70th Anniversary of the liberation of Holland.

If you’ve ever visited the Netherlands, you know how much they love Canadians and what Canadian soldiers did there 70 years ago has never been forgotten, our troops liberated their country from the Nazis.

To mark the 70th aniversary of the liberation of Holland from the Nazi forces, our very own Victor Vinenga organised an event at the Durham Christian Homes here in town

It was a very moving ceremony with speakers from all walks of life

This convention can be summed up in three words, cold, winding and expensive

(hamburger at $19.00!).

The total registration for the convention was 1399 with 615 delegates in actual

attendance.

The results of the Provincial elections are as follows:

President Brian Weaver

1st Vice President Sharon McKeown

Prov. Vice Presidents Ken Sorrenti

Derrick Moore

Gerry Pond

Hon. Prov. Treasurer Don Hobbs

Chairman Bill Chafe

Vice Chairman Ron Goebel

One notable change in the Provincial by-laws:

S.920 The Branch Poppy Committee Chairman shall be one (1) of three (3) signing

officers for the disbursement of the Poppy Trust Fund Account.

There were 11 resolutions that were carried at this convention that will be brought forward

to the Dominion convention in 2016. The most notable being that the Branches be able to

cover funeral costs of a veteran who does not qualify for Last Post funding and has shown

need , the funds to come from the Poppy Trust. This resolution must still be approved at

Dominion convention.

Sports resolutions that passed at the Provincial level, Washer Toss in now an approved

Provincial sport, Legion golf will now have a women’s division and there will be a Seniors

darts program for those over 55.

An interesting fact; since 2011 the Ontario Branches have donated a total of

Some of funds that were raised;

RCEL $21938.00

Legion Selects Winners of Poster and Literary Contests

OTTAWA, ON, May 8th 2015 The Royal Canadian Legion, announced the winners of the Legion’s Poster and Literary Contests today at Dominion Command. “Since 1960, the Legion has been sponsoring Poster and Literary contests in its efforts to perpetuate Remembrance among all Canadians,” says Dominion President of The Royal Canadian Legion, Tom Eagles. “I am pleased to report that, this past year approximately 100,000 primary, junior, intermediate and senior students participated in these national contests and I wish to thank and congratulate each of the participants and winners for their outstanding work and interest in Remembrance and our Veterans,” states Eagles. Participants represent youth from all areas of the country, in both official languages, and span the various cultural mixes that make up the family mosaic of Canada. “This is yet another example of an activity the Legion is proud to engage in on behalf of all Canadians and highlights the diversity of Legion activities in our communities,” adds Eagles.

About the Poster and Literary Contests

The contests are divided into four categories: Primary (Poster Contest only) – grades 1,2 and 3; Junior – grades 4, 5 and 6; Intermediate – grades 7, 8 and 9; and Senior – grades 10, 11, 12. The contests are organized by Legion branches with schools in their area and the winning entries progress through various levels at the Legion with the final entries being forwarded to Legion national headquarters in Ottawa where they are judged and the national winners declared. Regarding the Literary Contest, participants are asked to submit an essay/composition or a poem with a Remembrance theme. Submissions are accepted in either French or English and are marked on the basis of originality of thought, expression, presentation, grammar and spelling. The Poster Contest participants are asked to submit their work in either black & white or colour format with the theme of Remembrance and what it represents to them. Similar to the Literary Contest, submissions are marked based on originality, expression and presentation. Plaques will be awarded to the national winners in each category and to the winners’ schools. Each of the first place winners in the senior category will also win a trip for two to attend the National Remembrance Day Ceremony held in Ottawa on November 11th, 2015 where they will place a wreath on behalf of the Youth of Canada. They will also have an opportunity to visit and meet with the Governor General and others in the Vice-Regal Party during this visit. The Senior winning entries in both the Literary and Poster Contests will also be displayed at the Canadian War Museum between July 1st, 2015 and May 1st, 2016. The second place winners and any participant receiving an Honourable Mention will be displayed in the foyer of the House of Commons during the annual Remembrance Day period in November 2015.

