Perth researchers may have uncovered a new clue in the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight370. They detected an underwater signal which could lead to a possible crash site. The signal wasdetected by underwater sound recorders 40km off Rottnest Island just after 1.30am on the 8th ofMarch the morning the plane disappeared. Curtin University Researchers have been analysing the lowfrequency sound for weeks hoping it holds a clue. Australian search authorities are taking the clueseriously. The findings from the University is not compatible with satellite data transmitted from theaircraft which is currently considered the most reliable source for information.

Researchers from CurtinUniversity are examining a low frequency underwater sound signal that could have come from MH370.Duncan says they're looking for sounds connected with the actual crash of the aircraft and it's notrelated to the black box pings. Williams says the recent signals were picked off Rottnest Island but hesays it can also originate from a natural event. Duncan says they're not confident it could be part of theaircraft but the timing is consistent with the time the aircraft may have crashed. He says they alsomanaged to correlate the signal from their system with a signal that's operated by the Comprehensive

Interview with Curtin University's Centre for Marine Science and Technology Alec Duncan. Price saysa woman was sailing with her husband on a yacht from India to Thailand, at the time MH370disappeared has claimed she saw a flaming aircraft, flying through the sky, crashed some distancesaway, and she did not tell anyone. He says the woman thought she was having some sort of mentalepisode at the time, and did not tell authorities. He says a muffled noise recorded underwater offWestern Australia on the day the flight went down, now appears it is not the flight. Duncan says thereceiver his team used was intended to pick up low-frequency cries of blue whales. He notes the

bearing for the signal intersected directly through the middle of the MH370 search arc. He says the time the sound took to reach thereceiver was consistent with the last partial electronic handshake between the missing plane and the Inmarsat satellite, plus the time itwould have taken for the sound to have travelled several thousand miles to the receiver. He says other than that of an aircraft, thenoise being studied now could be due to small undersea earthquakes. He says another team is in the efforts to track the sound ,mentioning Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation.

Recorded noise might offer clues to missing planeKeith Bradsher

Hong Kong | Scientists plan to releasedetailed information on Wednesdayabout a mysterious noise, possibly thatof an ocean impact, recorded by twoundersea receivers in the Indian Oceanabout the time Malaysia Airlines FlightMH37O ceased satellite transmissionsand vanished on March 8.

The low-frequency noise, which wasoutside the normal range of hearingand had to be sped up to be made audi-ble, appeared to have travelled halfwayacross the Indian Ocean to the receivers

.off the coast of Australia."It's not very exciting. It's not even

really a thump sort of a sound - it's moreof a dull oomph," said Alec Duncan, asenior marine science research fellowat Curtin University near Perth, whohas led the research.

"If you ask me what's the probabilitythis is related to the flight, without thesatellite data it's 25 or 30 per cent, butthat's certainly worth taking a very

close look at" Mr Duncan said. The general vicinity from which the

noise emanated is a large area of thecentral Indian Ocean off the southerntip of India and about 5000 kilometresnorth-west of Australia.

But that is not consistent with calcu-lations of an arc of possible locations inthe southeastern Indian Ocean wherethe plane, carrying 239 people, mighthave run out of fuel. Those calculationswere from Inmarsat, the global satellitecommunications company, and scien-tists have struggled to figure out the ori-gin of the noise.

A very small section of the arc thatwas searched by a deep-sea submersi-ble, without success, was about 1000kilometres off theAustralian coast

Even without the Inmarsat data, there are other possible explanationsfor the noise besides an aircraft impact,Mr Duncan said.

One would be a very small underseaearthquake that would produce a simi-lar noise audible across great distances

but not strong enough to show up onthe nearest seismometers on land, which did not record a tremor at thetime.

The direction from which the noisearrived does produce some small earth-quakes every year, although there hadnot been one in the days precedingFlight MH370's disappearance, MrFlight MH370's disappearance, Mr

Duncan added. Two receivers - oneoperated by Mr Duncan's team and theother by the Comprehensive NuclearTest Ban Treaty Organization in Vienna- produced enough data to establish thedirection from which the noise arrived. But the distance to the source of thenoise was less clear.

The result, according to Mr Duncan,

is an area of ocean roughly the size ofTexas.

Mark Prior, an acoustics expert atthe test ban organisation headquarters, said the sound might be consistent withan ocean impact or with some kind of a

sealed, air-filled container that sankinto the depths until the exterior waterpressure caused it to crumple.

Prior said the sound might have beenreflected off a seamount or underwatermountain, before travelling to the tworeceivers, so the origin of the noisecould have been somewhere else.

Mr Duncan and his team operate anundersea device off the coast of Perththat is mainly used to monitor the low-frequency cries of blue whales, theworld's largest mammals andone of itsmost endangered species.

