Stuart explains that after about 25 minutes of rescue efforts, one of the workers on site realised that his co-worker was unaccounted for. “The guys lifted the pool cover and pulled him out of the water.” According to an ER24 spokesperson, Vanes- sa Jackson, the worker who landed at the bot- tom of the pool could have drowned as he was pinned down by the bricks on top of him. “The two men died at the scene and nothing more could be done to save their lives,” says Jackson. She added that the two surviving workers were airlifted about two hours later to Medi- clinic Vergelegen and Mediclinic Cape Gate respectively. Jackson confirms that both the surviving workers sustained various broken bones, but are fully con- scious and in a stable condi- tion. Morris is survived by his wife and children. He is de- scribed by Stuart as a great man. “He was very religious and always doing good in the community. “We’ve been living in this house for six years, but are now debating whether we should move or not. Every time I go out there, I will be remind- ed of what happened,” says Stuart. Morris’ daughter Maxine van Zyl posted the following message on Facebook on Monday 5 November: It’s so hard losing your dad. I wish I could have said goodbye and see him 1 last time. It hurts knowing I last saw him last night and never thought that good night kiss would be the last. I’m going to miss his corny jokes that made me laugh, his off toned singing and my dad! STRAND: SAFER ANDCLEANER

    Beaches ready for summer

    NIKITA SYLVESTER

    A

s the festive season creeps closer so

    do thesummerdayswhichevident-

    lymeanmore visitors to themuch-

    loved Strand beach.

Ward 83 councillor, Dave Venter assured

    residents that therearealreadyplansinplace

to ensure that Strand beach will be safer and

cleaner for the high season rush.

    Additional temporary staff have already

been assigned to beach cleaning for the sea-

son, which is from the beginning of Novem-

ber until after Easter next year.

The number of cleanerswill also increase

    after the schools commenceagain inJanuary

    2013, explains Venter.

He says that the City of Cape Towns safety

and security and law enforcement depart-

    mentshaveplans inplace to increasevisibili-

ty along all beach areas in the Helderberg,

    including Strand beach.

    Lifeguardsarealreadyondutyoverweek-

ends and during school holidays lifeguards

will be on duty every day, states Venter.

He also assured that during the Christmas

    and New Year period a

    number of temporary ablu-

tion facilities will, as in prior

    years, be placed along the

    beach front area.

    Venter also mentioned that

he is currently working on a

    long-term project to have the

    bus shelters on the beach

    front converted into ablution

    facilities.

    I specifically requested

    that the shelters be converted

because no one can use them

    at present.

    Vagrants have invaded

    them, they defecate and uri-

nate in the shelters and they

    are a mess.

    The officials accepted my

    suggestions and by convert-

ing these shelters, the number of these facili-

    ties along thebeach frontwill increasewhich

    is long overdue, says Venter.

    Despitetheongoingbattleoverparkingtar-

iffs, Venter explains that there will be no dif-

ference in parking tariffs in Beach Road,

Strand during this time as there is only one

    tariff scale all year round.

    Theparkingtariffscalewhichwillbe appli-

cable during the holiday seasonwill be R1,50

for 15 minutes, R3 for 30 minutes and R6 for

    an hour.

Cop kills 3 familymembers and himself

shot himself after killing three fami-

    ly members on Sunday.

    According to provincial police

    spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel

    Andr Traut, Sergeant Max Gwanya

    STERILISATIONUNIT: FIRST FOR CAPE

    Newmobileveterinary service

    JAMEY THOMAS

    T

he Western Capes first mobile ani-

mal sterilisation unit (Masu) was re-

cently launched andwill be in opera-

tion in Sir Lowrys Pass Village from 5

    9 November.

    Launchedby theAnimalRescueOrganisa-

tion (ARO) early in September Masu a cus-

tom built seven metre long trailer allows

the organisation to travel to far-reaching

communities in dire need of veterinary serv-

    ices.

According to Jessica Perrins, ARO com-

munications assistant, the concept of Masu

    hasbeentopicalamongstvariousanimalwel-

    fare organisations for years.

With the unit finally being realised, steri-

lisations and other animal welfare services

in line with the SAVeterinary Council regu-

lations can be carried out, says Perrins.

The unit is fully equipped with all neces-

sary veterinary and medicine storage facili-

    ties, including an operating theatre.

