PlayoffsEach Play Matters Each Play Counts

"It's not how you start the season, it's how you finish. If you wind up helping the team make the playoffthat's what you play for. You don't play to put up your numbers, but to try to get a chance to make it to

    the Superbowl.Albert Pujols

    District 29 Family,

Are you ready for some football? It is the month of February. Super Bowl day reminds me of how mucToastmasters has in common with sports. Our almost 3000-strong, dedicated District 29 team is in theThird Quarter of the game the 2015-2016 Toastmasters game. A few years back, I had no idea howthe sport of football was played, let alone what the term playoff meant. Watching the athletes play withthe mentality of We not Me,and with Determinationand Passion to achieve their Personal Bestto thelast nail-biter second is just the nature of sports. Players strive to help the team achieve scores for theteams sake. That is very inspiring. And yes, Toastmasters is just like a sport and we should all play fothe team.

The plays made by each of us count. Club officers and District leaders are integral to our teamAll officers Matter and all actions Count. These are exciting times in District 29. Each play madefrom July 1, 2015 is making our District score board light up. It is looking very Good.

Whether the action was an icebreaker or a speech from an advanced manual; whether the role wasToastmaster of the Day, timer or grammarian each role matters. A commitment to be a leader at theclub, Area, Division, or District level matters. Each individual goal each flutter -has made and is maing a difference. We have been celebrating individual accomplishments with smiles such you know astheTalk of the District, ribbons, and awards.

THANK YOU for all you have done and continue to do. Moving forward, we will continue to play together and give our personal best to and for the team. The time to celebrate the collective efforts of ourdynamic District 29 Toastmasters team is approaching. If you see someone sitting on the bench, whether it is a guest, a new member, or a long-term veteran, please encourage them by showing how

the sport is played. Give them the chance to fly and be prepared to be amazed. When you give, youalso receive in return!

The quote below defines our District 29 team of almost 3000 strong--"This is definitely a playoff team. There's no question about that. It's just a matter of how much we want it.Peter Bondra

Seahawks' captain, Russell Wilson commented on Super Bowl in Feb. 2014: 'Why not us? And theunderdog team went on to win Superbowl Trophy. Yes, I was inspired and used those 3 simple wordsto rally and as a team we worked hard and ended up making history by helping the District achieveSelect Distinguished for the very first time. I am sure, Together Wecan do it again and even better.

During the August 2016 Toastmasters International Convention, 92 Toastmasters Districts from aroundthe World will gather in our geography. Team 29 MVP's (most valuable players) -Let's play ball withall of our might and plan to be the District with the Most. Lets show the world that butterflies are notonly beautiful and graceful, but they can play ball as well.

    Best Practices:

Reflections on the Importance of Hosting Open Houses

    Pragmatics Toastmasters Club Celebrates Fifth

    Anniversary!

The Pragmatics Toastmasters Club meets once a month at noon at Prag-

matics headquarters in Reston, Virginia. On December 11, the club cele-

brated its fifth anniversary by hosting an Open House. Door prizes were

part of the celebration, and two lucky guests won free memberships. At-

tendees enjoyed a catered lunch in a collegial setting and were enter-

tained and educated by guest speakers: District 29 Director, Lovely Lall,

who was a member of the club when it began, and Sean Cohan, Vice

President of the Technology Solutions Group, who shared his experienc-

es as a Toastmaster from nearly 25 years ago.

During the Open House, we wanted to try something new and offer our

members and guests the chance to win free prizes. Our Secretary, Kyra,

had everyone write their name on a piece of paper to be drawn for the prizes. Two of our biggest give -a-ways were two free

memberships to guests looking to join our club. It was an all -around success because we had three individuals win gift cards

and two guests win free memberships. This Open House was extra special because one of our own, Rey Forrest, receive a

surprise plaque for her outstanding and dedicated service throughout the years. Rey was a part of the PTC when there were

only four members. She has played a significant role in PTCs success.

At the request of VPE Rey Forrest, Kyra Byron, Secretary/Treasurer, assumed the role of Chairperson for the Open House.

Although this was a new and challenging role, Kyra eagerly identified all aspects required for its success and made the nec-

essary assignments. The fact that she would receive CL credit also served as incentive to chair the event!

When I first joined Toastmasters, I never thought I would have the opportunity to Chair an Open House. I remember the day

Rey asked me to Chair our next Open House. I was nervous and excited all at the same time. I was incredibly lucky to have

my peers support me; they gave me tons of advice and even talked to me about what had worked in the past and what had

not. This experience has taught me a lot, not just in my Toastmasters career, but also in my work and personal life. I learned

that preparation is critical. Organization is a key component to success. Lastly, I learned that it is important to facilitate meet-

ings in an efficient way while exerting control over the proceedings where necessary to ensure each role is carried out appro-

    priately.

The VPPR, Rhea Simpson, advertises through Meetup, Twitter, and the Clubs FreeToastHost website. Meetup is a social

media platform that targets users in your locale with the same interests as you. Meetup has been a great tool to allow our

club to grow. When we ask guests how they heard about us, Meetup is the #1 answer, followed by the Toastmasters Find a

    Club tool.

The President, Todd Godfrey continuously provides helpful, supportive leadership for all of the clubs activities and fulfills the

mission of the club. The clubs mission is to provide a fun, supportive, and positive learning experience where members are

empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth. My

leadership philosophy on conducting an Open House is this is a chance to let the other officers and members showcase their

growth and appreciation for the club. It is an opportunity for them to shine and my job as President is to ensure that everyon

who wants to participate gets an opportunity. Its also time as a leader to heap praise on the efforts of the club and spotlight

individuals who rise above the crowd with their effort and contributions.

How are you using your accumulated experience and

yourToastmasters speaking skills? Having spent almost a dec-

ade "on the ground" in Laos and Cambodia, I have found an audi-ence with Vietnam era veterans. My stories, all honed in Toast-master club speeches, shed a new perspective on that part of theworld and the U.S. involvement there.

Last Saturday, I presented to an American Legion post in Hay-market , Virginia. What a wonderful group of veterans and theirfamilies. This was a speaking opportunity created by BarbaraOwens -the Lady in a Hat. Barbara has chartered two Toastmas-ters Clubs in Haymarket.

Paid or pro bono -take your speeches on the road. You will learnand grow, andyou will also share your unique experiences andmessages with appreciative audiences.
