BRAINSTORM STUDIOS
ONE WEEK TO GO!
I hope you are as excited about seeing your child
perform as we all are. I have been able to have a
“sneak preview” and I know you will not be
disappointed . The combined efforts of staff and
parents (and of course the students) will be
realised next week as the students “strut their
stuff” on stage. The script is amazing, the songs
wonderful, the costumes magnificent and the
students perform like veterans of the stage.
Mrs Whiteoak is to be congratulated on
presenting a school performance of such a high
standard and one that every student
participates in.
A reminder that our school performance is an
integral part of the school’s curriculum and it is
expected all students will attend on both nights.
Tuesday 10th
September is the first night of our
school production and Thursday 12th
is the second
night.
A WONDERFUL NIGHT IS IN STORE FOR
YOU ALL!
FEDERAL ELECTION 7TH
SEPTEMBER
This Saturday our school is a
polling booth area. In order to
ensure the safety of our
community members, the staff
car park will be locked. At the
last election there were a few
situations that caused concern to
us as some people jostled for
parking spaces as well as allowing young children
to be walking between cars…a danger in itself.
I would recommend that you try to vote as early as
you can. A barbeque will be in action from
8.30am and I thank all of those parents who have
volunteered their time to cook and serve.
NO HAT, NO PLAY
It is school hat time again.
As of Monday 2nd
September, all students are
required to wear hats outside during recess and
lunchtime. Any student without a
school hat, will need to sit in the
designated area. If you know your
child has lost his/her hat now is the
time to purchase one. Please make sure
your child’s hat is clearly named!
Please ensure your child wears the appropriate
school hat.

FAILURE IS A GOOD TEACHER
Uninterrupted success is less satisfying than
success intertwined with failure. That is not rocket
science. A study at the University of Colorado
Denver Business School concludes that success
may be sweeter, but failure is the better teacher.
We have a tendency to ignore failure or try not to
focus on it. Vital lessons for the future are
overlooked in the rush to put a brave face on
disappointment.
How many students feel downcast because they
fare worse than their friends in tests and exams?
They have been so brainwashed into thinking of
education as a race where one must clear every
fence, that they are unable to put their results into
context.
Most well-known successful people have either
come up the hard way or had to overcome periods
of chronic self-doubt, where the whole world
seemed to be against them Winston Churchill was
absolutely miserable at school. J.K.Rowling
received a mountain of rejection slips before
finding a publisher for the Harry Potter novels.
There are hundreds of examples of people who
learned from their failures, bounced back and
found success.
I love the thoughts of Benjamin Franklin “I didn’t
fail the test. I just found one hundred ways to do it
wrong.
And this one is fantastic by Robert Schuller
Failure doesn’t mean you are a failure…it just
means you haven’t succeeded yet.
We should all keep this in mind!
NUNAWADING CRICKET CLUB
Thanks to Mr Robert Nash, Nunawading
Cricket Club will conduct cricket clinics at
school on 17th
, 18th
and 19th
September during the
Physical Education sessions. It is wonderful to see
local sporting clubs give so generously of their
time to provide the opportunity for students to
learn new sport skills.
Maybe we have a future Test cricketer in the
making
MEASLES
We have been alerted that there have been
reported cases of measles in students at local
schools.
CLASS FORMATION
The process for student placement for 2014 will
commence in a few weeks as staffing becomes
clearer. We aim to have well-balanced classes of
students that take into account each student’s
social, emotional and academic development and
friendship groups.
Class compositions are based on Level groupings
(Level One – Prep; Level Two – Grades One and
two; Level Three – Grades Three and Four and
Level Four – Grades Five and Six.)
We endeavour to make optimum use of prior
knowledge teachers, parents and others have of
each student prior to class placement.
This is a lengthy process and entails much
discussion and sharing of information between
staff.
If there is any information you consider
important for the school to be aware of, please
put it in writing and return to me before
Monday 7th
October, 2013.
Consideration beyond this date will
not be considered.

Racism ……It stops with me
This week in 3/4G and 3/4A…..
we learnt about how important it is to stop racism.
Here are some of the things we learnt:
In America, about 50 years ago white people
had to sit at the front of the bus and black
people had to sit at the back. If a white
person got on, and the bus was full, a black
person had to get off. This was the law.
The law was called segregation.
A woman called Rosa Parks decided not to get
up for a white man on the bus and she had to
go to jail.
After that, all the black people refused to get
on the bus until the law was changed.
Martin Luther King gave a speech 50 years
ago, where he said “I have a dream.”
He wanted little black boys and girls to be able
to hold hands with little white boys and girls
so they could all be friends.
People listened to Martin Luther King and the
laws were eventually changed.
A couple of months ago a footballer called
Adam Goodes experienced racism.
Racism hurts peoples’ feelings.
It’s now against the law to be racist.
There is now a campaign called “Racism…..it
stops with me” to help young people learn not
to be racist.
In our grades we have taken the pledge. Will
you join us?

KITCHEN NOTES
Entering the kitchen today I was
greeted by the waft of perfume
from our Jasmine plant. Aah!
Spring!! It’s a beautiful time in the
garden at the moment as the warm
weather seems to have brought it to
life again The broad beans are
growing taller by the day, beetroot
bulbs are popping out of the ground
and the chickens are providing us
with a very generous bounty of eggs.
How lucky we are at Burwood
Heights to have our wonderful
garden.

After School Care Program
Program Update 05.09. 2013
Hi Everyone!
We're quietly plodding along towards the end of Term Three and I am happy to say that our
numbers this term have been improving fantastically. A big thank you to all who have been regulars
to OSHClub and a big welcome to all our new people and to the ones who have joined us again
after a long break.
Since we're welcoming Pooja back to the group, I thought I'd let her tell us about her experience
while she was off doing her Cert 3 placement.
Hi everyone,
I (Pooja) am back from my work placement at a Long Day care centre. The experience was
enriching, and different. I worked with a 5 months - 6 years age group and the work and activities
involved were quite different to the 6-12 age group I usually work with.
As much as I enjoyed time at the Day Care centre, I'm happy to be back. More importantly, it was
touching to see that the kids were happy to see me again. I'm grateful to the kids as well as the
parents for being patient with me moving in and out of the program.
Have a great week :)