Although Masu aims to render a quality

service on the road, it also plays an instru-

mental role in assisting various animal wel-

fare organisations in trimming down the

    numberof unwantedpets inunderprivileged

    communities.

    According toPerrins,Masuhassince its in-

ception completed four very successful steri-

lisation campaigns, and they are now work-

ing on the success of the fifth in Sir Lowrys

    Pass Village.

During our trial and error campaign

which was held on Mandela Day, Masu ex-

ceeded its aim of sterilising 67 animals by an

    additional15.Atourcurrent locationweplan

to sterilise between 25 and 30 animals a day,

which will hopefully allow us to sterilise 125

by the end of the week, said Perrins, who

claimsMasu has also been involved in a gov-

    ernment funded, mass sterilisation pilot

project in Kayamandi which saw over 1 100

    animals sterilised, vaccinated and micro-

chipped within one breeding cycle (6

    months).

Masu relies greatly on the contributions

and donations which go solely towards costs

incurred to render services and upkeep. A

four-day trip could cost up to R20 000.

    mans aangeval is.

Opperman se FordCourier-bakkie is ook in

    die voorval geroof.

Volgens Opperman, wat tans n deeltydse

    oorsienerby nbouprojek is, hethyensy seun

in Hoofweg gaan trek. Die twee is daarna on-

Gelukkig het my bril afgeval, anders sou

getrap het, het hulle aanhoudend geskree,

The keys, the f@#* money, maar ek het die

geld, wat in my broeksak was, vasgel. Die

bakkie se sleutels was in sy agtersak en het

uitgeval. Opperman vertel sy vrou het uit die

    gang aanhoudend geskree, polisie, polisie,

    kom help.

ek haar geskree steeds hoor. Ek het gevrees

dat my seun dalk geskiet is. Hy het weer ge-

    According toGordonsBaycommunication

    year-oldman fromGordonsBaywasarrested

on Monday 5 November in connection with

the burglary. As soon as the suspect is

charged, he will appear in the Strand Magis-

    tratesCourtonchargesofhousebreakingand

    theft, says Beukes.

Evans, manager of the AWS, explains that

on Thursday morning (25 October) at around

07:30 she received a call from one of her em-

ployees, Eugenie McQueen, who had just ar-

rived for work, informing her of a burglary

    at their offices.

Upon her arrival, McQueen had found the

    traumatisedsecurityguard,LearnmoreMun-

dawu, who was on duty that evening, hiding

    in the building.

Evans says that the incident took place at

    around 04:00 onThursday,when anunknown

    numberofsuspectsbrokeintotheAWSoffices

    in Gordons Bay.

It seems they gained entry by cutting

through the burglar bars and opening a win-

dow after they cut the electrical fence sur-

    rounding the premises.

Mundawu, who was patrolling inside the

building at the time, told her that one of the

    they would shoot him.

He says he could not see the suspects faces

or tell how many there were because he was

covering himself the entire time. He explains

that because the suspects left with his cell-

phone, he was unable to contact anyone for

help, so he waited in the building until some-

    one arrived later that morning.

Evans says the suspects completely ran-

sacked the place and stole a number of valua-

ble items, such as two computer monitors,

    boxes,screensandaprinteraswellasthekeys

to the AWS vehicles and spare keys. Other

items the suspects also made off with include

a kodak camera, two tea sets, a dip tin, frozen

goods from the freezer, a memory stick and

    atinwithmoneytheemployeeshavecollected

    for their Christmas party.

They stripped the spotlights off the front

of the building and even ripped the light from

    vendingmachine, she says. Thankfully the

two computers that were taken, were recov-

ered and they didn't get into the big safe. I am

also really grateful that they didnt take any

    of the animals medication.

Alongwith the police, Vetus Schola also ar-

rived at the scene and offered to install a bur-

glar alarm and monitoring system free of

charge as part of their community work.

Huge thanks to SAPS, Vetus Schola, the

    Bruno, a 15-year-old males

face was cut open when he

    jumped through a glass slid-

ing door in an attempt to es-

    cape the sound of exploding

    firecrackers.

    His owner, Tracey Nortje of

Strand says she and her hus-

band had tried to let Bruno in-

to the house earlier as a safety

    precaution. He was, however,

too agitated by the sound of

    fireworks being discharged

    and would not come in.

    Wecouldhear firecrackers

    throughout the evening, but it

was a far-off, dull sound, re-

    calls Nortje.

