginning the June 1 through September 30, 2015, customers are required to restrict watering to Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The additional day for irrigating is intended to address demand during extreme summer weather.

Add i t i ona l l y, MSWD Resolution 2015-06 restricts watering times to between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m., the resolution implements civil penalties of $100, $200 and possible discontinuance of service for non-compliance.

The action taken by the MSWD Board is not to be confused with the Governor’s most-recent Executive order, B-29-15, which will require urban water providers to reduce overall water use within their respective jurisdictional boundaries by varying percentages. MSWD is listed in the State Water Board Draft Regulatory Framework to reduce per-capita water usage by 32%. The final rules for the most-recent order will be decided at the State Water Board meeting in early May 2015.

By Angela MonroePALM SPRINGS --We’ve

been seeing some dramatic weather for the beginning of may, and Sunday a dust devil ripped though Palm Springs.

It was caught on video. The dust devil formed at an

open-air market in downtown Palm Springs at 2pm Sunday.

It wreaked havoc on the Palm Springs Vintage Market, tearing through vendor’s booths.

“I really didn’t expect it to tear up the way it did, but it just kept picking up and I was like wow, you know, this is serious,” said Palm Springs resident, Greg Prather.

Prather and Mark Biggs had just arrived at the Vintage Market when they captured on camera the “dust-nado” sending metal canopies and glass flying through the air.

“There was a little hint of panic you know and when people started hearing glass, you can see people in the background where my camera didn’t get, see them running around trying to scramble to make sure they weren’t going to get hit with anything,” said Prather.

Luckily, the fire department tells us they’re not aware of anybody being hurt, but debris was flying high into the air.

“Merchandise was all over the parking area here in the market, and we were helping to secure the tents that had not blown away, so there were a few moments where it was pretty crazy around here,” said Biggs.

Evidence of the dust devil still remains the next day, there are still panes of glass that are broken here at the Vintage Market most likely from framed artwork.

“You know I feel bad for them because they lost a lot of stuff, and some people had damage to their cars, so it’s tough.”

This was actually the last Vintage Market of the season; it won’t reopen until October.

George, who lives in Oklahoma part of the year, knows the destruction of tornados, but says this dust devil was still quite a force of nature.

“Tornado on a sunny day it’s a little different, but they’re not usually as powerful as tornados but this one packed a good punch,” said Prather. Source KMIR

By Kitty AlvaradoMECCA, Ca. - The Asian

citrus psyllid has already devastated the citrus industry in Florida and Texas and experts in

California worry we are next. They say the nearly invisible bug digs into new growth in citrus trees to feast and lay eggs. The result are trees with blotchy yellow spots

and misshapen fruit that tastes sour.

The name Huanglongbing or yellow dragon was given to the pest because it causes a large

yellow shoot of leaves to spring up from the tree.

They say the bug has infested many trees but not all carry the deadly citrus bacteria. The only tree to be found that was killed by the psyllid was found in Los Angeles County. Experts say California is isn’t that lucky that the bug has only ravaged one tree in our state. That’s why they’re asking everyone who has citrus trees to be vigilant. They say if your trees are infested with the pest you should treat them immediately but if you suspect the disease you should call 1 (800) 491-1899 or your local agricultural commission

Experts say Florida uses their oranges for juice so they are able to mix the sour fruit with the sweet but because California sells oranges as fruit ready to eat, if the crop gets infected there is no saving the little produced before the trees die. The bacteria is not harmful to people just trees.

The more than $2 billion dollar industry could go south quickly if the disease takes hold.

Farmers say their only hope is for a tree to be produced that would be resistant to the invasive bug. Until then they will continue to wage war against the pest and try to enlist citrus lovers to join their cause.

The bacteria is not harmful to people just trees.

A sense of being in alignment occurs this month for everyone, but especially for Aries. As this alignment occurs many ideas, new and revolutionary, appear. Notice them for they will stabilize your actions and expand self-identity, both important in coming challenging times. Careful within groups. Stand tall, brave and courageous. Remember fear is a state wherein more information is needed. Stay informed.

You’ve been called to serve someone or something very special. It can seem to interrupt your usual daily life schedule. Perhaps you’re in retreat, behind the scenes, allowing you to ponder, think and study undistracted. Or you’re tending to a life-changing situation, healing the past, calling forth a new future in the motherland. Whatever is occurring, it’s spiritually based and love underlies your choices.

