Devised by Michael Antidote and his two silent partners, the club speaks volumes about the country’s burgeoning scene. “After three big years in Shanghai, (home of it’s sister venue Club Dada) we decided Beijing needed a solid mid-size venue for hosting cutting edge DJ music”, says Michael, before discovering the perfect location, “in the heart of the historic and hip Gulou neighbourhood, a minute walk from the ancient Drum Tower, the Nanluoguxiang shopping lane and surrounded by a diverse scene of hip hop kids, street artists, skate and fixie hipsters, punk rock diehards, metal kids, and of course, all sorts of clubbers.” Across its two floors, Dada offers a split dance and party room and relaxed bar area, with a café/wine bar upstairs decorated in raw, rustic wood. “The walls are covered in stencil art by Arthur Gallice, who took Chinese icons and made them ‘Dada-esque’, says Michael, of the décor that styles Dada’s concrete walls. “We’re in a city that has a lot of large clubs forced to program very mainstream music and then a lot of smaller bars,” Michael continues, “so we’re trying to bridge that gap: big sound, international DJs, but still intimate.” When Kode 9 played, they even had to siphon power from the neighbouring building due to a freak blizzard. But it’s through adventures like these that since its opening in July 2012 Dada Beijing has revitalised the local DJ ‘crews’, offering them the chance to play with heroes such as Kode 9, Syndicate, Pinch, Kid 606, Doshy, Sub Culture and Objekt. A dozen of these crews then programme nights that range from d’n’b to dark dubstep and techno, disco and rare 80s cheese, in an innovative schedule punctuated by cult film nights and local fashion bazaars.
