Hello Division 38! First off, I would like to wish everyone a happy 4th of July! I hope you all spent it with friends and family and had lots of fun! Even though this month has barely started, I have already learned so much! I attended Key Club International Convention from June 29th to July 8th. During the convention I attended workshops that provided me with resources to make our division even stronger! I plan on sharing all that I have learned in this newsletter and at the next Divisional Council Meeting. I encourage you all to attend next year’s ICON which is going to be in Washington D.C. Attending ICON has honestly been one of the best decisions I have made; I met so many great people and Key Clubbers from all over the world and learned so much! Anyways, I hope all of your summers are going great so far! Remember that if you need anything or just want to talk you can always contact me!

international convention 2012 recap

orlando, florida

Days 1 and 2: Disney World After a long, 6 hour flight we headed

over to Disney World’s Magic Kingdom for a day of fun! We also went to

Animal Kingdom and Epcot for the Youth Education Series!

Day 3: Universal On the 3rd day of our tour we

went to Universal Studios (Harry Potter World) to explore! Later that night we went to Epcot to

view a fireworks show!

Day 4: Animal Kingdom On the 4th day we went to Animal Kingdom again to ride Mt. Everest

and go on a Safari ride! In the evening we watched early 4th of July

fireworks at Magic Kingdom!

Day 5: ICON begins! International Convention began

with Meet and Greet, which allowed us to meet Key Clubbers from all

over the world and trade pins with different districts!

Day 6: Caucusing The 2nd day of ICON consisted of opening session, Caucusing,

and the Eliminate dance!

Day 7 and 8: Workshops/Service Fair The next two days of ICON consisted of

workshops like the Hershey’s Track and Field Games, the service fair, and the House of

Delegates where we voted and debated on amendments and candidates for the

International Board.

Day 9 and 10: ICON ends and Disney! ICON ended with a closing session where the

new International Board was announced! Both our districts’ candidates for International Trustee were elected! Then to end the night

there was the 80s Neon dance! The ICON tour ended with a day shopping at Downtown

Disney, playing games at Disney Quest, and a 6 hour flight back home to Washington state.

Key Dates!

July Divisional Council Meeting

When: Saturday, July 21st

Time: 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm

Where: Tumwater Historical Park (777 Simmons Lane SW, Tumwater, WA 98501)

It’s a picnic! I need one person to bring drinks and another to bring

snacks (chips, fruit, etc.)! The rest of you should bring a few dollars to help

pay for the pizzas!

Seattle Ral ly! When: August 13, 2012

Time: 9:00 am-4:00pm

Where: Kent-Meridian High School (10020 SE 256th St. Kent, WA 98030)

Theme: Fun, Sun, and Service!

This mini DCON is a great time to meet Key Clubbers from all over the Seattle Area! It is also an opportunity to receive officer training, take part in workshops, learn ways to improve your home club, make new friends, meet new people, and have fun!

Goals -Acquire $100,000 in corporate sponsorships to bolster attendance at and enhance ICON 2013 through scholarships and sponsors. -Make keyclub.org more navigable and accessible to the general membership -Secure the president or vice president of the U.S. to attend ICON 2013 in D.C. -Partner with Kiwanis in their fight to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus worldwide by educating and involving Key Clubbers

Goals -Monthly communication with governors -Governors’ input on International Board decisions -Regular communication with Circle K and Kiwanis International Boards -Enhance committees -Aid districts-in-formation which don’t have an International liaison -Assistance to chartering clubs with resources -Reach members through social media

Congratulations to River Ridge High School for receiving this month’s Star Award! River Ridge won the Star Award this month for their dedication and hard work in Key Club through the summer so far! They have participated in a highway clean up and have worked closely with the Kiwanis! They have also contacted me regularly, have attended DCMs, and have assisted me when necessary! Good job River Ridge; keep up the great work and service!

Club Spotl ights!

Olympia High School OHS just finished Relay for

Life. They raised over $1,000 to donate to the American Cancer Society! They are

also helping out the Kiwanis at Lakefair by

selling/making roast beef sandwiches!

Capital High School CHS worked together with OHS during Relay for Life!

CHS also has been holding garden work parties to help

the Kiwanis with their gardens! They are also

helping the Kiwanis with roast beef sales and

Lakefair!

District Projects and Sponsors!

The Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Program is our district’s official supported project! This program raises money to help fund cancer research and

supports the Kiwanis Doernbecher Children’s Cancer Program in Portland, OR. Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Program in Seattle, WA and the Kiwanis Children’s Cancer Program in British Columbia and the

Yukon. Through this, we can help raise awareness of cancer and fight to find a cure!

Hershey’s Track and Field Games is Key Club’s new sponsor for this year! It is the largest youth sports program in the United States and Canada! It’s an event that teaches kids that real victory is beating

yourself, not others; the real victory is doing what they thought wasn’t possible and having fun! You can volunteer at an event or

even host one in your community!

With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease

steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects (hidden word: eliminate) of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful

convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. It only takes $1.80 to vaccinate three people!