Soon we will have both Mercury (May/June) & Venus (July/August) retrograde. Your guardians, guides and rulers. Study both and be prepared for something new to occur. Perhaps dispel the illusions of others in how they see you. As you slowly enter into a more reflective state something shifts with your friends and at work. Your communication is

heard by many these days. Your responsibilities as the messenger have increased.

There’s an opportunity offered you within the group(s) you find yourself participating in. Perhaps your knowledge and wisdom will be recognized more, there may be a call to lead and wish or hope fulfilled. New people become part of your circle perhaps through a community interaction. Maintain in these interactions your ethics and ideals as you adapt and compromise and help plan the future.

Work cont inues to be unstabilizing and transforming for the purpose of changing your daily life. The result is original ideas occur developing new ways of relating to personally and professionally. It’s important to be especially concerned with your creative self-identity. You’re more than you think you are, more than most see and recognize. You will be seen as the authority, more and more. There must be a balance between discipline, structure, will, kindness and love. Put them all together.

Things religious and spiritual, questions concerning justice and events occurring far from here fill your mind. You seek answers.

You’re greatly organized, tending to plans and agendas affecting daily life as well as the future. You’re learning about power, in personal and intimate relationships. This continues for years. You learn how to handle power with others. At first we stumble. Then we learn to love more.

You remember past events, people, relationships and how you made choices in terms of future actions. Your life was sometimes around money, acquiring it, saving and spending it. This was a needed developmental stage. Everything we do is a developmental stage. Looking back we think we’ve made mistakes. Each day is new. New opportunities to change those choices, to shift them, to turn them around into something made of gold. You are called to do this. You understand.

In your daily life be willing to listen carefully to other in order to participate in their ideas, plans and agendas. They hold an important seed of information for your future. Listening creates magnetic emotional balance of attraction within your life. You will be seen as one who is wise, intelligent and caring, a new persona for you that helps you cooperate, share, and provide others with praise. These create

Right Relations with all that you encounter.

A new foundation is being built in your life to support new future endeavors. Things important now are tending to physical health in order to improve strength, emotionally and psychically, and making sure you have proper financial advice should you have financial questions. In the meantime, remember to have fun, play a lot, choose the unusual, and seek only the good in all things.

For the married and/or committed, turn to your partner (loved ones, family members) renewing love, intentions and dedications. This leads to a depth of unexpected love and with partners, romance. For those single, call forth Venus before going out and about. To attract others, radiate Goodwill from your heart center (pink substance). People will wonder what’s different about you, what is that light they see? Goodness will follow you in all your days.

What’s occurring at home, with family, parents or your life’s foundation? A new base of operations will soon form and there are changes you will bring about for this to occur. Tend to

money carefully. It could feel like it’s disappearing or melting away. Use kindness in all communications. Don’t disrupt. Either, Take one step of Goodwill at a time. The next ninety-nine always taken by Spirit.

You’re entering many different realities, often unseen ones. Neptune is both dropping and parting the veils, both revealing information and hiding it. The only place of reality is each moment offered in time and space. Continue with your adaptation of patience and fortitude. Keep your spirits up. Remain in the garden. Visualize a warm pool for swimming. See yourself building it…in the motherland.

By Desert Star WeeklyWhile pets deserve your love

every month of the year, National Pet Month, celebrated in May, is a great time to go the extra mile.

Spoiling your furry friends doesn’t have to cost a pretty penny. The discount experts at Dollar General are offering pet care tips for those on a budget.

DIY Grooming: Although it

may be tempting to drop your pet off at a professional groomer to be bathed and brushed, you can save a fortune by doing it yourself. Set aside a time each week or month to bathe, brush and pamper your pet. You can even get the kids involved! Your pet will love the extra attention, and you will love the savings.

Watch What They Eat: It’s

important to find a food that works for your pet’s dietary needs and falls within your budget. For great deals, consider shopping at a discount retailer. For example, Dollar General offers exclusive pet food and treats from Forever Pals and EverPet. Both offer a variety of choices at an affordable price that will make both you and your pet happy. They also carry a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee, so it’s a risk-free trial if you aren’t fully satisfied with the products.

You can also save money on pet food by following label instructions on food packaging and not over-feeding pets. With a proper and balanced diet, you can help keep your pet healthier and happier, and spend less in the process.