The team's receiver, or hydrophone, records noises on an undersea datadevice, which is hauled up to the oceansurface every six months and its con-tents downloaded.NEWYORKTIMES

MH370: Scientists focus on a faint soundKUALA LUMPUR:Scientists say a faintsound captured in theIndian Ocean by twoundersea receivers aboutthe same time MalaysiaAirlines flight MH370vanished almost threemonths ago may helpsolve the mystery of theplgjie's disappearance. The New York Times

(NYT) reported that scientists involvedin a research project funded by theAustralian government, planned to revealmore information on the lowfrequencynoise, which is hardly audible, and whichtravelled some 3000 miles to the receiversoff the coast of Australia."If you ask me what's the probability

this is related to the flight, without thesatellite data it's 25 or 30 percent, butthat's certainly worth taking a veryclose look at," said Dr Alec Duncan, senior marine science research fellowat Curtin University near Perth, addingthat the sound was as inaudible as "a dulloomph".Duncan said the receiver his team used

was intended to pick up lowfrequencycries of blue whales. The recordings are cleared every six

months.

He told NYT that thetime the sound took toreach the receiver wasconsistent with thelast partial electronic"handshake" betweenthe missing plane andthe Inmarsat satellite, plus the time it wouldhave taken for the soundto have travelled severalthousand miles to the

receiver.

The place where the noise wasproduced, however, is not consistent withthe presumed final location of the planebased on Inmarsat's calculation, which issomewhere in the southern Indian Oceanoff Australia. With not even any sign of the plane's

wreckage spotted by, undersea dron.esdeployed in the multinational search for

the plane in the area, the conclusion hasbeen challenged by relatives of passengersand some experts.Fuelling the doubts was a statement

on May 29 by the Canberrabased JointAgency Coordination Centre (JACC),declaring that the search area could bediscounted as the final resting pljjce ofMH370.This is despite "pings" believed to be

those from tjie plane's f^ght recordersbeing picked up several times in earlyApril. Both'JACC chief Angus Houston and

the Australian Transport Safety Bureauhave maintained that the raw satellitedata which was released earlier showedthat the plane had indeed ended in thesouthern Indian Ocean.Duncan said other than that of an

aircraft, the noise being studied now couldbe due to small undersea earthquakes. He said although it came from an

ar?a which "does produce some smallearthquakes every year", there had beenno such incidents recorded in the dayspreceding MH370's disappearance.Flight MH370, with 239 people on board,

vanished about an hour after departingKuala Lumpur en route to Beijing onMarch 8.Several nations have come together to

take part in what has been dubbed thelargest search in history for a missingaircraft.NYT reported the research was

investigating data on the noise's origin, which they found could be an area of theocean roughly the size of Texas in the US,which is several hundred kilometres wideand "a couple of thousand kilometerslong", said Duncan.Another team in the efforts to track

the sound is from the ViennabasedComprehensive Nuclear Test Ban TreatyOrganization, which said the sound wasconsistent with an ocean impact or "withsome kind of a sealed, airfilled containerthat sank into the depths", according toNYT.

looked at the research done byCurtin University's Centre for Marine Science and Technology on thelowfrequency signal detected byrecorders on the Indian Ocean floor. The centre's senior research fel

a report said an undersea datadevice situated in the Indian Ocean

operated by scientists from CurtinUniversity detected lowfrequencynoises at around the same timeMH370 transmitted its last satellitesignals.

The noise, which was in the0100 Hz range, was also picked upby a hydroacoustic station in CapeLeeuwin, the southwestern mostpoint of Australia. That station is run by the

Comprehensive Nuclear Test BanTreaty Organisation.Data suggests the lowfrequency

noise could have been emitted fromnear the southern tip of India, some3,000 miles northwest of Australia, according to The Telegraph. If true, this would deviate

greatly from the current searcharea, which was calculated basedon the satellite data provided byInmarsat

"It's not even really a thumpsort of a sound — it's more of a

dull 'oomph'," said Alec Duncan,a marine scientist leading theresearch. — Bernama, Reuters

Time limit on jet search Natalie Brown

Authorities have allowed less thana year for a new phase of the searchfor missing Malaysia Airlines flightMH370 off WA.

The Australian Transport SafetyBureau yesterday called for con-tractors to carry out a new search, which will cover up to 60,000sqkmand must be completed in 300 days.

The “critical” requirements in-clude being able to identify theplane, map and photograph thewreckage if it is found. The contrac-tors will start within a month ofsigning once tenders close on June

30. The tender documents showauthorities were still trying to pin-point an area for the search.

Curtin University Marine Sci-ence and Technology Centre yester-day said its researchers had detect-ed underwater sounds off WA onthe day the plane vanished, whichcould narrow the search.

The university’s recorderspicked up the noises underwater offRottnest Island at 1.30am on March8 — consistent with the time of thelast satellite ping from the plane.

But senior research fellow AlecDuncan said the sounds were morelikely to be from an earth tremor.

Listening for any cluei d h ld b f i i fli hNoise under the ocean could be from missing flight MH370

RESEARCHERS say a muf-fled noise recorded under-water off Perth could hold aclue to the fate of MalaysiaAirlines flight MH370.

