1 The DS2000 Data Server

The DS2000 Data server is a state-of-the-art open-architecture data collector designed for today's near-

real-time data collection and data processing needs and utilizes an X86/Linux based platform. The

DS2000 functions as an intelligent data collector and interfaces with network elements, regardless of the

manufacturer, via Magnetic Tape Emulation (MTE), X.25 or LAN. The standard functionality of the

DS2000 includes:

• Data collection

• Secure data storage

• Data distribution.

Figure 1: Typical DS2000 'etwork Implementation

The figure above illustrates a typical DS2000 deployment. The DS2000 can collect and distribute the data

via push or pull methods. The DS2000 MTE capability is bi-directional since the DS2000 can collect

switch generic and switch provisioning files for backup. These backed-up switch files can be sent back to

the switch to restore generic and provisioning data to the switch.

2 Functionalities

The DS2000 provides the user with the following basic functions:

• Seamless Data Collection - By directly replacing the magnetic tape unit, the DS2000 is designed

to ensure data integrity without any gaps or duplication.

• Secure Data Storage - Data is stored to internal disk drive for secure and long term storage

• Data Transfer to Downstream System - DS2000 can push data or be polled by one or more

downstream systems based on user-defined schedules or triggers (time or volume)

• Alarms and Messages - DS2000 generates alarms and messages for system events. Alarms and

messages are stored in system log files

• Notifications - DS2000 generates notifications to inform user of notable system events.

Notifications can be in the form of SNMP traps, audible/visual indicators, e-mail/SMS and dry

contact relays.

• Serial Communication Protocols - DS2000 supports a high number of legacy next generation

X25, IP, and Asynchronous protocols

• User Access - DS200 provide WEB based user interface for operators. It also provides console,

and serial dial-up for administrators

3 Magnetic Tape Emulation Input Interface

The DS2000 provides a number of different functions and features but the primary feature that sets it

apart from other devices in the industry is its bi-directional tape emulation mode for interfacing to

Magnetic Tape Controller. This feature allows DS2000 to provide usage event collection and

backup/restore functionality. It can be used as the primary device for backup/restore of switch

configuration and software including downloading of new switch software releases and patches.

The DS2000 utilizes standard interfaces to collect data from a variety of SCSI and PERTEC interfaces.

The DS2000 is easily configured to adapt to the native interface of any device.

In MTE mode the DS2000 acts as a tape drive to the data network elements Magnetic Tape Controller

(MTC) interface. The DS2000 receives data and control signals from the MTC and returns all of the

required control, status and read/write data signaling to the MTC.

In general, the DS2000 emulates the tape drive mimicking all the control signals and commands. It’s tape

emulation features are listed below:

• Provides an electrically compatible interface and buffer to the (MTC)

• Decodes tape motion commands to exactly emulate the physical tape and tape deck.

• Monitors and regulates control/status lines to and from the MTC in response to tape

motion commands.

5 Data Distribution Interface

The DS2000 provides standard ftp, and sftp, interfaces for transferring data to downstream systems. It

supports industry standards such as IP4, IP6, IPsec. It also supports industry standard data compression.

DS2000 can push data to downstream system automatically based on user definable schedules, volume

thresholds or both.

Additionally, downstream systems can pull data from DS2000.

6 DS2000 Standard Features

The DS2000 offers a set of standard features that enhance its efficiency and adaptability:

• Modular architecture consisting of off-the-shelf plug-in PCI hardware components

• Standard and open hardware and operating system

• Reconfigurable interface allowing multiple interfaces on a single unit. This can be

achieved by software only or software/hardware field upgrades.

• Remote upgrades via LAN or modem to support software patches, modifications, and

enhancements

• DVD read/write removable media for backup and restore of software and data

• Remote management via LAN, dial-up modem or local connection

7 DS2000 Application Software

The DS2000 application programs are developed for industry standard Linux operating system

running on the high-performance single board X86 based computer. DS2000 supports any

application designed for Linux/X86.

Telegence can develop custom software based on user’s specific needs and easily install and

commission these upgrades remotely and quickly.

The DS2000 provides a DVD read/write drive. It can be configured to automatically write data to

DVDs.

8.1.6 User Access Interface

The DS2000 supports access through a local console port (VGA, keyboard and mouse) , Ethernet

and serial dial-in. Modem is optional.

9 Alarms

The DS2000 applications monitor their activity and generate informational and alarm messages

for significant events. These are logged to files for historical purposes. Additionally, it can

generate notifications for alarm conditions. It supports a alarm level based filter for generating

notifications.

Additionally, the power supplies have their own visual and audible indicators notification and

alarm mechanism independent of the above.

9.1 Alarm Severity Levels

DS2000 supports 4 types of messages: Critical alarms, Major alarms, Minor alarms and

informational messages

9.2 'otifications Options

The following alarm management and notification methods are provided and can be enabled in

any combination:

• SNMP, polled alarms and traps - Any alarm generated by the system can be assigned to

generate any of the Telegence SNMP traps

• Notification to individuals or groups via e-mail. An important feature of the DS2000 is its

ability to automatically generate e-mail and SMS messages for each alarm reported by

the system. The administrator can easily assign recipients to the e-mailed and SMS

messaged alarms. Recipients may be individually appointed by alarm severity (e.g.;

administrator with Critical alarms, technician with Minor alarms). Industry standard e-

mail/SMS interface provides network visibility to everyone without the need for

specialized training.

• Hardware alarm board (optional) providing separate dry contacts for Minor, Major and

Critical alarms. The DS2000 can be equipped with alarm relays that directly interface to

the Central Office MAT blocks via dry contacts. Upon receipt of a Critical, Major or

Minor alarm condition within the DS2000 collector, the corresponding relay contact will

be activated at the CO. Alarms may be remotely reset via the DS2000 GUI application.

• Audible alarm output from the audio port providing voice and siren for input to a PA

system or amplified speaker system.