Quality Time: The most important bond between pets and owners is quality time and love. Spending at least a small part of your day exercising and playing with your pets means the world to them and is a great stress reliever for you. Plus, it doesn’t cost a cent to shower your pet with affection!

Smart Shopping: Sometimes the cost of owning and caring for a pet can be stressful

when trying to budget for the rest of your family. Instead of shopping for items like treats, flea and tick medication, pet shampoo, leashes and collars at a pet-specific store or your veterinarian’s office, consider shopping at Dollar General or online at dollargeneral.com, which has a variety of merchandise for your pets’ needs

at affordable prices. With more than 11,800 stores nationwide, you’re likely to find a store nearby. You can also visit pinterest.com/mydollargeneral for more helpful tips to celebrate pet month.

T R AV E L BY BEVERLY COHN

Once in a while a trip comes along that is the quintessential luxurious experience and for me the tour of Swiss Deluxe Hotels gets the prize. Combining the ultimate in luxury, with the kindness of strangers, would best describe my most unforgettable adventure.

DAY 1: The kindness portion began at the Zurich airport where the signage for baggage suddenly disappeared. A lovely lady guided me to the steps leading downstairs and were it not for her, I would have been aimlessly wandering in search of my luggage. I was helped onto the train leaving for Lausanne where I had only six minutes to make the connecting train to Montreux. Arriving at the Lausanne train station, I struggled a bit with my luggage and before I knew it, a lovely Swiss gentleman picked it up, took it down a flight of stairs and up another flight to the connecting platform. I asked if he was going to Montreux and he answered that he was not, but just wanted to help me. I wasn’t positive if the train was the correct one and I must have looked a bit confused, as a young woman actually got off the train, reassured me that it was going to Montreux, and picked up my luggage, placing it on the train.

I arrived safely at the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, the first of the family of Swiss Deluxe Hotels, where I met the rest of my group. A sumptuous welcoming dinner awaited us at the Le Petit Palais, directly across

the street from the hotel, which was most appreciated after the almost thirteen hours of traveling.

DAY 2: With a menu of activities from which to choose, I opted for a boat cruise. With spectacular Alpine peaks serving as a backdrop, the boat quietly glided through the pristine waters of Lake Geneva, passing charming homes and historic landmarks, which dotted the shores. One very famous landmark is the Chateau de Chillon Castle made famous in Lord Byron’s poem “The Prisoner of Chillon.”

After a brief break, we headed for a fascinating tour of the Lavaux Vineyard Terraces of the Swiss Riviera wine country on the slopes of Lake Geneva, which earned a coveted UNESCO World Heritage Award. The Lavaux is a region in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland and is known for its award-winning wines. Swiss wineries produce a limited amount of wine and because of that only one percent of their production is exported – the rest is for domestic consumption.

We were hosted by Blaise Duboux, an extremely knowledgeable vintner whose family have been Lavaux winemakers for 500 years, with Mr. Duboux being the 17th generation to carry on the tradition. He explained that the root system currently being used is American and about one-half of the wineries around the world also use this root system. Being organically minded, he does not use herbicides as, “They kill the soul of the grape and have a negative impact on the water supply.” Mr. Duboux is trying to get the other wine growers to not use herbicides as well. During his informative talk, a tempting array of snacks were laid out on the table, including a delicious savory treat called “Surprise Bread.” As far as the next generation, this vintner registered some concern as he has three daughters, none of whom has expressed interest in joining the family business. He

hopes one of them will change her mind.

Visiting a small, neighboring vineyard, we were royally greeted by two gentlemen playing the distinctively long horn or Alpine horn. Some of us tried our hand at playing which is not a simple as it may look, as you need good breath control and strong lungs. As you would expect in wine country, the tour culminated with a delicious wine and cheese tasting. Using a little gadget called a Girolle, the cheese is shaved into the shape of a rosette, which is pleasing to the eye and delicious to eat.

DAY 3: The next day, after our tummies were satisfied with a typical Swiss breakfast consisting of assorted cold meats, hot and cold cereals, and a delicious array of tasty breads, jams and fruits, our next adventure was a scenic train ride from Montreux to Lucerne aboard the Goldenpass Panorama coach, which took us from Lake Geneva towards the Alpine summit and then on down to Lake Lucerne, the birthplace of Switzerland. Here’s a tip: Stay alert as you enjoy the bucolic vistas unfolding, as you might spot a whole range of “animals” on the hillsides. We had a contest to see who spotted the most. As a sidebar, be sure to

purchase a Swiss Pass, which will give you access to the various forms of transportation, including travel by train, bus, or boat.

