TABLE OF CONTENTS

This will likely be the last thing I ever write for the Ball State Daily News.

After four years of writing, reporting and putting together around 300 different stories, editing other reporters’ work on a nightly basis, leading a staff in the best way I could and making sure this newspaper covered what mattered to its audience, I’m done.

I think we all have experiences in college that de-fine ourselves as students. There are nursing majors that wake up at ridiculous hours in the morning to take clinical shifts every week, education majors that student teach at different schools around Mun-cie and art majors that strive each day to just make people tap into their deepest feelings through some-thing they created.

By the end of our time in college, we all hope to be satisfied with how prepared we are for our career. I know the countless interviews and long nights in the newsroom will pay off for me.

But I still regret a lot about my time at Ball State. My senior year especially showed me that. We

as students were lucky enough to have events like Fun., Life in Color and Dave + Oprah come to Ball State throughout the year. And those are only the highlights.

Sure, I went to a few of those. I even paid $100 to get a ticket to see Oprah when I realized I would hate myself if I didn’t go. But I only made the com-mitment to see and do as much as I could during my senior year, when I didn’t have much time left to enjoy those experiences.

As a member of the Daily News, I often made ex-cuses to avoid going to shows or hanging out with my friends. At the time, it was either doing that or

getting a couple extra hours of sleep. Guess what? I don’t care about any extra hours of

sleep anymore. But I do care about the memories, or lack thereof, I

made at this school. And no matter what year you’re in, you should, too.

It’s obvious that Ball State is trying to build a better identity for itself by hosting such high-profile events in the past few years. Students’ apathetic attitudes have been a problem at Ball State for decades, and the university wants to end it.

If you need an example, just look at the physical changes that have been made recently or will be made soon. Residence halls have been renovated and built, and new athletic facilities are scheduled to follow. The renovations made to North Quad still look beautiful, so I’d expect the same for the ones made to the Applied Technology Building and Teachers College.

Ball State is trying to beautify this campus. It’s try-ing to develop pride in its students, and push them to like going to this school and to get involved.

My parents once told me that college would be the most fun of my entire life. It has certainly lived up to that billing, but I feel like it could have been so much better if I had taken some time to just enjoy it.

As watered down as it may sound after hearing it from your own parents for years, take it from a graduating student: Don’t make the same mistakes I made.

This is our time to get the most out of life. The ad-ministrators at Ball State have given students more ways than ever to make lifelong memories. It’s up to you to make them happen.

In Mardi Gras tradition, men and women who flashed the crowd, despite the nippy 40 degree weather, were thrown beads. DN FILE PHOTO JONATHAN MIKSANEKStudents wait in line for the Ferris wheel during the Late Nite Carnival. The ride closed for a stretch of time due to bad weather. While Late Night Carnival is a spring event, it resembled more of a winter wonderland on April 21. On-and-off showers of freezing rain, snow and ice pellets had rides shutting down throughout the night. However, the fair-food vendors, rides, games and live musical acts brought 5,140 attendees to the event. Senior public relations major and Late Nite Carnival publicity coordinator Kelsey McPheeters said normally 8,000 students attend the carnival.

BOSTON BOMBING

Emergency personnel assist victims at the scene of a bomb blast during the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. Two bombs exploded approximately 10 seconds apart at the finish line of the marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 170. On April 19, Watertown, Mass., authorities captured suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev a day after his brother Tamerlan was shot and killed during an exchange with police. In initial interviews following his capture, Dzhokhar said he and his brother were motivated by extreme Islamist beliefs.MCT PHOTO

Melissa McGrath, an assistant professor of speech language pathology, has a photo taken by her husband at mile 17 of the Boston Marathon on April 15. McGrath was 3 miles away from the finish line when the bombs exploded. The mom of three was running to raise money for The Melanoma Foundation of New England, Inc. McGrath was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in July of 2010 and underwent three surgeries. PHOTO PROVIDED BY MELISSA MCGRATH

Indiana State Excise officers arrested 19 people on 23 charges during Homecoming Weekend. Eighteen minors were arrested on 21 charges, including illegal possession of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol and various traffic violations. The Intensified College Enforcement program to reduce underage drinking launched at the university in February 2012.

Excise Officer Brandon Thomas looks over a selection of fake IDs to explain the key elements police look for to spot a fake. Telling signs include the texture of the card, lack of readability, missing holograms and the sweaty palms of the card holder-nervousness is a give-away. Thomas said that fake IDs have been on the rise, especially in college towns, and he’s not the only one catching on. Chris Johnson, general manager of Muncie Liquors on Riverside Avenue, had a collection of 19 fake IDs he confiscated on a board labeled “Premature Customers.”DN FILE PHOTO COREY OHLENKAMP
