Transcript of Documentaries
At the start of the documentary project, I
researched the codes and conventions of documentaries as well as documentaries on
the whole.
The definition of a documentary is ‘Problematic’ and our documentary follows
this. A problem within our documentary is the negatives
of takeaways against the positives of takeaways.
A problem is created initially by interviews and cutaways focusing
on takeouts and the voiceover discussing the popularity of
them.
A further interview discussing the negatives of takeouts is what raises the point and
problem of why they are so popular.
Voxpops and interviews with healthy and
unhealthy food fanatics gives a balanced
argument presenting opinions which show
positives of both.
In result, a debate is created by common
interest. In our case, the audience will discuss whether they prefer
takeouts or home cooked meals and the point of
which is most beneficial will arise.
John Grieson made the first documentary and defined it as
'The creative treatment of actuality.‘ Our documentary is reality placed on the screen as healthy has become an issue
over the years and people are now concerned with what the
contents of their food.
We also followed John Corner’s five concepts to a
documentary – - Observation
- Mise En Scene- Interviews- Exposition
- Dramatisation
We observed the general public and conducted questionnaires to collect facts. We provided relevant mise en scene in cutaways, interviews and
archive footage. We had interviews with relevant subjects. We realised the
problem within takeouts and gave a realistic image of takeaway food. We included drama by filming people in
action, before interviews.
Our documentary is a Mixed Documentary; the combination of
observation, narration and interviews. The narrator leads the
action and any interviews are spoken to the camera.