Speaking of boats, our next mode of transportation was a boat to Weggis, a charming little town located on the shores of Lake Lucerne in the Canton of Lucerne, lying at the foot of the famous Mount Rigi, a massif in Central Switzerland. (Massif: A large mountain mass or compact group of connected mountains forming an independent portion of a range.) Often described as the Riviera of Central Switzerland, it is the home of the beautiful Park Hotel Weggis, another of the 38 independent Swiss Deluxe Hotels located throughout the country, which has earned the five-star quality endorsement. Framed by the beautiful lake and mountains, the hotel sits squarely in this picturesque region.

As with the other hotels, the accommodations were extraordinary, featuring a sunken living room and a splendid, sprawling bathroom fit for a king or queen, as well as a full spa and beauty care services. Perhaps the one and only challenge was to figure out the rather complicated lighting system, which took all of us quite a bit of time to figure out. Press one button and one light went out, press another button and that light came back on, and another one would go out, and at one point all the lights went dark. I had to open the door to let some light in so I could figure out what button to press next. I continued this exercise of pressing different buttons until, at last, I stumbled upon the correct pattern and this delightful room was ready for sleeping. A little advance guidance or diagram would help in sorting out this complex, but wonderful lighting system.

The Park Hotel Weggis is home to Sparks, a French cuisine restaurant which has earned 15 Gault Millau points, a rating system which scores from 1– 20 and is similar to our

Michelin star rating system. In addition, the hotel has the largest wine selection in Switzerland. Hosted by General Manager Peter Kämpfer, who manages two hotels, our perfect, mouth-watering dinner began with a Sommerly salad of raw vegetables with cresson and croutons, followed by pike-perch with braised fennel and barley, and topped off with an unbelievably delicious cheese cake in a glass with apricot.

During the meal, I asked Mr. Kämpfer what was the key ingredient in sustaining a five-star rating and he replied, “Besides the high-end amenities and services offered by the family of the Deluxe Hotels, the staff makes a huge difference in customer service,” adding that, “My hotels have an extremely low employee turnover which means the employees are happy and in turn offer exemplary service.”

Stay tuned for Part 2 covering the rest of this dream trip, which includes a ride on the first cogwheel railway in Europe, a stay in two more Deluxe Hotels - the iconic Palace Luzern and Schweizerhof Hotel Bern - more exquisite culinary delights, and a very special Bern experience involving the recent 2014 FIFA World Cup games.

‘Motown’ Has Come to Town at the Hollywood Pantages

“Motown The Musical” opened on Thursday April 30 at the Hollywood Pantages with a red carpet filled with celebs that included Motown founder Berry Gordy as well as Kevin McCollum, producer of “Motown the Musical,” and the show’s director Charles Randolf Wright along with Motown alumni who later appeared on stage following the electrifying opening-night performance.

The cast is spot on in their portrayals of Motown founder Berry Gordy and the musical performers he fostered. Julius Thomas III and Allison Semmes star in the leading roles of Berry Gordy and Diana Ross and the groundbreaking Motown artists are portrayed by Jesse Nager as Smokey Robinson and Jarran

Muse as Marvin Gaye. Leon Outlaw, Jr. and Reed L. Shannon play the youthful Berry Gordy and the young Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder.

The show is fast paced, filled to the brim with 40 classic hits like “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” In fact, there are so many iconic numbers in the show you have to restrain yourself from joining in. Fortunately, there are times when you are asked to sing along. Other hits in the show include: “Baby I Need Your Lovin’,” Baby Love,” “I Can’t Help Myself “ (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch), “Signed, Sealed, Delivered I’m Yours,” “Reach Out “ (I’ll Be There), “I Hear a Symphony,” “Do You Love Me,” “Stop in the Name of Love,” and countless other timeless hits.

“Motown The Musical” is the true “American Dream” story of Berry Gordy who evolved from a featherweight boxer to a music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross and The Supremes, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and so many others. In the show, we learn how Gordy created his world-famous Motown label, the recording company that created a soundtrack of change in American music. We see how the music evolved in context with the changes in America following the deaths of President Kennedy and Martin Luther King.

