Dog Kennel Brochure

• You will be creating a brochure to advertise your Dog Kennel.

• You “design” puppies using your knowledge of genetics and patterns of inheritance.

• You must choose 5 traits that your puppies have:– 3 must be inherited by dominant/recessive alleles– 1 is inherited by incomplete dominance– 1 is inherited by codominance

Instructions

1. Create a title page:– Title (name of kennel), your name, and a picture

2. On section 2, list and define the following terms:– Genes– Genotype– Phenotype– Heterozygous– Homozygous– Dominant– Recessive– Chromosome

Instructions

3.In section 3, describe 5 traits that you want to look at in the dogs that you are breeding for.– 3 traits must show dominant/recessive

inheritance• What trait is dominant?• What trait is recessive?

– One trait must show incomplete dominance.– One trait must show codominance.

Instructions

• In sections 4 and 5, create Punnett squares for each of the 5 traits you picked for your dog:– Create the Punnett squares.– Label the Punnett squares with the characteristic

(ex: fur color).– Identify the dominant and recessive alleles and

their corresponding traits.– Include the probability on ALL Punnett squares of

each genotype and phenotype.

Incomplete Dominance & Codominance

• Incomplete dominance - blending or mixing of the parents’ traits– Ex: red + white = pink

• Codominance – both parents’ traits appear together– Ex: red + white = red & white
