Today’s shoppers and retailers care about protecting the environment and this has impacted how retailers approach security and store operations. As retailers focus on refining the in-store experience, their loss preven-tion systems and processes must be effective enough to deter shoplifters, but subtle enough to provide a pleasant shopping experience for consumers.

Shrink continues to be a major challenge for retailers and presents them with a dilemma: should they openly merchandise items to maximise customer convenience and sales; or should they locate them behind display cases to protect them from theft, but run the risk of alienating the customer.

Retailers address this problem with elec-tronic article surveillance (EAS) technology that stops shoplifters and also provides a meaningful deterrent. Recently, losses from shoplifting have been exacerbated by rising levels of organised retail crime, which includes professional shoplifting, cargo theft and retail crime rings that are highly effective and well trained.

However, retailers recognise that inven-tory loss is only part of the challenge affecting profitability. Shrink also affects retailers indirectly creating out-of-stocks that detract from the shopper experience. Retailers must also address poor inventory management and inefficient operations.

Source tagging recirculation

Using Tyco’s source tagging retailers can improve supply chain and selling floor efficiencies. When source tagging is imple-mented retailers can reduce the time taken to attach tags in-store and free up staff to focus on servicing shoppers and making sales. The recirculation programme delivers further cost and environmental benefits and enables more accurate on-shelf inventory. Tags are applied at the manufacturing source, before being shipped to stores. Once tags are taken off the item they are reset by Tyco and then shipped back to the manufacturer to be reused. In conjunction with Tyco, our parent company, we’ve just hit the industry milestone of tagging over 2 billion consumer items for retailers globally with our reusable hard tag.

A major Dutch national retail chain, imple mented an Tyco analytics tool to capture and provide in-depth business intelligence. The retailer needed a solution to process and analyse vast quantities of data from POS transactions. At its heart, Key Perfor mance Indicators (KPIs) allow store managers to sort, filter and score data from one centralised application for analysis.