While a musical treat for all ages, it is also a visual, fast paced production with an inventive set designed by David Korins. Projection design is

by Daniel Brodie, with showy period costumes created by Esosa. “Motown the Musical,” an enjoyable blast from the past, is lovely to look at, delightful to hear and is based on the book “To Be Loved: The Music, The Magic, The Memories of Motown” by Berry Gordy,

“Motown the Musical: is in town for a limited six-week engagement through Sunday June 7, 2015. Tickets are now on sale and are available for purchase at www.HollywoodPantages.com or www.Ticketmaster.com, by phone at 800-982-2787 and at the Hollywood Pantages Box Office (6233 Hollywood Blvd.). By Desert Star WeeklyBorn in Seattle to parents of

Puerto Rican and Irish ancestry, Savannah commenced her flamenco studies with dancer Ana Montes at the Belltown Ballet and Conditioning Studio at the age of seventeen. Making trips to Spain she continued to develop her technique and her understanding of the complex art form known as Flamenco. She has studied with many of today’s most distinguished dancers such Joaquin Grilo, Belen Maya, and Isabel Bayon, but the majority of her formation as an artist took place in Seattle with Maestra Sara de Luis. Savannah credits master dancer Sara de Luis as her greatest influence and mentor.

An avid proponent of El CanteFlamenco (Flamenco singing), Savannah’s first priority is presenting legitimate Flamenco singing to every audience. She has toured and studied with internationally recognized Flamenco singers

such as Saray Munoz Barrull, Jesus Montoya, and Jose Anillo. Savannah continues to study and grow as an artist touring the Western United States, she has independently produced over 250 presentations and workshops in the past 4 years

The cante f lamenco (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈkante flaˈmeŋko]), meaning “flamenco song”, is one of the three main components of flamenco, along with toque (playing the guitar) and baile(dance). Because the dancer is front and center in a flamenco performance, foreigners often assume the dance is the most important aspect of the art form - but in fact, it is the cante which is the heart and soul of the genre. A cante singer is a cantaor.

Stellar returns from Blur, Otis Taylor, and Steve Kilbey & Martin Kennedy, as well as several outstanding reissues from Queen drummer Roger Taylor provide fuel for discerning listeners.

Artist: BlurTitle: The Magic Whip (Warner Bros./Parlophone)You might like if you enjoy: Blur, Damon Albarn, The Kinks

Tell me more: Blur’s highly-anticipated full-length return “The Magic Whip” is one of the best and most important albums of early 2015. Whether performing an instantly-catchy pop tune like “Lonesome Street” or an unsettling art rocker like “There Are Too Many Of Us,” Blur (singer-guitarist Damon Albarn, lead guitarist Graham Coxon, bassist Alex James, drummer Dave Rowntree) reveal there is

always more to its songs than meets the ear. Elsewhere the music is experimental (“New World Towers,” “Ice Cream Man”), comes draped with shades of world music (Ghost Ship”) or is downright glorious (“Ong Ong,” “Mirrorball”). That incredible feat comes despite that the pioneering Britpop quartet recorded its first proper studio album in well over a decade in a mere five days while the band was on tour in Hong Kong in May 2013.. Information: blur.co.uk.com

Artist: Otis TaylorTitle: Hey Joe Opus Red Meat (Trance Blues Festival)You might like if you enjoy: Otis Taylor, The Doors

Tell me more: Of blues many modern-day proponents, none is as original as Otis Taylor. As evidenced on his outstanding

new studio album “Hey Joe Opus Red Meat,” the Colorado-based bluesman’s so-called “Trance Blues” style provides the perfect sonic backdrop for a concept album that looks at the “decisions that we make and how they effect us.” With two versions of songwriter Billy Roberts’ “Hey Joe” (popularized by Jimi Hendrix) as a supporting the overall theme, the other original songs and instrumentals work just as powerfully. Among the talented contributors enlisted on Taylor’s 14th album are guitarists Warren Haynes (Allman Brothers, Gov’t Mule) and Bill Nershi (String Cheese Incident). Information: TranceBluesFestival.com.

Artist: Steve Kilbey & Martin KennedyTitle: Inside We Are the Same (Inevitable)You might like if you

enjoy: The Church, The Cure, Interpol

Tell me more: Fans of The Cure, Interpol and The Church will want to make sure to get a listen of the latest stellar release from Steve Kilbey & Martin Kennedy. The teaming of Kilbey (long-time lead singer for The Church and writer of “Under the Milky Way”) and electronica-styled composer Kennedy is an artistic fit like few others. On the duo’s fourth studio collaboration the propulsive “Amenia,” the dreamy “This Merciful Blur,” ethereal “Shegaze” and intoxicating “Swansea” are among the wonderful tracks that celebrate their magic. Information: kilbeykennedy.com.

