He has been at the shelter since August 5, 2014. He does well with cats and most dogs, but he does not like being manhandled. He does tend to mark but does not tolerate having a male wrap put on. He should not be in a home with small children. He is generally a sweet guy who just needs a spot to be! TEMPEST Next is Tempest, a personal favorite of mine. She is a 5 year old chiweenie! She has been at the shelter since she came in pregnant on July 3, 2014. Her babies were all adopted but she is still here! She loves other dogs and tol- erates cats unless they jump on the bed when she is on the bed. Then she will chase them. She is very housetrained! Her issue is with meeting new people. She is the kind of dog you would have to spend time with before she will let you touch her. She should not be in a home with young children. She is a bit of a challenge to get to know, but once she trusts you she will roll over for belly rubs and loves to snuggle in your bed! How can you resist those ears! CJ Then we have little CJ. He is a pug/chi mix just about a year old. He is going a bit crazy here having been here since December 7, 2014. He was brought in as a stray. He can be a bit aloof in the beginning but loves to play and is good with other dogs. He would need to meet you a couple of times initially to get used to you, but does warm up. He has not been tested with cats. He would also do best in a home with no young children. He just needs someone to give him a chance! MONTY Next up is Monty a 6-year- old Chihuahua who came in as a stray on January 1, 2015. He likes most other dogs, as long as they are fairly calm, and seems to be fine with cats. He does have a heart murmur, but he does not need any treatment or med- ication for that. He will need a house training routine. GIZMO Gizmo is a cute terrier mix boy born around 2009. He came to us originally on 12/1/14 due to his owner having knee surgery and believe he was too active for her to care for. He was adopted and then returned Continued on page 7

FROM THE WORLD OF GUSBy Gus Suro

Some people have called me wild and crazy, and sometimesI am. The truth is that I love those times with all myheart and soul. Not everyone has those “going to thecircus” times so often, and goes out of their gourd whenthey happen. An example of one of those times wouldbe whenever Mom or Dad comes home and when weget to go on a ride in the car, or when we can take offdown the steps in hot pursuit of a squirrel.

But you have to understand that I also enjoy gettingdog treats from Mom, napping, and just lying aroundfeeling warm, loved, and well-cared for. That’s how I fillmost of my day. The crashing, squeaking, thrashing, banging times are just more dramatic. I don’t have toworry about whether I will have the energy for the nextadventure when the good times roll.

The fact is that I rarely worry at all. Maybe I do get alittle stressed when Mom and Dad don’t come when Iexpect them to. Remember that I was left by the side ofthe road when I was a little puppy. I don’t ever want tofeel abandoned again!

My most favorite day of all is the days that the MaxFundhad its Lucky Mutt Strut. I just love everything about it:the friendly people walking their dogs, or just sittingaround picnicking, the dogs of all shapes and sizes, thebeautiful park, the squirrels, and the happy feeling. Thisyear, we’re going to have a festival in addition to all ofthe other attractions.

Mom comes to the event but can’t do the walk becauseof her bad hip. Did you know that she got hit by a carjust like I did? Well, not just like me. She was drivingher car, not running in the street. Another driver fellasleep and crashed his car into hers. Dad likes to walkwith Gypsy and me but is not as strong as he used tobe. We don’t make it easy on him because we were farmdogs in South Carolina; we never learned how to

behave on a leash. Dad says that he will do it one moreyear if enough people pledge money for MaxFund.

I don’t know what pledge means, but if they are bettingon me they have a winner. I sure hope they do it forDad and me and MaxFund. MaxFund takes care ofinjured dogs and cats, just like I was.

I will keep you posted.Happy Tails,Gus

I am sure you are wondering what could be so exciting at this time of year. Holidays are over, no “snow days” off aswe don’t have school age children living here and Dad’s office is just up the stairs. Well, it is MICE. Yup. Mice. Youwould think they would be smarter than to come into a home with not one but two cats. Surely they can smell us,and they do have a brain. To be fair, the first one must have fallen into the window well. That was almost the end ofhim except Mom was there to save him. Gizmo was sitting there wanting to be let out and Mom noticed his intensestaring so as she opened the window and Gizmo shot out, she quickly pushed him out of the way and yelled for Dadto get her a plastic glass from the counter. All the while she is fending off Gizmo and trying to make sure the mousedid not leave the window track where he was sitting and trying to decide what to do. I mean, human on one sideand mouse eating cat on the other side. Well, he just froze. Good thing too as that gave Dad time to get the glass toMom so she could scoop up the mouse before Gizmo got him. I just sat and watched. I don’t do mice; that isGizmo’s department. Mom took mouse outside and set him free. So ends the first mouse episode.

