PURPOSE
This unique internship opportunity exists to provide a recent graduate with an opportunity to put theory into practice in the field of community service. In this work experience role, you will support our after-hours domestic violence crisis response team, assisting Women and Families experiencing Domestic/ Family Violence within the Northern Sydney District. The intern will need to be available during core business hours only. The Intern will learn to provide assessment, basic crisis counselling, safety planning, accommodation options and practical support to clients.
TASKS MAY INCLUDE
Some of the things you may become involved will include:
Learn to prioritise and complete tasks set by after-hours team under the direction and with support of coordinator.
Learn how to write risk assessments and assess client safety. Meet with clients at various sites and in the community. Provide basic essential items and
other practical supports to clients Liaise with key stakeholders, provide advocacy and make referrals under the guidance of
supervisor Participate in team meetings and group supervision Learn how to record information and utilise database in accordance to policy and procedures Learn to apply theory to practice when interacting over the phone and face to face with clients Under the direction and with the daily support of the coordinator, carry a caseload of 1-2
clients when required

Develop rich understanding of the complex needs of women and children experiencing domestic and family violence and provide advocacy and support to enhance the lives of this client group

Opportunity to develop safety planning skills for clients fleeing domestic violence, determining support needs and actively facilitating this in the community
Learn critical industry skills and enhance understanding of the welfare sector.
REQUIREMENTS
Studying towards qualifications in a relevant community services field e.g., Diploma / Degree in Social Work, Social Science/ Welfare, Counselling, or related discipline.
Knowledge of domestic violence
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Current and valid NSW Driver’s Licence with comprehensive insurance
Competent computer literacy, especially Microsoft Word and Excel, Outlook
