The DIW Graduate Center is the place where academic excellence meets the stimulating environment of Germany’s largest economic think-tank. The GC offers a 4-year program of in-depth training in economics and policy consultancy leading to a PhD from one of Berlin’s universi-ties.
Become an expertGraduates of the DIW Graduate Center are outstandingly qualified in the scientific analysis of economic and social policy issues: they will possess excellent methodological skills, in-depth experience in handling empirical data, and detailed institutional knowledge of the economic and soci-etal structure of Germany and other countries. In addition, they have the crucial ability to disseminate their research results at international congresses and in internationally renowned journals.
DIW BerlinThe Graduate Center is hosted by the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin). DIW Berlin is one of Germany’s leading economic research institutes and offers a unique vantage point for young economic and social re-searchers with an interest in policy consultancy. DIW Berlin provides doctoral students with a wide array of opportuni-ties to communicate with policy makers, enabling them to sharpen their proficiency in listening to the public debate and in presenting their scientific results for discussion with highly experienced research and policy professionals.
Training structureThe training follows a dual training approach: During the first year the GC offers a high-level coursework curriculum. During years 2-4, students are provided on-the-job training in DIW Berlin’s research projects. The academic course-work meets highly demanding international standards. It is conducted in close cooperation with Berlin’s universities, ensuring that the participants receive an intense and broad academic training in economics.
Hands-on experienceIn order to effectively link academic research and real-life policy issues, the PhD education also includes internships at prestigious institutions outside of DIW Berlin. A large number of cooperating institutions from different coun-tries ensures a perfect match. Organizations include the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and German Federal Ministries.
Exchange ideasThe GC also offers numerous activities for further edu-cation and research dissemination, like Masterclasses, research seminars and reading groups. Researchers from across DIW Berlin and many of its partnering institutions participate in these activities, providing great opportunities to get connected and exchange ideas.
Start your researchThe academic research of doctoral students at DIW Gradu-ate Center focuses on theoretical and applied topics within economics and other related social sciences. Both the educa-tion and the research at the Graduate Center have a strong empirical component.
Benefit from our wide networkThe Graduate Center maintains close links with its part-ner universities that award the doctoral degrees inside and outside of Berlin. Many of the university scholars are also members of DIW Berlin and closely connected to the institute’s research work. Co-operations also exist with other PhD programs, international universities for research stays abroad, and with our alumni that hold leading positions in renowned institutions.
ScholarshipsThere are no tuition fees. During the first year each doctoral student receives a scholarship of 1200 euros per month. For years 2-4 there are different funding options: part-time research position, external scholarships or DIW scholar-ships. There is also funding available for conference visits and other academic activities.
Come join the DIW Graduate Center!
If you want to do work that has an impact on the economic world and the policy scene, this is the place to be.