Artist: Roger TaylorTitles: Fun in Space, Strange Frontier (Omnivore Recordings)You might like if you enjoy:

Queen, David BowieTell me more: While classic

rock fans have long recognized Roger Taylor’s vital role in Queen as drummer, backing vocalist and songwriter, it’s easy to forget he has released some fantastic solo albums along the way where his excellent tenor vocals and multi-instrumentalist talents were also displayed. His first two solo LPs (“1981’s “Fun in Space,” 1984’s “Strange Frontier”) have just been issued as deluxe collections with bonus tracks of interest to both hard core and casual fans. On “Strange Frontier” Taylor even reworks a couple of classics and makes them his own (“Bruce Springsteen’s “Racing in the Street” and Bob Dylan’s “Masters of War”). By Angela MonroeTHERMAL -- Two local high

school students are helping carry the message about the dangers of distracted driving.

The students themselves held the summit.

Friday they held a Teen Distracted Driving Prevention Summit at Desert Mirage High School in Thermal.

These high school students are learning about the dangers of distracted driving.

“My father would still be here today.”

Seven years ago, Agustin Arreola’s father was killed in a crash that involved a a distracted driver.

When Agustin began high school, he got involved in SADD, Students Against Destructive Decisions.

“It’s something that I really take to heart, something that I can work with and it’s something that’s going to help other people, it’s going to save lives, and that’s why I got involved, it’s something

I look forward to, and I don’t want to see anyone else lose a loved one because of distracted driving,” said Arreola.

The keynote speaker, Jennifer Zamora-Jamison also lost a loved one in 2007.

“My husband, an Iraq war veteran came home from war, and then was killed by a distracted driver on a US highway. I got involved and have been an advocate and lobbying for legislation across the nation ever since, telling my story ever since, trying to save lives and change minds,” said Zamora-Jamison, the founder of Decide2Drive.org.

The summit was interactive from a seatbelt challenge, to a driving simulation and drunk goggles.

“Traffic collisions is the number one killer of teens in America and a lot of people don’t really understand that, so I brought some interactive tools to talk to the kids about the problems of distracted driving,” said Officer Mike Radford with

California Highway Patrol. We first met these two

seniors last year as they attended a national driving seminar in Washington, D.C.

After they returned, they organized their own summit

on distracted driving.“Most of us think that oh this

is never going to happen to me, I’m just going to look down really quick and send that text, or just update this status really fast while driving, and we all think oh this is

never going to happen to me, like I’m a great texter and driver, but it can happen to anyone,” said Julio Mendez, a senior at Desert Mirage and President of the local SADD chapter. Source KMIR

Demand fo r pub l i c transportation is on the rise. In fact, 10.7 billion trips were taken on public transportation in 2013, the highest in 57 years, according to the latest statistics from the

American Public Transportation Association (APTA.)

Even those who drive should take note of these statistics, which show that communities that invest in public transportation

stand to gain. APTA figures point to a four-fold economic return on investment for every dollar spent on public transportation.

“Where public transportation goes, businesses thrive, property becomes more attractive, and tax revenues increase,” says Michael Melaniphy, President and CEO of APTA.

Substantial and robust public transportation infrastructure is one key innovation that helps to support economic growth in local communities, say experts. With federal funding for public transportation poised to be a critical issue for Congress this year, public transportation advocates are calling for funding legislation that is reliable and sustainable in order to plan, build, maintain and repair these systems.

“As we approach the May 31 deadline for a new surface transportation bill, it is critical that our national leaders come together to create legislation that will ensure years of economic growth and opportunity for

communities across the country,” says Melaniphy.

Here are several ways such investment in public transportation could affect an individual community:

• If you are a homeowner, public transportation in a community could spell financial security during times of economic uncertainty. Residential property values performed 42 percent better on average during the last recession if they were located near public transportation with high-frequency service, according to a report by the National Association of Realtors and APTA.

• Seventy percent of millennials prefer a city or town that features a multimodal transportation option that includes public transportation. By investing in public transportation infrastructure, a community increases the likelihood of

attracting new talent and industry to the area, especially as public transportation systems adopt technologies like smartphone charging stations on vehicles and facilities and fare collection via smartphone.

