FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: DR. ANDREW DINITTO

Dr. Andrew DiNitto began working atFMCC in 1968 and is a Professor ofPolitical Science, Sociology, and Italian.

He has seen many changes in and out of theclassroom during his almost forty years here.

“Back in the 60’s, there was a culturalrevolution taking place,” says DiNitto. “Thepolitical science classes were full. So manystudents were involved with demonstrationsand protesting the war. They were veryinterested in current events and wanted to beinvolved. There was even a time when thecollege closed the campus and final exams werecancelled because of the anti-war protests.Today, the students are less involved, theyhave no cause. I give them extra credit just tochallenge me and speak in class. Back in the60’s, you didn’t have to do that. Studentswanted to take part in their class. I’d like tosee that enthusiasm again someday.”

Dr. DiNitto did see plenty of enthusiasmfrom his players on the soccer field when hewas head coach for the College from 1972-1984. And who wouldn’t be enthused whenyou have a coach whose team is undefeatedduring his entire coaching career.

Dr. DiNitto, a former college All-American andsemi-professional soccer player, turned a teamthat never had a winning season into a nationalpowerhouse. He led the FMCC Raiders toseveral consecutive NJCAA play-offs as well asto Regional and National Championships.

“Back then, community colleges didn’t havedivisions,” says DiNitto. “We playedMiami-Dade, a college of 35,000 students, inthe National Championships in 1979. Weended our season second in the country afterlosing 1-0 in the 6th sudden-death overtimeperiod. Sports Illustrated covered the game.Soccer was a year round affair back then.”

One of Dr. DiNitto’s players, JacquesLaDouceur ’80, one of the finest strikers inthe game who now lives and works inCalifornia and just completed his book "MakeYour Life Count" (available at amazon.com)still keeps in touch with his former coach.

“Through his love for soccer, he has deeplyimpacted thousands of lives,” saysLaDouceur. “I know that anything positive Ido in my life today will have Mr. D.’s fingerprint on it. He was a pioneer for socialchange in his community by bringing many ofus that were born in a different country to hishometown. I never want to do anything inmy life that he would not be proud of.”

“He was a great example of a loving fatherand a loving husband,” continues LaDouceur.“We (the team) had never seen anything likethat in our lives. I always enjoyed watchinghim laugh. Maybe that’s why I strived sohard to win every game – to hear the laughone more time. He is one of the greatestmentors I’ve ever had in my life.”

Through the years, Dr. DiNitto has becomevery involved with professional activitiesincluding his board membership with MountainValley Hospice; chair of the Gloversville Boardof Ethics; advisor to the Cities of Gloversvilleand Johnstown, the Town of Johnstown, andFulton County in their attempts to consolidatetheir public works, public safety, and libraryservices - his proposal helped to save the fourgovernment entities $500,000 annually; andchief author of the Ethics Code for the City ofGloversville just to name a few.

Dr. DiNitto also works part-time as a tutor, mentor, and coordinator for SUNY EmpireState College’s Johnstown Unit. Dr. MichaelAndolina, Mentor and Unit Coordinator at Empire, tells us that Dr. DiNitto is a valued colleague, friend, and mentor at Empire State College.

“I’ve worked with Andy for over 22 years inour undergraduate and graduate programs,” saysAndolina. “I still look up to him for guidance andintellectual challenges. He’s our expert on politicalscience and public policy. We team-teach a coursein our graduate program called Policy Seminarand he has been our team leader since he developedthe class ten years ago. He has improved it everyterm and keeps current on all the new ideas in thepublic policy arena. If you think he was a goodsoccer coach, he’s an even better teacher!”

And as far as hobbies go, Dr. DiNitto enjoysgathering with retired colleagues for card games, picnicking with one another’s families, andenjoying his grandchildren. He also is quite thehorse racing handicapper.

“Twelve years ago, Empire State asked me to puton a handicapping show as an alumni fundraiser,”says DiNitto. “Now, the sold-out event isattended by 500 at the Racing Hall of Fame.”

Dr. DiNitto has two grown children and liveswith his wife, Maria, who caught his eye in1966 when she won the Miss NewburghBeauty Contest. “When I saw her in thatcontest, I had to ask her out," he says. "We'vebeen married forty-one years now.”

To many, thereis no bettercombinationthan sports andpizza. And ifyou’re a fan ofeither, thanyou’ve probablyheard the nameJoe Calderone.Joe, a 1996FMCC grad, isCapital News 9’s

top sports anchor and part-time pizza shop worker.

“My family owns and operates a pizza shop inBroadalbin where my three younger brothersand I worked growing up,” says Joe. “Afterhigh school I thought 'do I want to go tocollege or do I want to keep working'? Bygoing to FMCC, I was able to do both.”

