[[1l]] January 2012 www.dontstayin.com words duncan dick photos drew wressler INTERNATIONAL AVALON, LOS ANGELES los angeles has been at the epicentre of the dance music explosion in the us in recent years, with the 1300 capacity avalon lighting the fuse. The club’s cOnTrOl Friday nights, focused on emerging and bass-driven music, have pushed new dJs and acts from skrillex to Major lazer to wolfgang Gartner. “For how big it is,” says skrillex, “they are still on the cutting edge. They know how to break artists that at one point wouldn’t be considered your typical club dJs.” indeed, it was hearing rusko at avalon that exposed skrillex to the power of dubstep. By considered contrast, avaland, on saturdays, presents huge house and techno names such as sasha, cassie, solveig and ingrosso. The venue itself, built in 1927 as a stunning spanish colonial-styled Vaudeville theatre, opens its doors onto Vine st, with the inlaid stars of Hollywood Boulevard just yards away. But inside there is stardust of a different kind. Owner John lyons, who bought his first club in Boston at the age of 18, says owning a Hollywood club is “living the american dream”. One of the world’s leading sound designers, lyons also built the club’s famous custom sound system (with the eaw avalon system, installed across the globe, named after the club). To this end, avalon has become his laboratory – exemplified by the special ‘bass pedal’ he built for a recent Tiësto show that the dJ could step on to increase his thunder – while weekly production changes have seen a replica ny subway train built on stage for danny Tenaglia and Halloween featuring an enchanted forest with trees in the lobby. “straight up one of the best spots to play in america,” reckons Jesse rose, and few would argue.
