The students have been using the large harvest of pumpkins in the kitchen preparing pumpkin gnocchi, pumpkin wontons, pumpkin and lentil salad. The new fortnight’s menu is utilising Jerusalem artichokes from the garden in recipes such as Jerusalem artichoke soup and Jerusalem artichoke and rocket salad. The recipes for the new fortnight menu will be on the website soon. Rocket from the garden plus thyme and basil is also being used. The students have been enjoying learning some slightly more challenging recipes which they have never cooked or eaten before. With more challenging recipes comes more difficulty with finishing the recipes within the class time, but the students have done really well with managing the time to cook and serve the food.

The number of volunteers we have had assisting with kitchen classes has been great lately but if any parents or grandparents would like to come and be part of the program, they are more than welcome.

A REMINDER THAT FRIDAY IS A CURRICULUM DAY: There will be no OHSC service on this day due to low booking numbers. We apologise for any inconvenience.

For the past week in OSHC there has been an opportunity for lots of outdoor play, which the children really enjoy. Art and craft activities have focused on people. We have stretched our skills and imaginations making peg people, popstick puppets, masks and cylinder people. The “open” craft box remains a very popular alternative.

For those of you who have not yet heard, Kane Crawford is sadly no longer with us on a regular basis. We wish him all the best for the future.

Specialist’s Corner - Music Now into term 2, most grades at Dorset Primary are now involved in group orchestration using the many instruments available in the music room. It will become a focus of this term to enable children to explore and choose instruments that will be best utilised in orchestrated arrangements of songs. We begin by learning the lyrical rhythm with body percussion, then the words and melody adding complimentary (Ostinato) rhythms using voice, percussion and Xylophones. Known as the 'Orff' technique, this enables full inclusion at all musical levels and abilities, facilitating and encouraging extension of prior knowledge and instrumental skills. This teaching method helps to empower children in the music room to make choices about instruments, their sounds and effectiveness in group playing, thus enabling class discussions to build musical language and playing techniques. Senior students will soon be moving to drama activities in the coming weeks, involving script writing, editing and group performance.

I hope you have a better understanding of the technological age at Dorset Primary School. Many new parents were welcomed into our school. Thank you Jodi Wilkins and the staff for all the hard work in showcasing our wonderful school. Chocolate Drive Just a reminder to keep selling the chocolates. This is a great fundraiser for our school, as well as tasting pretty good. If you need more boxes of chocolates they are available from the office. Understanding Staff Performance A new model that will help to support and measure the performance and development of teachers and principals has been released. The new approach, developed in consultation with Victorian principals and teachers, places a strong focus on student achievement. It will allow school communities to focus on what's most important to them and support every teacher to continuously improve. This model will promote and support high levels of professionalism and excellence in schools and allow teachers, principals, school staff, parents and students to work together to make sure Victoria’s education system is one of the best in the world. From Term 2, 2014 Teachers’ performance will be linked to their school's strategic plan, student outcomes and to Australian professional standards for teachers. Student outcomes will include improved achievement, engagement and wellbeing. Performance and development is not new to Victorian schools – but this model provides a clearer and more effective way to lift achievement across the state. Most successful organisations have strong performance and development models, and Victorian government schools are no different. What this means

community.

Your child’s teachers will get the feedback and support they need to continuously improve.

All teachers’ performance will be appraised across all elements of teaching practice, including student

For example, a teacher whose school has high absenteeism could include goals to address this in their performance plan. Teachers and principals will not be judged or evaluated on students' NAPLAN scores or standardised tests. There are no quotas and principals are still responsible for managing teacher performance. To keep hair tidy and if long, tied back in a school uniform colour hair tie, scrunchie or headband. Transitioning to black only shoes/runners by 2015.
