As I say every year, she is Not getting older - just getting better! 2019 was a year of continued upgrades, as is every year, to keep her current and shipshape for training. In 2019 the improvements and upgrades were modest in comparison with previous years, but still help make our Michaela be the best she can be. We purchased a nice new AB aluminum RIB and out - board motor and retired the old. And to make anchoring easier, we installed a wireless remote for the windlass. Coming up in 2020 is a new hydraulic steering cylinder and we are installing a Stack Pack on the mainsail to greatly simplify sail handling! All of this improves our Michaela and means that students won’t be sailing on an old, tired vessel. As in the last few years, all of our courses were full. We did 10 weeks in the water with 8 practical courses, 1 Yachtmaster prep week and one mile builder. A busy summer! New Instructors We were joined this year by RYA Cruising Instructors Roger Harris and Denis Mongeau, who taught some Day Skipper/ Comp. Crew courses. They both have an incredible amount of sailing and teaching experience and their students gave them great feedback. I am happy to say that they will be with us again in 2020! Taking one of these courses will help a lot with your practical course. DISCOVERY SAILING 2019 REVIEW

RYA Yachtmaster Training

A large part of our sail training is the preparation and examina-tion of sailors for the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal and Off-shore Certificates of Competence. In 2019 we conducted one 5-day prep week, followed by the exams. We expect to be running two Prep weeks/exams again in 2020. It is expected that the dates for these will become available late February. Finally, Dave, in his role as an RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Examiner, conducted two groups of Yachtmaster exams in Ontario, and one Yachtmaster Ocean oral exam.

Mile Builders These are a good way to help solidify your skills and gain some mileage with good coaching thrown in. We did one mile builder in 2019; a coastal passage along the Nova Scotia coast. There will be at least one in 2020 - keep checking the schedule to see where and when.

Halifax Boat Show 2020

Come see us at booth 706, right next to the pub. February 6-9. I will not be there but Jack Barrett and others will be capably look-ing after the shop.

Photo is of Jack and Dave at the 2019 show. Jack is the good-looking guy on the right.

All the best for 2020!

How about You?

What’s new with your boating life? We want to know! We would really like to hear about your adventures (or mis-adven-tures) since you were on Michaela. Have you got a new boat? Done a real interesting cruise? Discovered a better way to do some things? Please let us know!

RYA Yachtmaster In-structor Conference

Dave will be attending the RYA Yachtmaster Instructor Confer-ence in Reading, UK, in February 2020. As usual, he gets lots of new ideas to enhance the train-ing and stay current. The only problem is that it co-insides with the dates of the Halifax Boat Show, so Dave has capable oth-ers to look after the booth.

A newly discovered bird on our bow. It is a blue docklinus chafe-protectorus!

Thanks to the photographers!