She says at about 21:30 the sound of fire-

crackers became louder. She heard Bruno

bumping frantically against the sliding door.

    She remembers shouting, Bruno, wait,

wait, to their pet as shewent to open thedoor

    to let him in.

A loud explosive thud followed, causing the

thought I would never be able to stop it.We

the wound like a fountain, Nortje says.

She phoned a Strand veternarian who ad-

She says once inside Bruno settled down

while the sound of firecrackers could still be

    heard throughout the night

On Tuesday morning the veterinarian col-

lected Bruno and took him to the surgery

    where he received eight stitches.

The City of Cape Town has this year de-

clared Macassar Beach the only designated

area for fireworks displays in theHelderberg.

In a press statement last week Theo

Layne, spokesperson for the Citys Fire and

Rescue Services, assured residents that law

enforcement officers will be on duty in resi-

dential areas where it is illegal to discharge

    fireworks. However, Helderberg Animal

Welfare Society manager, Julia Evans says

she had been inundated with phone calls

    fromMacassar residents reporting animals

running astray. She added that the rest of

theHelderberg had been quieter than previ-

ous years, with only a few stray dogs being

brought to the centre and a few reported

    missing by their owners.

Bruno sustained a deep cut to the right side of his face

    HELDERZICHT: SUPPLY INTERRUPTED

    Burstwaterpipes causedamage

    NIKITA SYLVESTER

    W

    ith the ongoing con-

    struction work on the

    water pipes in Helder-

    zicht, Somerset West some resi-

dents are now starting to lose

    their patience with pipe bursts.

According to a Dunn Street resi-

dent the water supply in that street

was interrupted for nearly an en-

    tire weekend (26 28 October).

Yes, the pipes are now being re-

placed, but this past weekend we

had no water from Friday (26 Octo-

ber) at about 09:00 until 23:15. Itwas

    offagainonSaturdayandonlywent

    on again on Sunday afternoon.

The City of Cape Towns water

    and sanitation department direc-

    tor, Philemon Mashoko said the

    resident reported the burst pipe

    which occurred that weekend and

    confirmed that officials repaired it

    the following Tuesday morning.

    Whenwork is done on thewater

    supplynetwork, it is inevitable that

the supply will be interrupted. If it

    is plannedmaintenance, the affect-

    ed residents are advised before-

    The resident furthermore com-

    plainedabout theunsightly state in

    which the contractors leave the

    properties once they have worked

there. She also claims that the wa-

    take responsibility and do follow-

    doing here, she says.

    Mashoko responded in saying

that Helderzicht is a low-lying area

next to theGeel Sloot and thewater

table in this area is high.

    Any additional water caused by

leaks, as well as rain, will make an

    already bad situation worse, ex-

    surface. The City will monitor

    whilst the contractor finishes the

job and arrange for an inspection

to ensure that there are no other

He adds that in all instances the

both in terms of the area affected

and the duration of the interrup-

claimed he was attacked in the

    next court appearance only in

    Mayne appeared in court last

week Friday on charges of de-

feating the ends of justice. The

    case was postponed until 29

    March 2013 for further investi-

    This follows after mass hyste-

    ria prevailed in the Helderberg

    when amessage claiming aman

had been brutally stabbed at the

    mall, spread rapidly among var-

    ious networks on Tuesday 12

    June.

    The malls security footage

shows a mans arm moving in a

body at 19:08. After a few min-

utes, he struggles to get up and

then falls over the railing near

    the circle at the underground

    toilet serves an important function

due to the lack of sufficient ablution

    facilities along this beach front.

    During the previous summer sea-

son the citys sport, recreation and

    amenities department received very

    positive comments from both visi-

tors and residents about this facili-

had complaints indicating that it is

    not working.

    Thanks,Rola ToyotaMotors

My husband and I would like to

make use of this opportunity to

    thank Brenda, Ellroy, Ian and

    Maree from Rola Toyota Motors

    Somerset West/Strand, for mak-

ing our buying experience one of

    the best ever!

    We received royal treatment

    A million thank-yous once

    Well definitely be coming back

    After destroying the offices the

    robbers stole computers, a camera,

tea sets, frozen food and money the

staff had been collecting for their

    Christmas party.

To top it all, the organisation is

still in critical need of dog and cat

food to feed the growing numbers of

dogs and cats at the kennels.

