A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS

HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

    The Epiphany of the Lord

    January 3, 2016

“All kings shall pay him homage, all nations shall serve him. For he shall rescue the poor man when he cries out,

and the afflicted when he has no one to help him. He shall have pity for the lowly and the poor; the lives of the

    poor he shall save.”

We are so familiar with the persons of the scripture today, a devious king, star-gazing pilgrims, a baby and His

mother. We know the gifts, the beckoning star, and the informative dream. We proclaim Jesus as the savior of all

    humankind.

As we reflect upon the words of the psalm we discover the mission of the Christ and hear the echo of the mission

of Pope Francis. In his teaching in the Joy of the Gospel and in proclaiming the jubilee year of mercy, we are

caught up with a special concern for those in great need. As the Holy Father and psalmist speak of the poor, we

not only consider the economically downtrodden, but those who are poor because they lack hope and direction,

who are not able to find a place for Christ in their lives.

As the magi went seeking and discovered the One they sought, may we begin this new year with a concern for

those in need and be the source of strength and support for them.

    Pope Francis on Vocations:

Vocations come from Communities: “A vocation is a fruit that ripens in a well cultivated field of mu-

tual love that becomes mutual service, in the context of an authentic ecclesial life. No vocation is

born of itself or lives for itself. A vocation flows from the heart of God and blossoms in the good soil of

faithful people, in the experience of fraternal love.”

Listen and be brave! “Have you sometimes heard the voice of the Lord through a desire, restless-

ness, inviting you to follow him more closely? Have you had any desire to be apostles of Jesus? Ask

Jesus what he wants from you and be brave?

of community-based preventive health screenings, will host their affordable, non-invasive and painless

health screenings on 2/2/2016. Five screenings will be offered that scan for potential health problems

related to: blocked arteries which is a leading cause of stroke; abdominal aortic aneurysms which can

    lead to a ruptured aorta; hardening of the arteries in the legs which is a strong predictor of heart disease;

atrial fibrillation or irregular heart beat which is closely tied to stroke risk; and a bone density screening,

for men and women, used to assess the risk of osteoporosis. Register for a Wellness Package which in-

cludes 4 vascular tests and osteoporosis screening from $149 ($139 with our member discount). All five