Later that day Mom and Dad were working on a project and Mom had to get something from the garage. Sheheard a sound like when Gizmo digs at the glass to come in from the window well. So she stopped and listened…nothing. She thought she must be hearing things. Then the sound comes again. It is coming from an unused dogfood dispenser hanging on the wall. She ran out back and got Dad and then she grabbed a tall wastebasket thatwas handy and got ready to put it underneath the opening but Dad said, not so fast. He wanted to see how bigthe thing was inside, little mouse or big rat. Well, just little mouse. So Mom held the wastebasket and Dad pulledthe handle and down the mouse came, along with some very old dog food. Good catch Mom. So, for the secondtime in one day Mom takes a mouse outside to find his family.

Don’t you just love a story with a happy ending? I do.

You know, looking back on things, they might have made an interesting toy but Mom says that would not be nice.Well, that’s all for now.

OLD SCHOOLThe aging of the baby boom generation poses a challengefor the entire pet industry, and Hispanics' acceptanceof American culture is key to its health, marketresearch firm Packaged Facts said in a summary of arecently published report for sale on its website, packagedfacts.com.

The Rockville, Md., firm said 45 million U.S. householdshave dogs and 30 million have cats. Twenty millionhave other types of pets. Most cat and dog owners consider their pets vital to their mental and physicalhealth, the firm said.

In the approach to 2020, the group of Americans whoare 65 and older will grow at four times the rate of theadult population as a whole. Currently 53 percent ofthose 65 to 69 years old own pets, but that figure dropsto 34 percent of those older than 70 years, PackagedFacts said.

Comprehensive analysis shows Hispanic pet ownersalready are disproportionately important to the petindustry as owners of birds, and are vital to its overallfuture health as the Latino population further buildswhat Packaged Facts calls significant contributions tomaintaining ownership of dogs and cats.

SMELL CHECKBehaviorists have shown for the first time that cats mayprefer to make decisions in locating food based on sightrather than smell.Researchers at the University of Lincolnin England used visual and olfactory cues to lead six catsthrough a maze to food. Four of the six picked visual cuesover odor cues. One cat preferred to use its nose and thesixth showed no preference for one sense over the other.

The findings were published by the internationaljournal Applied Animal Behaviour Science.

FORTUNE-ATE DOGA New Hampshire owner and trainer of guard dogsreports that his family has declined offers for as much as$500,000 for Hulk, their giant pit bull who at 17 monthsold tips the scales at 175 pounds. Video of Hulk, ownedby Marlon and Lisa Grennan, of Dark Dynasty K9's,went viral on puppytube.com after an interview withBarcroft TV. The international company Barcroft Mediabills itself as specializing in “the amazing side of life.”

The Grennans said that while Hulk is trained to be agood guard dog that can break a grown-up's arm in theblink of an eye, he also is a gentle giant on whose backtheir 3-year-old son rides.

It's estimated that Hulk's offspring may fetch $25,000to $30,000 per puppy, Barcroft TV said.

FIRST PET TIMINGAmong tips for selecting your child's first pet, KarenBecker, a Chicago veterinarian, writes for theHuffington Post:

Wait for the child to express consistent, genuine interest in having a pet. Usually that's beyond age 5.

Evaluate the child's maturity and responsibility, including ability to take direction, use common sense, be calm and show empathy for animals. A child with those traits probably is ready for a pet, Becker said.

Discuss the permanency of a pet and instill an understanding that animals are a lifetime-of-the-pet commitment, not a throw-away. The whole family should be willing to step into a care role to set an exampleand not give up an animal if the child loses interest.

Look for a pet at a shelter, such as MaxFund Animal Adoption Center. Doing so helps children understand the plight of homeless animals and the rewards of giving them a deserving home.

1.3 MILLION MAKES NO. 1TheIloveCatsSite.com, which set a one-month record of 1.3million visitors in 30 days, has rebranded itself asIHeartCats.com, Pet Age magazine reported in early March.

“We wanted our name to represent the feelings we allshare for our cats and the new brand does this perfectly,”founder and CEO Justin Palmer was quoted. Pet Agesaid the record visits puts it at the top of all online catsites in terms of viewers per month.

Dear MaxFund,

Thank you for treating our “baby Lyla” so well! She is agorgeous Cocker Spaniel, black and frisky!! She makesme take her for short walks 3 times a day. We haven’tyet caught on to her sweet but lively antics, but, she isthe boss at our house, so it’s taking time (not really). She is trying to catch onto our habits too.

Just want you to know we love her and she makes us laugh, though she is too heavy!! Wish I could carry weight like she can. Ha, Ha!

