PURPOSE

Facilitate the configuration of the automated programming system’s computer BIOS, adding the Galil device representing the Galil DMC-1040 Pick-and-Place controller, and configuring the resources for the Galil device.

¥ These procedures are valid only for an automated programmer system with Windows XP installed as the operating system.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

The automated programming system computer with Windows XP installed.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Galil DMC-1040 Pick-and-Place controller is an ISA controller that is not Windows plug and play compatible. This means that the computer BIOS and the operating system must be manually configured so that BPWin can detect the presence of the Pick-and-Place controller.

PROCEDURE

Entering the BIOS

To enter the BIOS, press the DEL key during the boot process after powering up the computer. A message at the bottom of the screen will indicate the appropriate time to press the DEL key as shown below.

PnP/PCI Configuration

From the main menu, select the Pnp/PCI Configurations option. Navigate to the operation using the arrow keys then press the Enter key. The modification to this feature will reserve IRQ 10 for the Galil DMC-1040 Pick-and-Place controller and therefore will avoid resource conflicts under Windows XP. Navigate to the Resources Controlled By option and press the Enter key to open the selection window. Select the Manual option then press the Enter key to accept the selection. The option should display Manual as illustrated below.

Navigate to the IRQ Resources option then press the Enter key to open the IRQ Resources options window. Navigate to the option IRQ-10 assigned to and press the Enter key to open the selection window. Select the Legacy ISA option the Enter key to accept the selection. The option should display Legacy ISA as illustrated below.

Saving BIOS Configuration

Press the Esc key to exit to the main menu. From the main menu, navigate to and select the Save and Exit Setup option. Press the Enter key to save the settings. The following prompt will be given. Press the Y key to accept and save the new settings. After the setup exits, the computer will reboot.

Navigate to the IRQ10 option and press the Enter key to open the selection window. Select the Reserved option using the up and down arrow keys then press the Enter key to accept the selection. The IRQ10 option should display Reserved as illustrated below.

Saving BIOS Configuration

Navigate to the Exit tab using the left or right arrow keys. Navigate to and select the Save Changes and Exit option using the up or down arrow keys. Press the Enter key to save the settings. The following prompt will be given. Select the OK button to accept and save the new settings. After the setup exits, the computer will reboot.

DEVICE MANAGER CONFIGURATION

Windows XP

Before continuing with the configuration, install the latest version of BPWin so that the Galil device driver will get installed. This is necessary in order to add the Galil DMC-1040 Pick-and-Place controller as a device into the Device Manager.

Adding the device

Open the Control Panel and double-click the System control to open the System Properties dialog. Select the Hardware tab.

Click on the “Hardware Wizard” button to start the Add Hardware Wizard.

Click on the “Next” button to continue with the wizard asking if the hardware is connected.

Select the “Yes, I have already connected the hardware” option then click on the “Next” button to continue with the wizard automatically or manually installing the hardware.

Go to the end of the list and select the “Add a new hardware device” option then click on the “Next” button to continue. The wizard will display a list of all the devices it is able to install. The Galil DMC-1040 Pick-and-Place controller device will not be found in the given list.

Select the “Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)” option then click on the “Next” button to continue. The wizard will display a list of devices that can be installed on the computer. However, the Galil DMC-1040 Pick-and-Place controller hardware will not be found in the given list.

Select the “Show All Devices” option then click on the “Next” button to continue. This process may take a couple of minutes before the next dialog will be displayed. The next dialog will contain manufacturer names and devices supported by the selected manufacturer.

Using the scroll bar, search for and select the manufacturer name “Galil Motion Control, Inc” from the Manufacturer list. The Model list will be updated with all available models for the selected manufacturer. Select the model named “Galil DMC-10x0 Motion Controller” then click the “Next” button to continue.

The wizard is now ready to install the Galil DMC-1040 Pick-and-Place controller device. Click the “Next” button to start the installation of the Galil DMC-1040 Pick-and-Place controller device. The wizard will attempt to install the Galil DMC-1040 Pick-and-Place controller device but will fail because it cannot determine the correct resource settings to use for the Galil DMC-1040 Pick-and-Place controller device and will display the following dialog.

Resource Configuration

Click on the “View or change resources for this hardware (Advanced) option. This will open the Add Hardware Wizard Properties for the Galil DMC-1040 Pick-and-Place controller device as shown below.

Click on the “Set Configuration Manually” button to open the Resource Settings dialog and modify the resource settings. Note that both the IRQ and the I/O Range settings have questions marks as their settings. To manually modify the resource, double-click on the resource to be modified.

Double-click on the IRQ resource to open the Edit Interrupt Request dialog.

Modify the Value list using the up/down arrows and select the value 10. Click the OK button to return to the Resource Settings dialog then double-click on the I/O Range to open the Edit Input/Output Range dialog.

Modify the Value list using the up/down arrows and select the value 0200 - 0203. Click the OK button to return to the Resource Settings dialog. The resource settings should now show values as shown below.

Click the “Finish” button to complete the installation process.

Click on the “Yes” button to reboot the computer.
