Director’s NotesDirector’s NotesNever in our wildest dreams could we have imagined a concert such as this last year! As the dancers and I have been busy ‘folding in the cheese’ this semester, we continue to find ways to fight for creativity and positivity in very trying times that are changing day by day. We take turns to inspire each other daily in class in order to celebrate and be thankful for our time together whether at home or Face to Face. Tonight’s concert has been a re-imagining of how to include all of us, no matter our circumstances. Trust me, after losing both Spring Concerts in March and April, we are thrilled to share this work with you, in whatever format we are able!
Our entire Concert has been COVID prepared. We dance in masks, follow safety protocols and socially distance. We were very excited to be able to start partnering and touching in order to continue working real dance and real skills, as we hand-sanitize directly after touching. We decided to do half of our show as pre-edited filming, that students were able to take on as projects. We were even able to take some material from last year pre-COVID and edit with additional material from home this year for a new creation of ‘Willkommen.’ You might notice shorter hair from our lead during the film! Some dancers have filmed at home, and you will not see them in masks, as their clips were sent in and edited together. Other dancers were able to come to the stage to film, and you will see them in masks for safety. Either way, we hope you are able to see and feel the passion these dancers have for their art.
With the zaniness of exactly what 6 feet apart looks and feels like, Ms Follensbee was awarded an OCPS ‘Arts are Happening’ Grant. She was able to have 6-foot diameter hoop skirts constructed that she and the dancers have been experimenting with around campus that we will share tonight. She will also create an additional work with the hoops for Spring.
The most frustrating issue for all of us are the technology glitches that interfere with a dancer’s ability to see and hear music in real time. But, even with the daily frustrations, and 5 different devices for hybrid classes, we have discovered some silver linings! To value process over product, to find new creative solutions, to experiment in new collaborative experiences, and, to remember to have gratitude for health and safety. I have never been more proud of a group of students in my life. They have grit that will endure for the rest of their lives, and they give me hope on a daily basis. Thank you for sharing your dancers with me. They will change the world.
As we try to find the humor in the midst of frustration that each of us are feeling, our ‘Endings’ tonight is a full magnet collaboration that we hope will make you smile! May our ‘Endings’ be the beginning to a brand new year of humanity and kindness.
Enjoy!Kathy FollensbeeDPHS Dance Director