Janet & Jerry Lyon

Dear MaxFund,

Just a note to let you know how Skeeter is doing. Hecame into my house and heart last April and has takenover giving me so much love and attention. He is a charmer.

Skeeter and I are making this donation to help Shorty. We know he will come through with flying colors.

Best to you all,Skeeter & Pat

Dear MaxFund,

Five weeks ago, I adopted Coconut. I was veryimpressed with the adoption center. The applicationwas thorough and represented a caring staff for findingappropriate adopters. Coconut was surprisingly fit and

healthy. Although she was shaking with fear, I felt animmediate connection with her and decided it wasworth the risk that she may never be unafraid andtotally functional.

I wrote to the Humane Society at St. Thomas to findout more about Coconut’s background. They respondedquickly with a nice note of thanks for saving her life! They were interested in how she was doing andrequested a picture of her. They too, took good care ofher after finding her on a beach. Sending her to theMaxFund was a magnificent endeavor. After a year inadoption centers, I found her right here in Denver.

Coconut is progressing with each passing day. I haveearned her trust and we have established a strong bond. She no longer shakes and is now frolicking in the parkand racing around me in bursts of energy and happiness. She now wags her tail when getting me in the morning, and when it’s time to go out. We are still working ontrusting other people and she’s making progress. I loveher with all my heart. She deserves to have a goodhome!

Thank you for all your caring and patience,Ron Schroeder, CNMT

Dear MaxFund,

Lucy adopted us this past December via the Maxfund(we kept her name you chose). I was so taken by theamazing bond she had with a couple of folks on yourstaff, that I wanted to send an update and let you knowthat she is doing AWESOME!

We LOVE this little nugget despite her strange quirks, shoe destroying and unwillingness to go potty outsidewhen it's below 30ish degrees. Actually, in the interest of full disclosure; Winston her big brother Chihuahua; also a MaxFund adoptee isn't quite sold yet, but he tolerates her...

Thank you for allowingus the privilege to provide forever homes for both of them.

Go Well,Jodee Brekke

because he did not do well with the 9-year-old in thehome. He is dog aggressive while on a leash but does wellwith other small dogs. He needs to be walked on a harnessbecause he has a collapsing trachea and will cough.Gizmo is very afraid of loud noises as well as bikes, joggers, skateboards, etc. He would do best in an apartment or with a high fence. He can climb a chain-link fence. He does need to be on a strict house-trainingschedule but is mostly house-trained. He loves car ridesand is a cuddle bug. In his previous home he was not leftalone for more than 4 hours at a time, but would proba-bly be OK if left alone longer. He is a sweet boy but couldcertainly use work on his fear issues. He would probablynot do well with cats.

OLIVIAOlivia arrived atMaxFund 11/08/2011.She was found tied to thedoor with some sort ofinjury to her hind end.She is now about 10-years-old. She was in badshape and had to be hos-pitalized for a little whilebut really turned around and did well. We don’t knowmuch about her past but we do suspect there was somesort of abuse because of Olivia’s distrust of new people.Olivia has never been adopted or even fostered. One ofour wonderful volunteers has taken Olivia home on a week-end or two and she did great! She needs to be in a homewith no stairs as she is very arthritic. She can go out onshort walks and does well with pain medication. She woulddo best in a home where she is the only dog, or even withanother calm quiet dog that doesn’t get in her face. Sheshould not be in a home with a cat or small children. Olivia isa wonderful dog once she gets to know you. She does tendto nip at people she is not familiar with. She is receivinglaser treatments for her arthritis.

SHORTYShorty is a 1-year-oldsuper-sweet lab mix whowas surrendered to us onAugust 29, 2014. She isparalyzed in her hindend and her spine is verycurved from a birthdefect. She loves to playbut is still very much apuppy. We are working

on getting her some sort of mobility device because she ishurting her legs by dragging them around. She is incontinent, and will need someone who is understandingof that. She likes other dogs, but they tend to be afraid ofher because of the way she moves. She is going to hydro-therapy and would need someone who is able to continueto take her to that. She will also need to be checked everymonth or so for urinary tract infections. There is nosurgery to be done to correct her spine but we are certainlyworking on something to make it easier for her to getaround. She has an amazing spirit and never lets anything get her down.

PETEYPetey is a 7-year-old poodle mix who wastransferred in from ahigh kill shelter inKansas in last May. Hewas adopted but returnedafter two months becausethe owner was diagnosedwith cancer. He was thenadopted again August 14,2014 and returned December 12, 2014. They said he wasn’t house-trained and would growl and bite at them.Turns out he had bladder stones, a urinary tract infection, and a torn ACL. He will need to be on a special prescriptionurinary diet for life. He has had his ACL tear repairedand is working on losing weight. If you have other animalswe should do a meet-and-greet to see how he gets alongwith them. We would love for him to be in a foster homeuntil he can find his forever family.

