Holden Commodore SSV

DEAN TAYLOR

Holden Australiahas final sayHolden Australiahas final say

T his month the finalAustralian built HoldenCommodore landed on our

shores — not a run-out model toease itself out of the market, but arip-snorting, fast, eye-catchingbeast that all but pokes GM in theeye.

We understand the economicsof the motoring industry pullingout of smaller markets — but wedon’t really like it.

And when I say we — I mean usAustralasians. This time we sidewith our neighbours.

In a few years time we’ll beover it, but for now we applaudHolden for refusing to go quietly.

So the last version of thedown-under Holden CommodoreVF II is naturally the best yet —and the best of them if you have

the cash in the SSV Redline.I drove this new version from

Rosetown Holden, with theinstructions to ‘make some noise’and ‘enjoy it’.

I did!Holden has rummaged

through the HSV parts store whiletheir back was turned andgrabbed the biggest V8 yet to fitinto a Holden.

It’s the 6.2 litre LS3 — theMexican builtV8 that powersthe likes of theChevroletCamaro —which has someserious bang: 304kW of powerand 570Nm of torque.

It will launch the Commodorefrom rest to open road speed limitin a tad under five seconds.

The exciting news for V8 fansisn’t the extra power — it is thatthis V8 sounds like a V8.

Earlier models were refined tothe point that engine noise wasalmost non-existent.

This time while Holden was

grabbing theengine from HSV, they alsograbbed the switchable bi-modalexhaust system as well.

Simply put, it is a loud buttonfor the engine.

Off — all is quiet and refined. On — brimstone and fire, but

not at the expense of drivability orlaw breaking.

The exhaust is opened up tomake a bit more V8 noise — fromthe low down rumble at idle to a

proper V8 Supercar on thebackstraight roar and cackle as therevs build, and build, and build.

Because you have the windowup so the duel air conditioningsystem can keep you at theoptimum temperature, the systemeven directs a bit of the noise to thecabin so you can enjoy it too.

To accommodate this extrapower, noise and heat, the V8Commodores have sprouted extrabonnet vents and a redesigned

grille and fascia on the sportsmodels.

Now it looks and sounds thepart.

The SSV Redline also gets newblack 19-inch alloy wheels, sportiersuspension and a new brakepackage that adds Brembos to theback to match the front.

The only way to experience theexcellence of this future classic is todrive one — book now atRosetown Holden.

Final farewell to family franchise

File Photo

WILKSBROOKE directors Grant and Shirley Wilks present Life Educationeducator Nicky Wise with the keys to her Mazda3. Mrs Wilks was one ofthe people instrumental in reviving the Life Education Trust around 10years ago and was one of its trustees for many years. The couple are strong supporters of worthy causes in the community, and Life Education Trust is one of those causes that has benefited fromtheir hands-on expertise and tangible sponsorship. In 2012 that support recently resulted in a new sponsored car for thetrust's educator Nicky Wise - the third the couple sponsored in their timewith LET. The couple strongly believes in the value of the Life EducationTrust and vehicle sponsorship is their way of showing educator NickyWise they appreciate her work. The Trust replied that they know the Wilks' business is constantly askedfor sponsorship, so we appreciate their support and that of the other LifeEducation Trust sponsors who have been very loyal.``We also recognise the car provides an important profile for the trustand is essential for Nicky to do her job."She is an energetic, positive educator who gives all children in ourcommunity a positive message.''The Life Education Waipa-King Country Trust delivers the Life EducationProgramme via its mobile classroom throughout the region. It is a charitythat provides children with the knowledge to make informed choicesabout their health, as well as learning to respect others .

W ilksbrooke Motors has thewell-earned distinction ofbeing one of New

Zealand’s most award winningMazda dealerships — a far cry fromits humble beginnings in the cornerof the Te Awamutu Service Station.

The company formed as GrantWilks Suzuki in 1978, a partnershipbetween two Grants — Wilks andRushbrooke — and a smallshareholding held by DougRushbrooke. They soon outgrew itsfirst premises and moved to anearby building, home of sales, service and parts.

Meanwhile in 1980 the Mazdafranchise had been secured and, trading as Wilksbrooke Mazda, wasagain outgrowing its premises bythe mid 80s.

Plans started for a new, combined dealership —Wilksbrooke Motors — and inFebruary 1986 the current site wasopened and over the road theformer Mazda premises becamethe service centre.

Thirty years later, WilksbrookeMotors stands as a modelautomobile franchise operation.