If youre able to help, please drop

off food at 42 Reitz Street, Somerset

West or at the kennels at Mansfield

There is, however, also some good

news for all pets in the Helderberg:

    a mobile animal sterilisation unit

    (Masu),was launchedbytheAnimal

    this week.

This unit is in the form of a seven

metre long trailer and is fully

    equipped with all veterinary needs,

    including a fully functional operat-

    ing theatre.

    This custom-built trailer will al-

The mobile unit was launched in

    M

    ovember is literal-

    ly changing the

    face of mens

    health around the globe.

    The changed face comes

with the addition of a mous-

    tache grown during the

    month of November, but its

not just about the ability to

produce a fine crop of facial

    hair on the upper lip.

    Movember is all about rais-

    ing awareness around the of-

    ten ignored issues of mens

    cancers.

    Helderberg Hospice is sup-

    porting this campaign by

    hosting a thought-provoking

    multi-media art exhibition,

    entitled End/Begin, which

    documents the journey taken

    after a diagnosis of prostate

    cancer. Various components

    make up the different stages

    of this journeyandwhilepain

    and suffering are an integral

part of the story, it is also a

passage of hope and one that

    is permeated with love and

    care.

    Artist Elna Bischoff has

    The exhibition opens on

    GERALD IS BACK: After three

months of a well earned rest, Gerald

but he has made a full recovery with

a busy schedule ahead of him for the

next year. Some of the big shows in-

    More angels needed ineducation

    T

    he second annual Media24

    Rachels Angels lecture was re-

    cently held at Groenberg Second-

    ary School in Grabouw.

The Rachels Angels Trust, a joint

project between Media 24 and Stellen-

bosch University, was founded in 2007. It

aims to contribute towards building ex-

cellence in high school education in the

    Western Cape and currently includes

    mentorship programmes between grade

11 pupils from 20 disadvantaged schools

and second- and third-year students from

    Stellenbosch University.

Minister in the Presidency and chair-

person of the National Planning Commis-

sion (NPC), Trevor Manuel was the key-

    note speaker.

    MinisterManuel outlined theNPCsVi-

    sion2030 Improving thequality of educa-

    tion in South Africa.

The role of teachers, with continued

    evaluation, cameunder the spotlight.We

    needtoensurethatteachersfeelaccounta-

    ble to principals, said Manuel.

He said principals need to be appointed

on competency and skills and that it is a

job requiring skills to manage 1 200 pu-

    pils.

The role of oversight and responsibility

    ofVision2030educationpolicywasaques-

    tionmost asked.MinisterManuel empha-

sised that all South African citizens have

a responsibility in ensuring the positive

    futureof educationover thenext 18years.

    Youcannot pass sole responsibility on

to government; everyone has to get in-

volved, including the pupils here tonight,

who will be the countrys leaders in 18

years time. It is a role that government,

    educators, civil society and businesses

    have to be involved in.

    Commenting on the Rachels Angels

Trust, Minister Manuel said there needs

    tobemoreangelscomingforwardtoim-

    plement programmes to improve the

quality of education and mentor pupils,

some of whom are the first generation to

completematric and go on to further edu-

    cation.

Above, from left, are representatives of the Rachels An-

gels Trust with Minister Trevor Manuel (fourth from left).

They are Luzelle Lestrade, deputy chairperson Dr Michael

Le Cordeur, chairperson, Prof Rachel Jafta, Heindrich

    Wyngaard and Rolene Liebenberg.

    DOCTORATE IN

    PHD: Former Lochn-

    erhof Primary School

    teacher Benita (Van

    Zyl) McLachlan, was

    recently awarded a

    doctorate in Philoso-

    phy (PhD) in Educa-

    tional Studies at the

    Anglia Ruskin Uni-

versity in England, where she and her

husband have been living since the

nineties. On completion of her diploma

in teaching at OKP, she was appointed

at Lochnerhof Primary School in 1982

in Strand. Her most recent study fo-

cused on disability education within the

    lifelong learning sector in England.

SAVE OUR SEAS: Paul Millar from

the Save our Seas Foundation re-

    cently gave presentations on shark

    research and conservation to grade

4 to 7 pupils of Raithby Primary

    School. The foundation also donated

books to the school. The pupils en-

    joyed the presentation and were

shocked when Millar told them that

about 100 million sharks are annu-

    ally slaughtered, mostly for their

fins. The school wishes to express

their gratitude to Millar and the

Save our Seas Foundation for their

work. Here Paul Millar and school

    principal, Attie Olivier, goes through

    one of the donated books.

