BETWEEN US LIONSSVDG Ken Shahan

Hello, fellow Lions of District 29-I! Since Spring is ge5ng closer and closer everyday, this month we will be talking about planning for your Spring projects. Do youknow how to connect with your community and build your Lions Legacy? With ourCentennial Celebra3on just around the corner, our Interna3onal President has laidout a challenge for us. He is asking us to do something to connect with our commu-nity. One way your Club can commemorate the past century of service, while also

looking forward to the next 100 years, is to complete a Centennial Community Legacy Project. As a visible gi$, yourproject will serve as a las3ng reminder of just how vital your club is to the community. It could be a new sign at thecity’s limits, a new park bench, picnic shelter, or even a new Lion sign at the entrance to a new facility. There will bean opportunity for every club to get involved. There are three levels of Centennial Community Legacy Projects;choose from the project ideas below or create your own:

Level 1- Raise Your Community Visibility• Post new Lions signs• Donate a park bench• Dedicate a statue• Sponsor a fountain in a local park

Level 2 – Provide a Community Gi • Refurbish a park or playground• Build a footbridge over a nature pond• Donate a vehicle to a community organiza3on• Fund resources for the visually impaired

Level 3 – Make A Community Impact• Expand a library or school• Build a Clinic• Develop a training center• Equip an area hospital

Having your en3re club par3cipate in one or more of these projects will showcase yourservice impact to community and strengthen the bond between your members. Startbuilding your Lion Legacy by brainstorming at your next mee3ng. Meet with yourcommunity leaders or city council and ask them how the two of you can bring theseideas to frui3on.

For more informa3on, visit the Centennial Community Legacy Project on the LCI page. You may find more ideas on how to promote your special event and how to earn theLegacy Plaque for your project.

Be sure to report your project using the MyLCI Service Ac3vity Report.

LIONS CLUBS OF HARRISON COUNTY

Pictured (l-r): VDG Ken Shahan, Clarksburg Mission Directorof Opera3ons Becky Riffle & Execu3ve Director Chris Mulle4.

The Lions Clubs of Harrison County was formed in late 2014 to track and promote ac3vi3es conducted by Lionsin the County. It also provided an opportunity for Clubs to join together to conduct fund raising ac3vi3es tobenefit special causes. One of the main programs they support is the Backpack program which helps feedunderprivileged school children on weekends. The Lions of Harrison County also receives dona3ons from somelocal churches. They have a Facebook page which can be found by searching The LIONS of Harrison Co. OnJanuary 19th, 2nd VDG Ken Shahan of the Nu4er Fort Lions Club presented a check for $3000 to the ClarksburgMission Backpack program from the Lions of Harrison County. To date the LIons of Harrison County have donated$6700 to this worthwhile cause.

At the January 9th mee3ng of the Mul3ple District 29 Council of Governors we agreed to encourage Lions clubsin West Virginia to par3cipate with other states in a one day event on March 19th. The event is called LionsEyes Across (State Name). In West Virginia of course, it would be Lions Eyes Across West Virginia.

This is the result of discussions by District Governors Elect on ways to bring awareness, public interest, help thecommunity, increase membership and highlight Lionism. Clubs and districts could set up sites to meet andgreet the public with events to collect items such as:

• Clothing, toys, school supplies for youth• Used eyeglasses and do vision screenings etc. for all ages• Canned and non-perishable foods for local food banks• Cell phones, hearing aids

It would be great to partner with other local organiza3ons like the Salva3on Army, food banks, shelters etc.Actually you can do what you want to do as a Club or Zone to support this effort. This would be a greatopportunity to pass out informa3on about your Club to the public. Clubs could join together to hold the eventwhich is even more fun!

Once you decide what you want to do, it’s important you publicize your ac3vity with public serviceannouncements in your local media and prepare flyers and posters.Don’t forget to report your ac3vity onMyLCI and send me any photos or stories. Place Lions Eyes Across West Virginia on your calendar…March 19th.Please par3cipate, plan a meaningful event and have fun!
