The Eliminate Box

During the introduction of the 2012-2013 District Board

Oh, Hello There!

Dear Kiwanis Committee Members, Advisors, New Jersey District Board of Trustees, and Key Clubbers, My name is Mei Chen, and I am currently a junior in Piscataway High School. I am extremely honored to serve as your Lieutenant Governor of Division 11 for the 2012-2013 service year. I first heard of Key Club during a school assembly and immediately grew interested in becoming a member. However it was not until sophomore year that I truly understood what Key Club does for others, especially for the less fortunate. During one of the Fall Regional Training Conferences that I attended, I was moved by the video clips and workshops that were put together by the District Board. During the Conference, I also learned about Key Leader and was determined to go. While attending Key Leader, I gained a new perspective on leadership, and this motivated me to take the lead and to inspire others to contribute to their community, just like I was. Aside from Key Club, I am also an active member in Chinese Club as well as FBLA. I enjoy being around others. Seeing happy faces gives me the feeling of accomplishment, and so I enjoy making people smile. Even though a smile may seem insignificant, it can impact the way a person goes through his or her day, and can inspire them to improve the days of others as well. When I feel sad or down, I would simply remind myself of all the people and things that I am grateful for in my life. This motivates me to give back to the community and help others who may not have as much as I do. Every little thing that I do may be able to change the life of others, as I have learned with the Eliminate Project. I understand that being the Lieutenant Governor comes along with great responsibilities, and I am willing to accept this challenge, and excel at my position. For the 2012-2013 service year, I wish to accomplish the following goals:

Build at as many new clubs as possible

Keep the clubs strong

Keep in contact with Kiwanis Committee Members, Advisors, New Jersey District Board, and Key Club Officers

Have all dues send in on time

Train all the officers 100% before Fall Rally

Set up fun events that will involve not only Key Clubbers but also members in the K-family 2011-2012 has been a great service year, and we can make 2012-2013 even better. I am excited for this amazing year to come, so let us make every second count. Yours in Caring and Service,

Mei Chen

At the beginning of 2011-2012 Service Year, New Jersey Key Club had set a goal of raising $79,180.38 for the Eliminate Project.

By the end of 2011-2012 Service Year, New Jersey Key Club had

raised over $97,000.

What is the The Eliminate Project?

With The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF have joined forces to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This deadly disease steals the lives of nearly 60,000 innocent babies and a significant number of women each year. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, more than 100 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. This requires vaccines, syringes, safe storage, transportation, thousands of skilled staff and more. It will take US$110 million — and the dedicated work of UNICEF and every member of the Kiwanis family. Kiwanis and UNICEF joined forces to tackle iodine deficiency disorders, achieving one of the most significant public health successes of the 20th century. Now, they are eliminating MNT from the face of the Earth. And in doing so, the project will reach the poorest, most neglected mothers and babies with additional lifesaving health care. The end of this one disease means the beginning of better health for so many families.