The five-second sound waspicked up by recorders nearRottnest Island just after1.30am (UTC) on March 8.

Researchers at Curtin Uni-versity’s Centre for MarineScience and Technology saythe noise could have resultedfrom the jet crashing into the

Indian Ocean – but it couldalso have originated from anatural event, such as a smallearth tremor.

The low-frequency noisecame from northwest of Perthand travelled a long waythrough the ocean, senior re-search fellow Alec Duncansaid. But despite initial prom-ise, calculations placed thesource of the sound thousandsof kilometres beyond MH370’spredicted flight path, which is

based on the confirmed satel-lite “handshakes”.

Dr Duncan yesterday told apress conference he was about“90 per cent” certain the noisewas not from MH370 and wasmore likely a seismic event. However, he did hold somehope that it was part of themystery of the missing jet.

“It’s such an incredible mys-tery and we find ourselves in aunique position to hopefully beable to contribute to solving it,”

he said. “Also the fact thatthere is a large number offamilies who have no ideawhat’s happened to their lovedones. If we can do anythingthat will help them, then that’sreally worthwhile.”

Dr Duncan said the noise, picked up by a passive acousticobservatory 40km west ofyRottnest, came from an areathousands of kilometres north-west of the current search areain the southern Indian Ocean.

His team calculated an “un-certainty box” for the signal’sorigin – an area that stretches4000km from southeast tonorthwest, and spans 200km-300km in width, centred southof the tip of India.

Dr Duncan said his teamwould continue to work withsearch authorities.

“(We) still have several re-corders deployed that couldconceivably have picked upsignals relating to MH370.”

Underwater sound detectedin central Indian Ocean5,000km away from thepresent search zoneby Patrick Sennyah

PETALING JAYA: Australian researchers have announced thatdeepsea microphones picked upan intense sound that may justhold vital clues to the final moments of missing Malaysia AirlinesFlight MH370.

However, the researchers werequick to point out that the likelihood of a connection could be aslow as 10% and a natural eventlike an earthquake may have alsobeen the source.According to foreign reports,

scientists from Curtin Universityin Western Australia described thesound as a dull "oomph" detectedin the central Indian Ocean, nearly 5,000km away from the presentsearch zone in the southern Indian Ocean. Some of the underwater sen

sors were set up by the United Nations as a monitor for nuclear tests, while others were put in place forAustralian research purposes.

According to Alec Duncan, fromthe university's Centre for MarineScience and Technology (CMST),the sensors picked up the signalon March 8 around the time theplane was thought to have crashed. The signal was then matched

with another underwater listening station, run by the UnitedNations' Comprehensive NuclearTestBan Treaty Organisation(CTBTO), off Cape Leeuwin, themost southwesterly mainlandpoint of Australia.

"Researchers have been exam

ining the sound for weeks now todetermine if it was the impact ofthe aircraft on the water or theimplosion of parts of the aircraftas it sank," he said.

He said soon after flight MH370disappeared, scientists at the CTBTO analysed data from their underwater listening stations, butdid not find anything of interest.

"However, when the search forthe aircraft swung to the southernIndian Ocean, scientists from Curtin decided to retrieve their acoustic recorders and checked againstthe CTBTO's earlier data," he said.

Duncan said the crash of sucha large aircraft in the ocean wouldhave been a high energy event andexpected to generate intense underwater sounds.

"We have since sent the resultsto the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) and scientistsfrom Curtin would continue to

work with the authorities."If it is related to the aircraft, it

could reduce the size of the searcharea," he added.

Meanwhile, CNN reported Martin Dolan, the chief commissionerwith the ATSB — the organisationleading the search into the disappearance of flight MH370, assaying that an international teamof experts continue to review theanalyses of Inmarsat satellite dataand aircraft performance.Dolan said he remained con

fident the final resting place ofthe missing aircraft is somewhere

along that arc, the socalled "partial handshake" with the satellite.

"We've seen all the data. We'veseen all the calculations. We arereviewing the calculations and arealso developing our own model tocrosscheck and verify that information," he said.On the underwater sound be

ing analysed by the team at CurtinUniversity, along with GeoscienceAustralia, a government agency,

Dolan was sceptical."We think those detections

may have been interesting fromthe point of view of the directionthey came, but other characteristics make it unlikely that they areassociated with MH370," he said.Early in the search for flight

MH370, the UN reported it had notdetected any explosions or planecrashes on land or water from itssensors around the globe. But therecent efforts involve pairing the CTBTO data with other sources to seewhat can be gleaned, officials said.

Attempts were made followingthe 2009 crash of Air France Flight447 in the southern Atlantic Oceanto find out if underwater listeningdevices had detected the plane'simpact but no data was found.Years later, after the plane was

located, the CTBTO again checkedits data, and still was not able toidentify signals related to the crash.

"One can always be hopeful,"added Mark Prior, a seismic acoustic analyst with the CTBTO.
