Invented in 1988 by LGR founder (O’Keefe)
• Rate of decay (1/&) depends on absorption #
• Sensitivity derived from long optical path
• Independent of laser amplitude fluctuations

LGR’s Off-Axis ICOS: Cavity-Enhanced Absorption Technique
• Optical cavity provides pathlength enhancement: Leff = L / (1-R) = c &
• Typical R = 99.995%, Leff = 3-25 kilometers (or greater)
• Extraordinarily robust - alignment insensitive, telecom-grade components
• Allows for near-IR measurements of overtone and combination bands
• Measurements using mid-IR QC lasers provide extremely high sensitivity
![Page 11: Doug Baer, Manish Gupta, Tom Owano, Robert Provencal, Ian](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021815/5868d3301a28ab65328b79ce/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)

Advantages of Off-Axis ICOS (LGR patent)
• All parameters (absorption, Leff, P, T) determined quickly (300-Hz, typical)
• Robust optical alignment ! negligible alignment drift, mechanically stable
• Off-axis alignment spatially separates beam paths through cell
! lengthens time/distance before beam retraces itself
! eliminates unwanted resonance interference effects
• Off-axis alignment eliminates optical feedback from cavity to laser source
![Page 12: Doug Baer, Manish Gupta, Tom Owano, Robert Provencal, Ian](https://reader031.fdocuments.us/reader031/viewer/2022021815/5868d3301a28ab65328b79ce/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

Transmission Spectrum
• Measure absorption, baseline, detector offset
• Measured ringdown yields Leff
• Measure/control gas flow parameters (T, P)
• Sweep laser wavelength at 100 – 500 Hz
Measured Etalon Transmission
• Accurately determines laser tuning rate
• Solid etalon (SiO2)
• Measure length and temperature
• Converts time to relative laser frequency

File Transfer MenuEach time the instrument is re-started, and each time the user enters and then exits the “File Transfer” menu or “Setup” panel, a new data file is created with a filename of the form “cciaDDMMMYYYY_fxxxx.txt”. This filename has a time stamp consisting of day (DD), month (MMM), and year (YYYY) and is followed by a 4-digit serial number (xxxx); ie., ccia08Dec2008_f0010. The serial number counts upward to provide up to 10000 unique file names each day. If the instrument is left in continuous operation, a new data file will automatically be created in order to keep data file sizes manageable. The time period between creation of new files is set in the “File Settings” menu as described later. The data files are written in text (ASCII) format and contain labeled columns as shown in Figure 10.

Figure 9: The spectrum display consists of two graphs: the top shows the voltage
from the photodetector as the laser scans across the CO2 absorption features, the
bottom shows the optical absorption fraction due to CO2 in black, and the peak fit
resulting from signal analysis in blue.
Los Gatos Research
OperationThe Los Gatos Research (LGR) CO Carbon Isotope Analyzer is easily operated via the! user interface as described in this section.
Main Panel
Display ModesWhen the instrument is turned on, it will automatically go through a 90-second initialization cycle with the Los Gatos Research logo and “Please Wait” message on the screen. After initialization is complete, the instrument will begin to draw in gas and to display results in the “Numeric” mode (see Figure 5). The 12CO2 and 13CO2
concentrations are shown in parts-per-million (ppm). The isotope ratio is shown in parts-per-thousand (pp-mil). The isotope ratio is reported relative to Pee Dee Belemnite (PDB) as shown in Equation 1.
Rev. 08-A 8 of 27
Figure 5: The CO2 concentration and isotope measurements are reported along
with the cell pressure in Torr, cell temperature in Celsius, and the current data
filename. The mirror ring-down time in microseconds is measured and
reported as well.

Real-time spatial, temporal measurements of'13C and CO2 at ZERT test site
Deployment of CCIA for Carbon Sequestration
• Ability to record distinct !13C signature of CO2 release
• Measures !13C from ambient sources (plant respiration)
• Records physical map of release transverse to pipe
• Records temporal variations of release at several locations
• Multi-port system provides real-time spatial and temporal measurements of !13C and CO2