• Public transportation is a 61 billion dollar a year industry that puts people to work – 1.1 million jobs are created or sustained annually. As such, public transportation advocates say that by supporting measures that improve these systems, local residents will be doing their community a favor.

Information about the impact of public transportation on local communities is available at www.publictransportation.org.

No matter how you get around your community, a robust public transit system stands to impact you and your local economy. (StatePoint)

The petitioner requests the probate of a lost will and the issuance of letters testamentary to the petitioner. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. Before taking certain very impor-tant actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administra-tion authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. Floyd Mayweather Defeats Manny Pacquiao on PointsRound 1: Mayweather

was more active than usual in the early going and has already begun leaning on Pacquiao and landed several scoring blows, including a straight right. Advantage: Floyd.

Round 2: Pacquiao comes back strong, moving Floyd into the corner and landing. Mayweather was unable to connect with his right like in Round 1. Advantage: Manny.

Round 3: Mayweather keeps the action in the center of the ring, attacking the body and landing straight rights up top. Pacquiao swinging wildly and missing. Advantage: Floyd.

Round 4: Pacquiao begins throwing at a high rate but lands only several times. Mayweather doesn’t appear fazed, but Pacquiao appears to be gaining confidence, landing on counterpunches and having the crowd squarely behind him. Advantage: Manny.

Round 5: Mayweather scores on counterpunches with Pacquiao laying back after

a whirlwind Round 4. More activity from Mayweather, who was able to land combinations. Advantage: Floyd.

Round 6: Pacquiao comes back with more volume combinations that connect mainly to the body but glance off Mayweather’s gloves up top. Pacquiao not landing at a high percentage but Mayweather didn’t land at all. Advantage: Manny.

Round 7: Mayweather takes control by keeping the action in center of the ring and setting up Pacquiao with the jab. Pacquiao was able to land with a straight left, but Mayweather connected with greater frequency. Advantage: Floyd.

Round 8: Pacquiao is the more active fighter, but Mayweather more accurate, scoring with straight rights. Mayweather baits Pacquiao to come forward, then lands several counters. Advantage: Floyd.

Round 9: Pacquiao draws

cheers from the partisan crowd with a flurry at the end of the round, but Mayweather lands enough early and more frequently to keep the fight in the center of the ring. Advantage: Floyd.

Round 10: Mayweather gets backed into the corner but never absorbs more than glancing blows and is able to

counter enough. Pacquiao was more active but not nearly as accurate. Advantage: Floyd

Round 11: Mayweather comes out firing and lands at his highest volume of the fight. Pacquiao has a brief flurry, but Mayweather ducks and escapes back to the center of the ring where he is completely comfortable. Advantage: Floyd.

Round 12: Mayweather completes the fight as he did in most of the rounds: owning the center of the ring and not allowing Pacquiao to get inside. Mayweather is too quick and too skilled defensively. Advantage: Floyd.

The judges scored the fight 118-110, 116-112, 116-112 in the American’s favor.

PALM DESERT – Death, taxes and Palm Desert High School’s basebal l team dominating the Desert Valley League are some of the few certainties in life.

For the last six-plus years, the Aztecs longtime head coach, Darol Salazar, has led the boys in red to multiple league titles and section championships – not to mention, produce some very solid baseball players out of the desert.

Starting off the season,

the boys from Cook Street had some difficulty with their non-conference schedule. That was to be expected, though.

Most o f preseason opponents Coach Salazar scheduled are among the best baseball programs in California and even the entire U.S.A. Despite beating some solid schools as well, the Aztecs fell to 2004 national champions Chatsworth Charter, Alemany, Gahr and Corona – all teams ranked in the California top 100.

Even with the slow start, 2015 has been no different for a Palm Desert program that manages to field the DVL’s best team, year in and year out. Captained by some of the best youth baseball players the Desert Sands School District has to offer, Palm Desert is in the driver’s seat to win league for seventh straight time and make a deep playoff run, yet again.

The Aztecs play was not so convincing to start the season. They struggled a bit to find their way through the first month, but since their last loss to Chatsworth, the class of the DVL has won eight straight league games.

Players improve, get more comfortable and relaxed as the season progresses, which, along with a roster full of gifted athletes, and preparation from the difficult

preseason schedule is to blame for the Aztecs current string of wins.

