Statement-Strengths: I have many strengths that I believe make me the most ideal candidate for 4th ward alderman. I have strong leadership, organizational, communication and problem-solving skills which I honed throughout my career and fully employed during the years that I served as Chief of Staff for the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois Capital Development Board from 2010-2015. I take pride in maintaining integrity and being a responsible and accountable for my actions.
During the time the time that I worked as a public servant for the state of Illinois in the capacity of Chief of Staff for the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Illinois Capital Development Board (CDB), I thoroughly enjoyed working and collaborating with staff members, legislators and community leaders. I established and chaired committees that had diverse organizations as members including the Illinois Black Chamber of Commerce, Hispanic American Construction Industry Association (HACIA), Federation of Women Contractors (FWC) and the Illinois Road Builders.
In 2011, I moved from the Gold Coast to the Lake Park Crescent community in the 4th ward during a time when the real estate market was in recovery. Having been a former resident of the prosperous Gold Coast, I immediately recognized the dearth of businesses and services and the tremendous for community growth and development. With keen interest, I follow numerous planned improvements such as the 35th street, 41st street and 43rd street bridge projects, the new Mariano’s, and various developments in Hyde Park. I’m very excited about all of these projects and look forward to continuing the momentum by attracting additional commercial opportunities in the 4th ward.
My educational and professional background in engineering, real estate, transportation, capital development provides me with a unique preparation to serve the people of the 4th ward. If appointed as alderman, I intend to employ responsible leadership, accountability and transparency when working with and on behalf of the residents of the 4th ward.
Statement-Opinion: As a 5 year resident of the 4th ward, I am often frustrated by the media spotlight on south side criminal activity, gangs, guns and drugs which further perpetuates the notion that the south side is not a safe place to live, raise a family or to have a business.
In my opinion the most pressing issues are crime, economic development and jobs. This is not to say that other issues are not important. There is a perception that the 4th ward is not safe due to criminal activity and there is clearly a strong need for more economic development and decent paying jobs.The solution to reducing crime and improving the community’s perception is complex and multi-faceted and involves energizing and working with the community, public officials and the full cooperation and effective support of the police department. The community has to be assured that if and when the police are called upon for assistance there will be a timely appropriate response. The establishment of block clubs, building relationships with neighbors, and looking out for one another is vitally important in the fight against crime. Additionally, the effective involvement of the police department is critical.
With additional economic development opportunities there will be an increase in jobs which will hopefully lead to a significant reduction in crime. There is an interdependent relationship between economic development, jobs and crime rates. As criminal activity wanes this will also lead to an increase in economic development which leads to jobs. I look forward to a 4th ward where all streets are perceived to be safe where families can enjoy time together and children can play anywhere without fear of harm.
