Why Cambodia

Cambodia was chosen as the recipient country because of its overwhelming need for medical assistance and training. Carl experienced this first hand when he did his medical placement there in 2006.

Impressions : Someone said once that Cambodia changes you forever. They were right. I have seen kindness with no bounds from a people who have lost everything. I have watched dedicated doctors improve life with cardboard. They rebuild children because children are the future of this country. I have learned and seen things that I would never, and probably will never see in Australia. Cambodia has changed me, it has educated me, it has shifted my once-insular Western perspective to something else.

Adrian Lo : National Paediatric Hospital, 2010 Phnom Penh

Impressions : I spent the whole time in the surgical department, watching mostly orthopaedic procedures on deformities we just don’t see in Australia. Things like osteotomies on children suffering Rickets, triple arthrodesis surgery for talipes equinovarus and hip surgery for children who had congenital hip dysplasia but weren’t picked up until well into their childhood.

Adrian Lo : National Paediatric Hospital, 2010 Phnom Penh

Impressions : I grappled with the many reasons why such preventable deformities would still be happening, but after visiting cultural sites like Tuol Sleng (S21 prision camp) and Choeung Ek (the Killing Fields) I realized this small nation, including their medical system, is in the process of being dragged back into the 21st century after the Khmer Rouge regime sent it hurtling back to an agrarian society only 30 years ago.

Impressions : My first impression of (NPH) was one of diversity. I began on the respiratory ward, where Dr Cheung was in the middle of conducting a teaching ward round in English, French and Khmer all at once! He was interactive and the students were clearly enjoying being pushed to come up with on-the-spot hypothesis for their patients’ state of ill health. His drive to get students up to speed in foreign languages is indicative of the NPH’s focus on encouraging local students and doctors to train overseas and bring their skills and knowledge home to share.

Andrew Emanuel : Childrens Surgical Centre, 2011 Phnom Penh Angkor Children's Hospital, Siem Reap

Impressions : Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) is a non-governmental which provides free surgery to disabled Cambodian children and adults. I went with a primary goal of learning about paediatric anaesthetics and even though there was plenty of anaesthetic teaching, I feel the surgical experience offered by CSC was the most beneficial to my education

Louise Greenup : Helen Bonner Health Clinic 2012 Siem Reap

Impressions : In addition to the Helen Bonner Health Clinic, New Hope consists of a school, training restaurant, farm and outreach centre...in just four years; the school started out in a shack with no walls and now occupies an impressive two story facility, purpose built for educating the very poor. The health of villagers has also vastly improved in this time, however their living conditions remain as third world, with no running water or electricity and sometimes fertiliser bags for walls.