BRUNOBruno is a 3-year-oldpug/chi mix who came tothe shelter December 7,2014 . He does not seemto like other dogs so hewould be best as an onlydog. He does seem to likefemale dogs more thanmale dogs and we areworking on his social-

ization with others. He is great with people and woulddo fine in a home with children. He has not been testedaround cats. We would love to see him in a homeinstead of at the shelter!

COMMON DOG FEARS ANDPHOBIASBy Amy Bender, Dog Expert; About.com

ogs can suffer from a number of different fearsand phobias. These phobias can have a variety ofcauses, including lack of early socialization,

genetics, or a negative experience. A dog’s fears andphobias may lead to signs such as cowering, trembling, drooling, barking, destructive behavior, and, in somecases, aggression. The following are some common dogfears and phobias:

FEAR OF THUNDERAstraphobia is a fear of thunder, and it is a very com-mon phobia in dogs. The degree of this fear can differbetween dogs. Some may just have a mild fear of thun-der. In this case, a dog may tremble slightly or you maynotice flattened ears and a tucked tail during a thunder-storm. Other dogs may have a more severe phobiawhich leads them to hide, become destructive, or losecontrol of their bowels or bladder.

Dogs may also be able to sense a thunderstorm comingwell before you are able to detect it. This is the reason somany dog owners report seeing their dogs exhibit signs offear several minutes or longer before the storm actually hits.

FEAR OF FIREWORKSA fear of fireworks is another common dog phobia. Similarto a fear of thunderstorms, the loud and unpredictable soundsand light displays of fireworks make many dogs tremble infear. For some dogs, slowly getting them used to the soundof fireworks can eliminate the phobia. In other cases, youmay need to use management techniques.

FEAR OF BEING LEFT ALONEThe fear of being left home alone is referred to as separationanxiety. Dogs who suffer from separation anxiety tend toexhibit destructive behavior as soon as their owners leavethe house. Other symptoms include excessive barking andhousebreaking accidents when left alone.

A change in the dog owner’s behavior may help ease adog’s fears. Simply by making changes to their habitsbefore leaving the house and staying low key whenthey leave and return home, dog owners can alleviatesome of a dog’s anxiety. Desensitization, the process ofslowly getting the dog used to being left home alone, canalso be beneficial to dogs suffering from separation anxiety.

FEAR OF THE VETERINARIANIt’s not unusual for dogs to be afraid of going to the veterinarian. A dog’s first exposure to going to the vet

usually involves strange smells, being handled in newways, being restrained, and getting vaccinations. It’s nowonder dogs can easily become fearful of a trip to thevet. If there are no other phobias involved, this fear canoften be easily fixed simply by bringing a dog to the vetfor a few social visits that don’t involve an examination.

FEAR OF RIDING IN THE CARMany dogs are afraid of riding in the car. The fear is usuallydue to a lack of early exposure to car rides or negativeexperiences with riding in the car, such as getting car sick, riding in the car to be left at a shelter, or only going for acar ride for a visit to the veterinarian. It’s possible to overcomeyour dog’s fear of riding in the car by using treats andpraise to slowly lure your dog into the car, and then workingup to taking rides in small steps.

FEAR OF GOING UP AND DOWN STAIRSA dog owner may not realize his dog has a fear of going up and down stairs until his dog puts on thebreaks as they approach a set of steps. This phobia isalmost always due to a lack of early socialization. A dog who isn’t exposed to steps as a young puppy maydevelop of fear of going up and down them when heencounters a stairway later in life. Some dogs can becajoled out of their fear by making going up and downsteps into a game. Other dogs may need to learn tonavigate stairs, literally, step by step.

FEAR OF STRANGERSA fear of strangers is similar to a fear of men, but in thiscase, a dog may be afraid of anyone he doesn’t know. Thiscan be a difficult problem to overcome because it’s impossibleto teach your dog to accept every possible new person. It’simportant to allow your dog to approach new people inhis own time. Forcing a fearful dog to accept a strangercould push a dog to become aggressive.

FEAR OF CHILDRENDogs develop a fear of children for several reasons. One is alack of early exposure to children. It’s not uncommon forpeople to get a pet before becoming parents. Unless youbring a puppy into a household with children, your dogmay not get the opportunity to socialize with them. Dogsalso often have negative experiences with children. While achild’s intentions may be good, a dog may interpret over-tures of affection as a threat. Dog owners who are dealingwith a dog with a fear of children should consult a dogtrainer or behaviorist to work on this phobia.
