Industry News APALRC Celebrates 14th Anniversary at May 22 Gala The Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center will be celebrating its 14 th anniversary on May 22, 2012 at the Arts Club of Washington, located at 2017 I Street, N.W. in Washington, D.C. We invite you to join us to celebrate this milestone and continue to support our work by sponsoring the event. Founded in 1998 by the Asian American lawyers and law students in the DC area, the APALRC seeks to advance the legal and civil rights of low-income Asian Americans with limited English proficiency in Metro-DC through community legal education, direct legal services and systemic advocacy. In 2011, APALRC provided legal assistance in 364 legal matters to residents of Metro-DC with a GWAC Inaugural Golf Outing on June 1, 2012 On Friday, June 1, GWAC will sponsor its Inaugural Golf Outing at the Country Club at Woodmore in Mitchellville, MD. The afternoon event will feature a nine-hole round for experienced golfers, a golf clinic for novices, and a dinner reception. In addition to provid- ing an opportunity to hit the links or learn the game, this event is also a fundraiser for GWAC programs that are not supported by funds raised at our Annual Auction., including monthly programming at no charge in order to serve all interested attorneys, regardless of ability to pay. In celebration of Law Day, May 1st, the DC Lawyer Chapter of ACS has onceagain partnered with DC Public and Charter Schools in order to place volun-teer attorneys and law students in elementary, middle, and high schools. Just The Beginning Hosts Summer Legal Institute at GW June 18-22

Just the Beginning Foundation will host a free Summer Legal Institute at GWU LawSchool June 18-22, 2012 for high school students. Last summer the SLI studentsvisited the United States Supreme Court and met with Justice Elena Kagen and visit-ed Judge Walton at DC District Court. For more information, and to apply, click here.

Constitution in the Classroom Needs Volunteers

Get to Know the Posse (Foundation)

The Posse Foundation will hold a “Get to Know Posse” briefing for the D.C. legal

community on Tuesday, May 8 from 6-7 p.m. at the offices of Kirkland & Ellis LLP

at 14th and G, NW. The Posse Foundation identifies, recruits, and trains

incredible young leaders from urban public high schools and sends them in

Posses to top colleges and universities across the country. Posse D.C. works with

60 new Scholars each year-many of whom might have been overlooked by the

traditional college selection processes and a number of whom are the first in their

family to attend college. Each Scholar receives a four-year, full-tuition leadership

scholarship from one of the foundation’s partner universities. The May 8th event

will provide an overview of Posse and the opportunities to partner with the

organization through volunteer support, internships and charitable giving. The

hosts believe that building a vibrant support network among legal organizations

and the Posse scholars will advance the cause of diversity in our venerable

profession while providing fun and rewarding opportunities for law firms and

lawyers at all seniority levels. The Co-Chairs for the event are William Cook,

WBA Law Day Dinner and Awards Saturday, May 5

The Washington Bar Association will host its Annual Law Day Dinner on Saturday,

May 5 at the J.W. Marriott. Cocktails served at 6:30pm with dinner following at

7:30pm. The theme of this year’s dinner is Houstonian Jurisprudence: A Global Per-

spective. The honorary co-chairs for this year’s event are Grace Speights, Managing

Partner, Morgan Lewis & Bockius, LLP and Bancroft Gordon, Senior Counsel and Cor-

porate Secretary, Marriott International. The WBA’s highest honor, the Charles Hamil-

DPN to Host May 7 Reception for Firestone and Yamate

On May 7th, the DPN is pleased to host Marc Firestone, SVP and General

Counsel, Kraft Foods, and Sandra Yamate, CEO of the Institute for Inclusion in

the Legal Profession. The IILP is a new, exciting and innovative organization

comprised of leading corporations and law firms that have combined their re-

sources to take the cause of promoting diversity in the legal profession to the

next level. Marc and Sandra will discuss the mission of the IILP and its ground-

breaking study, “The Business Case for Diversity: Reality or Wishful Think-

ing.” The presentation and discussion promises to be illuminating and provoca-

As of April 2, Maurice Watson is the new Chairman of

GWAC of Women Lawyers Division of NBA to Host Reception Honoring Judges

The Greater Washington Area Chapter of the Women Lawyers Division of the Na-

tional Bar Association invites you to an evening reception honoring the Women

Judges of the District of Columbia at 6:00 p.m. on April 24 at the offices of Miller &

Three Nominated to Replace Retiring Judge Zinora Mitchell-Rankin

Judge Mitchell-Rankin retired Feb. 29, and sixteen attorneys and judges applied to take her

Hats off to our own Ben Wilson, who has been elected to the Board of Trustees

D. Simone Williams has been named General Counsel

at Gulf Coast Funds Management, LLC. Prior to joining

GCFM joining GCFM, Ms. Williams worked as an Asso-

ciate for a prestigious international law firm in Toronto,

Canada. Later she transferred to the headquarters of

the firm’s Global Mobility Group in Washington, DC,

where she worked on a variety of Global Migration and

our Exempt Organizations practice group. The ideal applicant will have experience

working with tax-exempt organizations in either a law firm or government setting.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) would like to continue receiving

position will assist a Litigation Group Chief in managing a group of 20 to 30 line

enforcement lawyers. The ideal candidate will have substantial litigation experience,
