COURSE SYNOPSIS

This course enables the students to comprehend and identify theoretical design as well as the machine elements that need to be considered in machine design process.

This course also encourages the students to think as a machine designer.

The concept and principle of machine design will be applied in designing machine, focusing on the outcome of innovative student thinking.

Dr. Marwan Affandi 2010

COURSE SYNOPSIS

The course starts with the principle of basic

design concept and design phases.

It concentrates on the dynamics of machine

design, as required in mechatronic program.

The basic element of dynamics will be

reviewed, such as kinematics, machine

mechanism, velocity and acceleration

analysis.

Dr. Marwan Affandi 2010

COURSE SYNOPSIS

The components of machine design will

include gear systems, power screws, belts,

chain drive, cams, shafts, springs and

bearings.

Students will be exposed to the laboratory

work using MATLAB; other software such

as Mdesign may be used.

Students are required to provide a technical

report on engineering product or to develop

a product design.

Dr. Marwan Affandi 2010

LEARNING APPROACH

Lecture : 48 Hours (75%)

Practical : 8 Hours (12.5%)

Tutorials : 8 Hours (12.5%)

Students are required to follow all lectures and tutorials given in the class, conduct all experiments in the lab, and do all quizzes, tests, and assignments.

There should be two-way communications between the lecture and the students.

EVALUATION CONTRIBUTION

Examination: 70%.

Examination contribution:

Final examination: 60%.

Mid test: 10%

Course work: 30%.

Course work contribution:

Practical work: 15%

Assignments/Daily Tests : 15%

Dr. Marwan Affandi 2010

EVALUATION CONTRIBUTION

There will be four (4) assignments given, either

individual or group.

Students must submit their assignments on the

stipulated date. Late submission will result in the

deduction of the mark from 10% to 100%!

If a student cannot submit an assignment due to

any reason on the stipulated date, he or she must

submit it before the date. He or she can submit the

assignment through his or her friend.

Dr. Marwan Affandi 2010

EVALUATION CONTRIBUTION

There will be also four (4) tests given. Students

who do not submit their test papers are considered

to be absent from the class at the date of the test.

Assignments and tests which have been marked

will be returned to the students on the stipulated

date.

If the assignments or the tests are not returned by

the lecturer on the stipulated date, the students

will get 80% of the full marks for the assignments

or the tests.

• Time to refresh your memory about what you have

done so far!

• Remember, this is not the time where you start to

learn your subject before your final exam! It will be

quite late!

• You should study hard from the first week!

Any question?

If you have questions, you had better ask me now.

The longer you keep it in your head, the less you

will understand later.

If you are shy to ask any question in this class, you

can ask me later.

You can also come to see me directly in my room.

But please make an appointment first.

If you like, you can ask me through email or phone

me. But please don’t send me sms.
