PONTOTOC CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT ENROLLING WITH STOPit TO EMPOWER AND PROTECT STUDENTS

STOPit App empowers students to stand up against bullying

Pontotoc City School District has enrolled with STOPit, the leading technology platform for schools that deters and controls harmful or inappropriate conduct. STOPit empowers students with an easy app to safely and anonymously report anything of concern to school officials – from cyberbullying to threats of violence or self-harm. STOPit empowers students to stand up for themselves and others while giving our schools the insight we need to keep students safe. With STOPit, students can submit anonymous reports containing text, photos, or video. Administrators are then able to manage incidents in a backend management system called DOCUMENTit. DOCUMENTit provides efficient and powerful investigative tools to our staff, including the ability to message with the reporter, which will allow us to address issues instantly. STOPit does more than just help schools address incidents and mitigate risk. STOPit will also help us go beyond reacting to bullying and inappropriate behavior, and instead start deterring it. As young people continue to engage more with technology every day, we are taking a proactive step to empower our students to become Upstanders in our community in the way that they feel most comfortable. We believe our adoption of STOPit is an important step in our continued effort to provide a positive school climate and a safe learning environment for our students.

Chuck Spencer, instructor of the Itawamba Community College Heating and Air Conditioning Technology Program, visited on September 19th and spoke to students at Career Cafe. Students learned that the expected average starting salary for graduates in this program is $40,000 and the program has a 100% job placement rate. The September 26th Career Cafe will be hosted by Itawamba Community College's Early Childhood Education Program. Program instructor, Holly Kirk, will speak to students concerning careers in daycares, Headstart, and other preschool programs.

C A U T I O N : C R I M E L A B In Mrs. Smith’s Anatomy and Physiology class, students played the role of detectives in a local law enforcement agency who were trying to solve a murder. The first step was to search for the victim's remains in the designated areas. Once the skeletal remains were located, the students had to identify each piece of evidence and correctly place it into position with all of the other skeletal remains. Once all the possible evidence had been discovered, it was up to the "detectives" to determine cause of death. She is happy to report that justice prevailed in the case!

Science Ranks First in State

Considering the obstacles they faced in the 2017-2018 school year, for

Coach Christie Murray and Katelyn Anderson (Murray’s former student)

to have taught their 8th grade students all the way to the number one spot

on the MST2 assessment seems a modern day miracle. Due to a medical

setback, Coach Murray was out for three weeks in late March, which is

critical test preparation time. Anderson, in her first year with Pontotoc,

was at this time going back and forth between classes and at times

combining the two classes and teaching approximately 55 students at

once to ensure they would receive quality instruction. “The kids were

great,” Anderson said, “they knew what was expected of them and they did their part very well. They were always

respectful.” While Murray and Anderson were compliant in answering questions about their part in the process, they

were quick to note that they were only a key to a door, both noting that the kids were the ones to really make it all

happen. Anderson noted that the students knew they would be taking the title of first in the state as they had

consistently surpassed every goal that had been set for them for each benchmark assessment administered. Coach

Murray added, “They knew that we believed in them, which made them believe in themselves.” When it came closer

to time for the test, Mrs. Anderson explained to the students what being ranked first would mean--not first in 1A, or

5A like in sports, but first in the entire state over every school and the students knew they would be the ones to do it.

They had yet to back down from a challenge and this would not be the moment to start. When the time came, they rose

to the occasion as Pontotoc Junior High’s first 8th grade class to ever score first in the state. The standard has been set

high, as high as it can possibly be. Anderson and Murray said that for this year’s students, they know that our school is

already at the top and if they want to remain in that spot a lot of hard work will have to take place and they too will

have to rise to the challenge.

Last Tuesday night the Warriors took home an 18-0

victory in the A game over the Ripley Tigers in their first

Special Visitor

Ms. Luther’s third graders had a very special visitor this past week, Mrs. Earlie Cox. She is the wife of the late Mr. D.T. Cox. Mr. Cox was the former principal of D.T. Cox Elementary and our building was built under his direct guidance. We love when Mrs. Cox stops by to visit.

Problem solving at dtc

Janet Bland with the Mississippi Geographic Alliance recently visited the 3rd and 4th grade UFO students at DT Cox. She talked with the students about GPS (Global Positioning System) and GIS (Geographic

Information System). The students combined this information with a character building program from the Giraffe Project, focusing on improvements at DT Cox. The students walked around the campus with a hand-held GPS which tracked their steps as they looked for problems they could improve upon. One student, Eliza Lee McDowell, took this process even further when she and her family worked at the campus over the weekend cleaning out flower beds, planting strawberries, and giving our scarecrow a facelift! Eliza Lee was able to share with fellow students what she and her family had done. Thank you to the McDowell's for your hard work and taking

helpful action at our school!

Student council preliminaries Fourth Graders spent their computer lab time this past week viewing campaign speeches of their peers

who are running for Student Council offices. These candidates have worked super hard to gain votes by displaying posters and delivering their speeches. The final voting round will take place this week.

Good luck to all candidates!!

Special thanks to several donors to DTC! We have received pumpkins, shoes for children in need and pavers for each student to paint as part of our beautification project!! Stay tuned…...

Pontotoc Elementary School

Q and U Nuptials Held at Pontotoc Elementary

The 1st Grade Classes of Pontotoc Elementary are happy to announce the marriage of the letters Q and U. The ceremony took place on Friday, the 14th of September, in the Commons. The bride wore a glitter Q and the groom wore a shiny, black U. All female attendants wore QU headpieces and male attendants wore QU bowties. The ceremony was performed by Dr. Ken Hester of First Baptist Church, and quarters were exchanged by the bride and groom. Their vows are as follows: “I, Miss Q, promise to take U with me everywhere I go. And to have U stand beside me in all the words I will make.” “I, Mr. U, promise to follow Q everywhere you go, and to stand beside you in words that you make, even though I can make words of my own.” They promised to form words like quiz, quilt, and quest. Then they sealed the marriage with a HIGH FIVE! Each class had a lovely reception following the ceremony.

Community Soup  Community helpers is one of my favorite units to do with my kindergarteners. They learn what a community is and how all the different people work together to help others. I also have parents to help with our "community soup" day (vegetable soup, grill cheese sandwiches, and dessert). The students enjoy eating in the room. They also enjoyed dresses as their favorite community helper or the community helper they would like to be when they grow up. We had a blast! Mrs. Melissa Parmer

Noun Town

For the last two weeks, the class has studied different kinds of nouns. We have discussed common, proper, collective, and possessive nouns. I sent home a pre-made packet that asked students to create a person, place, thing, and an animal. This allowed them to use any material they had at home to decorate and be creative. Once it was returned on Friday, we created a Noun Town using all these types of nouns. We used different color sticky notes to label the nouns. Pink was for proper nouns. Green was for possessive nouns. Yellow was for collective nouns. Blue was for common nouns. As we labeled each noun we discussed why it was that type of noun. For example, each person was either a boy or a girl which is a common noun but when we named them they were considered proper nouns. Mrs. Russell

Community Helper Parade

Thursday, our Kindergarten students had a parade! They dressed up as community helpers, and paraded through the school. The first and second graders got to see them in action as they walked. Afterwards, they had an assembly where they told the crowd what kind of community helper they were and want to be!
