Disney on Ice skated into South Africa for the very first time and captivated Jo'burg and Cape Town audiences with its World of Fantasy tour from 26 June to 8 July. I couldn't wait to see what this production had in store for us and was really excited when I arrived at the CTICC, in Cape Town, along with thousands of kids! Once inside I was blown away by the transformation of the main conference centre into a magical world on ice.

This ice spectacular opened with high-speed thrills from the beloved characters of Disney/Pixar CARS as Lightning McQueen, Mater and the rest of the crew, in their larger-than-life costumes, raced across the ice. Each car took 2,000 man hours to build and was outfitted with custom animatronics including blinking eyes and hydraulic lifts that bounce to the beat of the music. So with plenty of incredible special effects and non-stop action, the scene set the tone for the rest of the show. But it was the classic tale of the Little Mermaid and the breathtaking 'Under the Sea' scene that followed that really had me hooked! Nostalgically I found myself silently singing along to the tunes of 'Kiss the Girl' as Arial and prince Eric dazzled with a performance that kept me spellbound. Tinker Bell and the Disney Fairies were up next and once again I was mesmerized by the amount of effort put into their costumes, sets and choreography that ensured not only a great show, but world-class ice skating. They skated so effortlessly that it was easy to forget that they were actually on the ice.

In the second half of the production, the toys from Toy Story 3 came alive on stage with Buzz Lightyear strutting his galactic stuff, Hamm the giant pink piggy bank entertaining us with his antics, Sheriff Woody coming to the rescue and the rest of the gang creating the ultimate Toy Story experience. The spunky Ken also warrants a special mention with his sizzling, yet slightly common outfits and plastic hair. With such a gigantic stage, all the special effects and amount of characters, I’m sure you would be able to watch the show again and notice totally different things the second time round.

Prior to coming to Cape Town, the world-famous production touring family made its way to the Coca-Cola Dome in Johannesburg, Africa's largest indoor venue, where it sold out eight times in one weekend - an achievement never witnessed before. Judging by the number of seats filled in Cape Town and the staggering amount of Disney memorabilia clutched in little hands, it comes as no surprise that plans are already afoot to bring our favourite Disney characters back in 2013. •