Although Joe was a Business Administration major,he gained a vast interest in media work and jumpedright into the field by doing internships at bothWRGB-TV and WCSS radio. Phil Spencer, WCSS’ssalesman, liked Joe so much he asked if he’d like todo the morning news. Although the hours werehorrific and there was no pay involved, Joe knewthe experience would be worth it.

Joe went on to earn a Mass MediaCommunications degree at SUNY Plattsburgh. While there, Joe ran the college’s TV stationwhere he was in charge of three 30-minuteshows. Two weeks before graduating fromPlattsburgh, Joe landed a job at WPTZ, an NBCaffiliate, where he ran audiotapes.

“In the ten years I’ve been in the communicationsfield, this was the best experience I had,” Joesays. “Getting out there and starting fromscratch, all behind-the-scenes, was great.Frustrating at times, but great.”

In January of 2000, Joe left Plattsburgh for a lifein White River Junction, Vermont and a job atWNNE where he started out as the producer ofnews and sports and quickly took over as thesports anchor - without any on-air experience.

“I had an anxiety attack 15 minutes prior togoing on live, I totally almost left,” says Joe.But once he was on, he was hooked. Andeveryone saw he had a real knack for it. Joe sayshe owes a lot of his on-air personality to hissports anchor idol, Rick Renner, formally ofWRGB, Albany’s CBS affiliate.

“Rick was always taking risks. He would outworkeveryone while having a blast doing it, that’s the

way I wanted to be,” says Joe.

“Rick’s motto was ‘People are going to hateyou or love you’. I guess that’s why I’ve neverbeen afraid to be a little hammy and takechances – I just put all my energy into it andgo with it.”

Within a two year time span, Joe had lived in12 different apartments as he took on variousjobs in New York, New Hampshire, andVermont. It wasn’t until December 2004 thatJoe finally found what he was looking for – afull-time position as a sports anchor forCapital News 9 in Albany.

“I love Capital News 9 and the people I work with,”says Joe. “And I love covering sports. I neverplayed in high school because I was busy working atmy family’s pizza business but right now it’s my life.I get to do cool things and cover so much, it’s sucha rush. Where else can you spend your summerseeking out and playing the area’s best miniaturegolf locations and get paid for it?”

Joe is now known as the “sports guy” onChannel 9, but one day that may change. “Iwould love to host my own show, like on theFood Network or Travel Network. That wouldbe my dream job.”

RAIDERS FINISH SEASON SIXTH IN THE NATION

The FMCC Raider basketball team was crowned Region III champion after they used a balanced attack to beatDelhi, Mohawk Valley and Herkimer over the three day tourney held at Herkimer County Community College.

The championship game was the game everyone had been waiting for, the #1 FMCC Raiders vs. #2Herkimer Generals for the title. During the first half, the game went back and forth with the Generals goinginto the locker room at the half with a seven point lead, 38-31.

When the Raiders returned to the floor for the second half, they slowly chipped away at the lead and atthe 13:00 minute mark took the lead and never relinquished it from there. The Raiders converted on manytransition baskets coming off great defense and were able to contain the Generals offensive runs. Thegame ended with the Raiders converting on their free throws and ending with an 88-78 victory which sentthe Raiders back to the NJCAA tournament after last making it in 1999-2000.

The Raiders finished with four players in double figures, led by Jason Charles with 19. Jermaine Campbell added 16points and Michael Mercedes contributed 15. Carl Munnerlyn and Vernon Johnson added 12 and 10 points respectively.Carl Munnerlyn was named tournament MVP and Jason Charles was named to the all-tournament team.

The Raiders then traveled to Delhi, NY for the NJCAA Division III tournament where they would beplaying for a national championship. Their first round was against Chicago's College of Dupage.Unfortunately, the Raiders fell to Dupage in the first round of the NJCAA Division III Championship, but throughthe game, if nothing else, they gained experience they can use to help next year's team make further progression.

RAIDERS WIN REGION III MEN'S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP

UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF HEAD COACH DAN JARVIS

The FMCC men’s soccer team advanced to the Region III Tournament for the first time since 1997 when Northville’s Wayne Beckworked the sideline and current Assistant Coach Steve Lawrence was in uniform for the Raiders. This year’s team posted a regularseason record of 10-6-0 overall and 9-6-0 in Region III competition. The selection committee awarded the Raiders a #7 seed whichpitted them against the #10 seeded Mohawk Valley CC (Utica, NY). The Hawks were at 9-8-1 on the season and 7-6-1 in Region IIIplay. When the two teams met during regular season play, the Raiders edged the Hawks 2-1 in a nailbiter. During tournament play, thegame went into overtime and the Raiders fell to Mohawk Valley 1-2.

"It was a very tough way to lose," said Head Coach Chris Rogers, "however, the Raiders are comforted with the fact that they gave100% for the entire match. We had a very good run and are hungry to get deeper in the postseason next year."
