Rice Daily Fundamental Report 10 July 2020 Domestic Market Highlights: Under the pandemic situation of COVID-19, Indian government decided to distribute free grains to around 80 crore people till November-2020. Under the scheme of Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY), 203 lakh tonnes of food grains are to be distributed from April to November, of which 201.1 lakh tonnes will be allocated in July to November, which includes 91.14 lakh tonnes of wheat, 110 lakh tonnes of rice. Punjab govt had targeted 3 lakh hectares for diversification. Though spring maize (March to June) hasn’t fetched good prices for farmers in the on-going harvesting season, farmers in Punjab are still diversifying from paddy to maize (June to October) in the on-going kharif season. Acreage under maize has already increased by 4 per cent as compared to the last kharif season while sowing is still underway and will continue till the end of this month. Acres under maize in Punjab this year are among the highest in the last two decades. Kharif season maize is always encouraged because it is one of the best alternatives to water guzzling paddy. The state government has set a target of 3 lakh hectares (LH) to be brought under maize. Last year, 1.59 LH areas was under maize and this year till June 30, the total area touched over 1.65 LH — which is 6,000 hectares (14,820 acres) more than last year. In the past two de cades since 2000- 01, the state could touch 1.65 LH thrice in the year 2000-01, 2001-02 and 2014-15, but this year it has already gone a little above 1.65 LH, while sowing will continue all of July. During the current year in Tamil Nadu, the target of paddy area has been set of 3.50 lakh acres and 6.07 lakh tonnes of paddy in the Kuruvai for this (Kharif) season. So far, paddy cultivation has been completed on 2.17 lakh acres there. The Cauvery Delta consists of seven districts comprising Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, the entire part of Nagapattinam and some parts of Gichi, Cuddalore and Ariyalur districts. In the Kuruvai (Kharif) season last year, there was paddy cultivation area of 2.90 lakh acres and 4.99 lakh tonnes of paddy was produced. The planting season of Kuruvai paddy usually starts from June and continues till August. Sometimes, transplanting continues till some time beyond this. But this time it is likely to be finished by the end of July. About 6.80 million hectares area coverage under paddy has been reported as on 03 Jul 2020, compared to last year acreage of 4.92 million hectares. Thus 1.88 million hectares more area has been covered compared to last year. Higher area is reported from the states of Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Telangana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Orissa, whereas lower area is reported from the states of Punjab, Assam, Tamilnadu, West Bengal. According to Indian Prime Minister, around 80 Cr. BPL people would be benefitted under PMGKAY which has already started from 1 July. Around 200 lakh tons of food grains (either wheat or rice) and 9.78 lakh tons of gram will be distributed under this scheme. India’s rice stocks in the central pool as on June- 1, 2020 stood at 41.44 million tons up by 16.35% from 35.62 million tons recorded during the corresponding period last year, according to data from Food Corporation of India (FCI). India's rice stocks in the central pool are down by 6.19% by from 44.18 million tons recorded on Feb-01, 2019. Highest stock could be seen in the state of Punjab (108.47 lakh tons) followed by A.P (25.76 lakh tons) Haryana (24.61 Lakh Tons) and Chhattisgarh (15.80 lakh tons). Due to the arrival of monsoon at the right time and a strong system of irrigation resources, the farmers of Telangana are showing tremendous enthusiasm this time in the cultivation of kharif crops. It is to be known that the Kharif season in Telangana is called Vanakalam season. The normal average area for kharif crops in Telangana has been set at 1.03 million acres, of

Due to the arrival of monsoon at the right time and a strong system of irrigation resources, the farmers of Telangana are showing tremendous enthusiasm this time in the cultivation of kharif crops. It is to be known that the Kharif season in Telangana is called Vanakalam season. The normal average area for kharif crops in Telangana has been set at 1.03 million acres, of

which 34.53 lakh acres or about 33 per cent has been sown. Only 2.60 lakh acres were sown in the same period last year. The normal average area of paddy is 62 thousand acres, of which 27.25 lakh acres have been planted.

Farmers in Bangladesh are showing tremendous enthusiasm in paddy cultivation due to good monsoon rains. There the cultivation of “Aus” paddy in Rangpur division is very popular among the farmers. Its area has reached a new record level of 64 thousand hectares. This area is the largest in the last 20 years.

Indian farmers are showing great enthusiasm in the sowing of kharif crops due to the extremely favourable weather and monsoon conditions. As a result, the total sowing area has jumped from 154.53 lakh hectare last year to 315.63 lakh hectare, while vigorous sowing is still going on in different parts of the country. As far as paddy is concerned, its area has also increased by about 10 lakh hectare compared to last year to 37.71 lakh hectare. The entire country has reached the monsoon and with good rains everywhere, it is easy for the farmers to increase the speed of sowing of kharif crops.

The Agriculture Department of Karnataka has released the fourth advance estimate of crops produced during the 2019-20 season. Under this, the production of all commodities except sugarcane is projected to increase compared to the 2018-19 season. According to the Agriculture Department, the production of rice is expected to improve from 34.48 lakh tonnes to 37.43 lakh tonnes during the 2019-20 seasons as compared to 2018-19.
