Receive Evolution Packet
Put your name on that bad boy
Many people use antibacterial soaps and cleaners in hopes of staying healthier. When the products are poured down the drain, they ultimately reach lakes, rivers, and streams.
The overexposure to all of those antibacterial products is causing these bodies of water to become populated with drug-resistant bacteria and is negatively affecting these ecosystems.

UNIT 5 - EVOLUTION
SECTION 16.1 – DARWIN’S VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY
• Evolution – change over time; the process by which modern organisms have descended from ancient organisms
• 22 year old naturalist• In late December of 1831, he set sail on the
HMS Beagle from England for a 5-year cruise around the world• This voyage turned out to begin a revolution
in scientific thought that would radically change the way scientists look at life• Wherever the Beagle went, Darwin collected
plant and animal specimens
CHARLES DARWIN – DO NOT COPY
CHARLIE’S JOURNEY
• C.D. once ate an owl. Yummers.• C.D. wanted to be a doctor, but could not stand
the sight of blood• Best Birthday Gift Ever: A Mountain• Darwin married his first cousin• Darwin played Backgammon• Father said, “You will be a disgrace to yourself
and all your family!”• Church of England finally apologizes
FUN FACTS ABOUT CHARLES DARWIN(ACCORDING TO WWW.NEATORAMA.COM )
“Charles Darwin: 200 years from your birth, the Church of England owes you an apology for misunderstanding you and, by getting our first reaction wrong, encouraging others to misunderstand you still. We try to practice the old virtues of 'faith seeking understanding' and hope that makes some amends. But the struggle for your reputation is not over yet, and the problem is not just your religious opponents but those who falsely claim you in support of their own interests. Good religion needs to work constructively with good science – and I dare to suggest that the opposite may be true as well”
Dr. Malcolm Brown – Director of Mission and Public Affairs
DARWIN’S OBSERVATIONS ABOARD THE BEAGLE
• Different, yet ecologically similar, animal species inhabited separated, but ecologically similar, habitats around the globe• Different, yet related, animal species often
occupied different habitats within a local area• Fossils of extinct animals were similar to
living species
FOSSILS•Preserved remains or traces of ancient organisms
THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS
GALÁPAGOS ISLAND DIVERSITY
16.2 – IDEAS THAT SHAPED DARWIN’S THINKING
• Charles Lyell and James Hutton – concluded that Earth is extremely old and that the processes that changed Earth in the past are the same processes that operate the present
LAMARCK• Suggested that organisms
could change during their lifetimes by selectively using or not using various parts of their bodies (Use and Disuse). He also suggested that individuals could pass these acquired traits on to their offspring, enabling change over time.
AUGUST WEISMANN – WRITE THIS ON PAGE 4 AFTER LAMARCK
• Cut the tails of mice for 22 generations and observed the offspring. He found that the acquired characteristics of shortened tails was not inherited.
THOMAS MALTHUS• Reasoned that if the human population
grew unchecked, there wouldn’t be enough living space and food for everyone
ARTIFICIAL SELECTION
• Selective breeding of plants and animals to promote the occurrence of desirable traits in offspring