ART FOR PEACE: The Strand Lions Club

entered four art works from Somerset West

Primary pupils into the annual Lions Inter-

national Peace Poster Contest themed Im-

agine peace. Jin-Ree Lee won first place

and Ha-Eun Park took third place in the

first round of the competition. With them in

    he former Rialto Cinema in

    transformed into 97 On

    Strand was recently launched

    and has four show apartments

    ready for viewing.

    Local businessmen Andr du

    Plessis and Arjan Ockhuisen took

    on the apartment building, which

    hadbeenstalled for twoyears,when

    semi-completeandhaveupgraded it

    significantly.

    Raoul Barenblatt, former owner

of the Rialto Cinema outlined the

history of the location, where the

    originalmovie housewas owned by

his father from 1935 but burnt down

    early one Saturday morning (after

a showing of Hans Die Skipper) in

1952, to be rebuilt withmodern con-

    versions in 1980.

The Rialto may no longer exist,

but now a new, modern, beautiful

building is in its place, and I con-

gratulate Arjan and Andr on this

lovely building, and wish them lots

of luck for the future, which they

    certainlydeserve, saysBarenblatt.

    A commemorative sculpture of a

    movie camera was unveiled, which

now graces the entrance area of 97

    On Strand.

With sterling views, set in the

    heart of the Strand promenade,

    close to restaurants and amenities,

interest in these apartments as well

as the commercial element on the

ground floor is strong. Four of the

five shops on the ground floor have

ing place on the final one, and four

of a movie camera at the unveiling of 97 On Strand.

    Are you aman or amouse?

To catch a mouse you need a

    mouse trap. The most essen-

tial part of the mouse trap is

the cheese, which is used to

    lure the unsuspecting little

    fellow to his demise.

    In financial services

    thereare similar traps,

    which alsomake use of

    cheese to lure unsus-

    pecting consumers to

    their financial demise.

    Somehow I feel sorrier

    for themice, but that is

    a topic on its own.

    Thisweeklets lookat

    two financial traps set

    by the banks andmany

    retailers.

    Trap 1: The credit

    card trap. A favourite

    trap used by all the

    banks, many retailers

    and even airlines. The unsus-

    pecting consumer is enticed into

applying for a credit card by the

    cheese, which comes in many

    differenttasty flavoursa fewof

    which listed below:

    ) points exchanged for con-

    sumer goods,

    )miles exchange for travel

    tickets,

    ) cashrefundsanddiscounted

    purchases,

) free benefits e.g. travel in-

    surance,

    ) status appeal (gold, plati-

    num etc),

) free credit for up to 60 days,

    )monthly prize draws.

    The death blow is delivered

just as quickly and brutally as

    the mouse trap. Consumers are

    encouraged to spend using their

credit cards as often as possible

    with only a minimum payment

    due at month end.

    Unbeknown to the unsuspect-

ing consumer, should he elect to

    pay only the minimum amount,

he is charged interest on full

    amount due at exorbitant inter-

    est rates.

    Do you remember the days

    when the winning sportsman re-

    ceived anoversized cheque? I no-

tice this has been replaced by an

    oversized credit card.

    Trap 2: The debt

    consolidation trap.

    Many astute con-

    sumers avoid the

    credit card trap on-

    ly to be caught by

    trap 2.

    The cheese is

    usually a combina-

    tion of private

    banking facilities

    and sound advice

    of consolidating

    debt at a lower in-

    terest rate usually

    equivalent to the

    bond rate.

    The death blow

is skilfully hidden in the repay-

    ment structure. The unsuspect-

    ing consumers loan repayment

term is now linked to his bond

term. The longer the term of a

loan the lower the monthly pay-

ment, which is surely an added

    benefit?Wrong!Byextendingthe

    repayment termyoumay be able

    toaffordalittlemore,butyouend

    up paying much more interest.

In a variation of trap 2 the

    banks are now offering home-

buyers 30 year bonds versus the

    traditional 20 year bond. This

    lowers repayments thus making

the purchase of a home more af-

fordable, but results in the con-

    sumer paying much more inter-

est over the term of the bond.

Are you a man or a mouse? I

think I would prefer to be a hun-

    grymousethenagreedyconsum-

er; not that it really matters as

    bothwill endupgetting the chop.
