Dolphin Echo Principal’s Report Thank you to everyone involved with sports, creavity, debang, surfing and all the myriad school acvies over the past fortnight. Alongside all this we have been tesng, planning new discovery learning units and have even begun our end of year plays. We were excited to hear of the debang success at Hamlyn Banks and to see the cup in pride of place in the Year 5/6 space. We have been busily compleng assessment tasks across the school this past week and teacher conversaons have focused on gains made by students in so many areas both in curriculum and their social/emoonal learning. I have been working in the Early Years space and enjoying working alongside the team and experiencing first hand the breadth of learning gains made this year. It is always a great privilege when children are excited to share stories, their wonderings and cleverness with us. Make me this week to ask your child to share a new learning with you. You may be amazed by the depth of their thinkings. Don’t forget Monday 17th November is Report Wring Day. Students are not required at school on this day. 3-6 Team

Debating: Harriet, Sam, Harry Edwards and Geordie were our debating team this year, coached by a very skilled and helpful Mrs Hill. In total, our team competed in 7 debates, 5 of which were unseen. An unseen debate is when the two competing teams are given a topic half an hour before the debate takes place, which is all the time they have to prepare 3 speeches arguing either for or against the topic. Harriet had the role of 1st speaker, meaning she had to define the topic, explain what the team would be talking about, rebut 1st speaker arguments, then give her own two arguments. Geordie was the 2nd speaker and his role was to rebut opposing arguments before giving his own three arguments. Sam was the final speaker and his role was to rebut all arguments, before summarising our team’s case. Harry had the role of assisting with writing the speeches as well as to try and predict opposition arguments and also to either be timekeeper or chairperson for the debate. Twenty schools and thirty two teams set out to take on the debating challenge this year and six months later at the conclusion of the competition, our team managed to win all our debates and take out the title of Barwon Junior Debater’s Association Grand Final Debate Winners for 2014. Geordie and Harriet also were awarded outstanding speaker awards for the entire series.

Student Market: The next student market will be on Tuesday 25th November, from 12 noon to 12:30. Students in Grades 3 to 6 have some excellent ideas for food and craft items, with prices ranging from 50 cents to $2 and with proceeds going towards the Queenscliff Library and their fund raising efforts to install a bust of Governor Latrobe. All children in the school are invited to bring money to spend at the market and parents, friends and grandparents are invited to attend.

Junior School Council Crazy Hair Day: On Monday 3rd November we had school sports and this year we had another special event on that day, “Crazy Hair and or Hat Day”, which was a fantastic fundraiser to raise money for Ms Fewkes for her 60km, 2 day walk on the “Weekend Walk to End Women’s Cancers”, benefitting the Peter Mac clinic. Everyone came along with great hairstyles and hats and we managed to raise an amazing $259.30. Ms Fewkes would like to thank everyone for participating and helping her to raise money for such an important cause.