A huge part of Palm Desert’s success last year was due to Andrew Bash’s clutch hitting, finishing the year as the DVL leader with 34 RBIs. Through the first six games of 2015, Bash was hitting near the Mendoza Line at .222 with only three RBIs. Bash – who is already committed to Cal Baptist University next year – has got his batting average up to .313 and leads the team in RBIs with 22.

Now, with one series against the second-place La Quinta Blackhawks standing in their way of a seventh-straight league title, Palm Desert only needs to take one from their league-rival.

It will take a great pitching performance from either Jeremiah Estrada (UCLA) or

Bash, and another clutch hitting performance from the Bash to seal up the 2015 league championship.

With no Kyle Kabeary or Brody Kato, it will be tough for Coach Salazar to reach Dodger Stadium for a second straight year – but it can happen. Bash just needs to continue to hit and pitch the way we did in 2015.

Three games remain for the Aztecs this season, none more important than the next two against the Blackhawks. Next Tuesday, La Quinta travels to Palm Desert High School for a night game starting at 6:30 pm. The series finale will be next Thursday at La Quinta high school for another game under the lights at 6:30 pm.

By Desert Star StaffSpring is here and with it

comes a great day to celebrate moms. If you’re watching your wallet, you may be in need of some great ideas for celebrating Mother’s Day. As it turns out, some of the most thoughtful gift and activity ideas are the most economical and easy to plan.

To help you plan your Mother’s Day celebration, the discount experts at Dollar General are offering some great ideas.

Breakfast in Bed: Pamper mom with breakfast in bed, complete with del icious pancakes, a good book or magazine and hot coffee. She’ll love the opportunity to relax and enjoy her morning without the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Grow Something Together: Sometimes the best gift is an afternoon spent together. Pick out a planter Mom will love, along with seeds, soil and gardening

tools. Spend the afternoon creating something that will grow all season long and remind Mom of her time spent with you.

Bake and Make: Mom might love her kitchen just the way it is, but you can add a splash of color and flair with some inexpensive additions from a discount retailer, such as Dollar General. Update Mom’s kitchen with new accessories, like a kitchen towel or oven mitt, or even a new appliance like a coffee maker or mixer. Complete your kitchen additions with a baking mix for cookies or brownies, and spend time with Mom creating something yummy together.

Tell the Birds: Does your mom love the

outdoors? Pick out a unique birdhouse and bird seed for her, so she can enjoy the natural sounds of the season. You could even turn it into an art and crafts project and make a birdhouse together.

To save even more on Mother’s Day gifts, download digital coupons from DG.com, and look for everyday low prices

at over 11,800 nationwide locations.

This Mother’s Day, show Mom how much you care,

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) - The first Italian woman in space is now the world’s first orbiting barista.

Over the weekend, astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti fired up the first espresso machine in space. She posted a photo of herself on Twitter from the International Space Station on Sunday, sipping from a cup designed for use in zero-gravity.

For the special occasion, she put on her “Star Trek” uniform top.

“Coffee: the finest organic suspension ever devised,” Cristoforetti said via Twitter, quoting from the old TV series, “Star Trek: Voyager. “

“Fresh espresso in the new Zero-G cup! To boldly brew...,” she added.

Cristoforetti, who returns to Earth next week following a half-year mission, almost didn’t get any space espresso. The experimental, Italian-made espresso maker, dubbed ISSpresso using the International Space Station initials, was

supposed to arrive in January, but didn’t get to orbit until April because of a shipment backlog.

How did she like the space brew? She didn’t say on Twitter, but she was all smiles for the cameras and gave a thumbs-up. It had to beat NASA’s instant coffee, drunk by straw from a pouch. The espresso actually is brewed in a clear pouch, behind the closed door of the boxy coffee maker, and that’s how Cristoforetti and NASA crewmate Scott Kelly first sampled it. Cristoforetti later switched to the small, pitcher-like zero-g cup, a new American-made item.

Italy’s 120-year-old coffee maestro Lavazza and the Turin-based engineering firm Argotec, which teamed up on the space espresso project with the Italian Space Agency, were thrilled to see their 260-mile-high results.

“Today the International Space Station feels a little more like home,” Lavazza said via Twitter.

The space espresso maker uses small capsules, or pods, of espresso coffee. Fifteen

coffee capsules flew up with the machine aboard a SpaceX cargo carrier, as well as five capsules for flushing out the system. More

coffee capsules are available for launch if requested by the six-person crew.