They were named 2010 MazdaRural Dealer of the Year and also

won awards for Excellence inMarket Share and Excellence inCustomer Satisfaction. The awardsrecognise all-round excellence in allfacets of a dealership’s operation.

Wilksbrooke Mazda is a fivetimes Mazda Dealer of the Year —including three in a row from 2006— 2008.

At the 2009 awards, when thethreepeat was announced, MazdaNew Zealand managing directorMazda New Zealand AndrewClearwater, said it was anoutstanding achievement.

“Every year Grant, Shirley andthe team at Wilksbrooke Mazdaraise the bar in all areas of thejudging criteria which includesMazda dealer standards, vehicleand parts sales achievement, service department performanceand customer satisfaction results.

“They put a great emphasis onproviding incredible levels ofcustomer service.”

This was reflected at the 2014awards, when, for the fourth year ina row, Wilksbrooke Mazda wasnamed winners of the New ZealandMazda Customer SatisfactionAward,.

Mazda New Zealand vehicle

operations manager Mark Chaneysays the award is scored on surveyscompleted by customers detailingthe experience they have with theirdealership.

Mr Chaney says in the 13 yearssince the format has been usedWilksbrooke Mazda have won itnine times, and if they didn’t win, were usually runner-up.

Even after selling their businessto Fairview Motors, the Wilkstradition of quality servicecontinued.

This year Wilksbrooke Motorswon the Excellence in Market SharePerformance award for 2014 —and were also runner-up in theExcellence in Customer Satisfactioncategory which they havedominated. And their main rivalsfor Mazda honours over the pastdecade — Hamilton’s FairviewMotors — the new owners.

Mr Wilks says WilksbrookeMotors and Fairview Motors arethe two most successful franchisesin the Mazda New Zealand stable,so clients can be assured the levelof sales, service and customer carethey are accustomed to willcontinue under the new dualdealership.

Chamber honours two-of-the-best

Te Awamutu Chamber of Commerce membersvoted with a resounding ‘yes’ at their AGM toaward life membership to Grant and Shirley Wilks.

This has only been awarded twice before in the 105year history of the Chamber.

“They have been passionate and enthusiasticsupporters of the Te Awamutu business communitysince setting up shop in 1978 and active members of

the Chamber throughout that time,” said CEO SusanTrodden.

“We are delighted to honour them with lifemembership.”

Mr Wilks says the couple are now looking forward to“spending time at the beach and having a rest” — butadded that he is keen to return to the Chambercommunity in a mentoring capacity next year.

Mitsubishi Evo X

DEAN TAYLOR

Limited numbers forFinal Edition of EvoLimited numbers forFinal Edition of Evo

I t has been one of the mostendearing pocket rockets of ageneration, but sadly now the

Evo is coming to an end.It all started in 1992 when

Mitsubishi jammed a turbochargedDOHC two litre engine and AWDsystem from the Galant into aLancer, stripped off a few weightyitems and released it to the masses.

For nine generations the Evoused the same 4G63T engine —and gradually Mitsubishi tweakedmore power, better handling andbetter stopping power into the car.

Generation X came with analuminium version of the engine —and in 2011 rumours it would bethe last model.

The rumours are true.Just 2000 Final Edition Evo X

models are being made — New

Zealand is getting 30 and I drovenumber 15 from InghamMitsubishi.

Someone is going to buy thiscollectable Evo, so don’t panic — Iwent very sedately around theblock just to get a taste and takesome photos.

The last model has been given afew mods since it was firstintroduced in 2007.

It is based on the Final Conceptfrom last year’s Tokyo Auto Salontuning show. That car was heavilymodified to make334kW — the FinalEdition makes230kW and has421Nm of torqueand only comes witha five speed manual trans-mission.

It sports Bilstein dampers,Eibach springs and forged 18-inchBBS rims.

A new grille treatment andbadges differentiate it from theregular Evo X.

the Final Edition from its regular

Evo X stablemate, while someinterior details will also bemodified.

Mitsubishi built the Evo line-uparound its rally efforts, winning the1998 World Rally Championship asa factory team with Finnish aceTommi Makinen.

While factory racing ceased, the

privateer Group N rally programcontinues to this day, withthousands of Evo products in use inforests and tarmac stages aroundthe world.

Mitsubishi has said there are noplans to produce a similarperformance vehicle, however, there is a suggestion the Evolution

nameplate might be applied to ahigh-performance SUV in thefuture.

Purists won’t be fooled though, and the end of the line for theLancer Evo means the prices for allmodels just went up — and theFinal Edition will be sought after foryears to come.