Anyone wishing to speak with this year’s winners or for further information regarding this contest is asked to contact Bruce Poulin at Dominion Command, The Royal Canadian Legion, at 1-613-591-3335 ext. 241 or by cell at 1-613-292-8760 or [email protected].

Legion Acknowledges 15th Anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

OTTAWA, ON, May 28th, 2015 – The Royal Canadian Legion acknowledges the 15th anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier today. “People seem to have forgotten that the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was a Legion initiative which was part of the federal government’s Millennium Project coinciding with the Legion’s 75th Anniversary,” says Dominion President of The Royal Canadian Legion, Tom Eagles. The ceremony, held on Sunday May 28th 2000, was the culmination of two years of planning launched by the Legion in April 1998 and culminating with the disinterment of an unknown Canadian soldier from the Cabaret-Rouge Cemetery, France on May 25th 2000. “As part of our Mission, the Legion strives to ensure that those who paid the ultimate sacrifice are not forgotten. Whether it is through our promotion and organization of the national Remembrance Day Ceremony and other events across the country, our annual Poppy Campaign or the creation and care of memorials like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier,” adds Eagles. “We honour the past and almost 116,000 Canadians who have, thus far, made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of their country,” states Eagles. On Sunday May 28th 2000, the body of the Unknown Soldier was transported to the National War Memorial on a horse-drawn RCMP gun carriage. He was followed by more than 1,000 Veterans – one of the largest contingents of Veterans seen in many years. Then with full military honours, before a crowd of 15,000 the casket was re-interned in a sarcophagus in front of the National War Memorial. Before the casket was sealed, Legionnaires placed a handful of soil from each of Canada’s provinces and territories, as well as from the soldier’s former grave site on the casket. It is worth noting that Canadians spontaneously began placing Poppies on the tomb at the conclusion of the National Remembrance Day Ceremony and it has become a tradition to this day. While the Legion, with the support of other Veterans organizations, could recommend that a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier should be established at the National War Memorial, approval to do so rested in the hands of others. Indeed, a number of government agencies held responsibility for various aspects of the project and included Veterans Affairs Canada; Department of National Defence; Public Works and Government Services Canada; the Commonwealth War Graves Commission; and the National Capital Commission. To mark this important event the Dominion Executive Council (DEC) approved the design and distribution of a “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier” pin that is approved for Legion members to wear between November 1st 2015 and November 30th 2016. Legion members wishing to purchase this pin, while supplies last, are invited to visit our online store: www.shop.legion.ca6 or by calling toll free to 888-301-2268. Cenotaph Restoration

Of Whitby's known 257 men and women who participated in the First World War, 43 men lost their lives. When the Whitby Branch of the Great War Veterans' Association was formed in 1920, they began raising funds to erect a war memorial to honour these fallen local soldiers.

The land on which the Cenotaph stands at Dundas and Green Streets was given to the club by Ontario County Judge and once-leader of the Home Guard Theodore McGillivray. The Cenotaph was erected in 1923 with the names of local soldiers who were killed in the First World War. It also included plaques commemorating the 116th and 182nd Battalions. In 1924, the citizens of Whitby attended the Cenotaph's dedication ceremony led by Lieutenant-Governor Harry Cockshutt. It has been the site for Whitby's Remembrance Day commemorations since then.

Nailed it…

Lost It…

By: Capt. G.N. Hildebrandt, While stationed in Bosnia, we launched an operation to collect leftover war weapons from civilians. After a particularly good haul from one home, the sergeant in charge joked that they'd be back later to pick up the tank. The owner sheepishly led him to a shed behind the house. There stood a T-55 tank in perfect working order.

By: Sgt. P.R.P. Lublink, (Ret'd) One Sunday morning not long after I was posted to CFB Borden, Ontario, for temporary duty, I was hitchhiking from the base chapel back to my quarters. After a car picked me up, the driver offered to make a small detour and take me right to my front door. As we drove, my Samaritan told me that hitchhiking on base was prohibited and I was lucky the Base Chief Warrant Officer hadn't caught me or I'd have been given extra duties and confined to barracks. I admitted I was unaware of the regulation and thanked him for the advice. Just before he dropped me off, I asked who he was. My new base commander, he said.
