Overview
The computer program Where in the U.S.A. is Carmen Sandiego? Tucan
be the beginning, middle or ending of a variety skills and objectives inyour classroom. You are limited only by your imagination!
The use of computers and a software package helps prepare the studentsfor the age of technology that is sweeping the nation. This can beaccomplished in an entertaining and educational manner through the use ofcomputers in all subject areas. There are a multitude of packages that canbe adapted across curriculum areas.
This unit focuses on using the program as a motivating instructional toolthat reinforces information about the United States. In the computerclassroom the program reinforces the use and purpose of data bases. Thestudents had spent sometime developing data bases in various topic areas, famous sports heroes, Presidents of the United States, the United States, and their own personal address file. The state data base developed fromthe Carmen Sandiego game include facts about the states, the geographicalsectioning of the states and the location of capitals and key cities. Thecriminals are also part of a data base, they include Gypsy Rose Lasagna,Polly Esther Fabrique, Venus H. Pencil, and 13 others. The students mustdeduce who committed the crime. The program involves problem-solvingand higher order thinking skills. Additionally it encourages the studentsto use tqference and research materials.
Students will pursue criminals throughout the United States, followingclues about the location and the identity of the criminals. They formulatetheir search and must include issuing a warrant for the correct criminal. They will use those problem-solving and critical thinking skills toapprehend the criminal in an entertaining manner.
The program allows for multi stations with appropriate number ofsoftware or might be used with one program and one computer as a classactivity. This unit is planned for a 5 to 7 day unit, though my studentsinsist they need more time to play!
Goals and Objectives:
1. To reinforce the geographical locations of the 50 states andtheir capitals.
2. To identify map symbols.
3. To trace routes on maps.
4. To use reference materials.
5. To collect data from various sources.
6. To recall and use information.
7. To analyze and evaluate data.
8. To use data to make decisions and solve problems.
9. To use critical thinking skills to plan detective strategies.
10. To take notes.
11. To review purpose and use of data base.
12. To work in cooperative groups.
13. To increase vocabulary.
14. To identify supporting details.
15. To predict outcomes based on prior knowledge.

Students using maps and a databasenals have found one of Carmen'sby Valen Mayland, Miami Lakes MiddleSchool
A week of playing Where in the U.SA.is Carmen Sandiego? was a great way toillustrate the use of data bases as well assneak in some geography lessons. TheComputer Applications students at Mia-mi Lakes Middle School competed asteams having fun as well as learning.
Alter intensive study of AppleWorks, playing Carmen Sandiego was a treat. Each class was divided into teams with 4to 5 students per team. (The lab pack wehad purchased had five disks; we bor-rowed another from the library.) We setup a reference table with an atlas, alma-nacs, geographical dictionaries, a diction-ary of words, and Fodor's USA, which
i;comes with the software. All were used extensivelyby the students.
Day 1: Using AppleWorks, students created a databaseon the criminals to famil-iarize themselves with thetraits of each one and re-view creating a database. The information, obtainedfrom an appendix in theTeacher's Guide, alsohelped them learn some ofthe program's words thatwere new to them.
Day 2: I demonstrated on abig screen monitor how toplay the game, teams were
of crimi- assigned, and we discussedthieves. how to use the reference
table.
Days 3, 4, 5: Teams accumulated scoresby catching criminals. Scores were auto-matically saved by the program and accu-mulated by giving each team the samedisk each day.
During the competition, students had apackage of worksheets to complete; thesecame from the teacher's guide: They in-cluded a report for each criminal investi-gation, a crossword puzzle, and two mapson which to plot and color cities andstates visited during each investigation.
Day 5: Each class ended competitionwith an award ceremony with each mem-ber of the winning team receiving a"Computer Whiz Kid" certificate with a

In tracking the thief and gatheringenough information for an arrest warrant, which usually takes the detective to atleast a half -dozen new locales, the playerdevelops research and reasoning skills andis gently guided to a greater understandingof geography, customs, governments, Lis-tones and economies.
It is widely held that American studentshave a poorer grsp- of geography thantheir counterparts in other countries. Whyin the world doesn't everyone use CarmenSandiego to remedy that?

Physics? Calculus? Geometry? A fineway to explore these disciplines is througha series of programs from Sensei Software, distributed by Br0derbund. Used u a sup-plement to classroom exercises, the com-puter-based interactive experiments en-able students to do hands-on tests of themajor concepts at their own pace.
The computer :makes calculus almostfun, or at least relatively painless, which ishardly the way most adults remember itfrom high school. Geometry and physics, which seemed fun at the time, are evenmore enjoyable now with the computertransformed into a magic blackboard.
All these products require a Macintosh, except Geometry, whick.comes in an AppleUp version as wed. Price is $99.95 eachfor the skagis-user version ($79.95 for theUp version of Geometry). A teacher's ver-sion costs $109.95 ($89.95 Up),and* LabPack costs $219.95 ($179.95 Up) perProgram.
