Training for EducatorsWXXI offers 100+ certified workshops a year to teachers, school staff, librarians, childcare providers, and informal educators. Participants learn how to integrate public media to support
student inquiry, spark curiosity, present concepts and demonstrate and practice skills with early childhood and school age students.
Partnering with the New York State Education Department, WXXI’s Finger Lakes Regional Adult Education Network
offers training for adult literacy educators in the 9 county region. Teachers are certified in best practices to help their students improve English and math skills, become citizens, attain a high school equivalency and learn new job skills.
WXXI engages the community by partnering around important regional issues using programming, special events, digital content, and community partner resources. Current initiatives include:
Veterans Connections helps to bridge military and veteran needs with community support and awareness. WXXI partners with area veterans and community groups to provide related screenings, performances and community talkbacks. Participants connect to veterans’ resources & events through a website directory at wxxi.org/veterans
Opioid Crisis Resources is a collection of on-demand WXXI and public media productions, current WXXI news stories and community resources. WXXI’s Second Opinion Video Toolkit provides tools and resources for organizations to host their your own community conversation events. wxxi.org/opioid
Move to Include is a partnership with the Golisano Foundation designed to promote inclusion for people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Through programming and special events, WXXI is building a more inclusive community by inspiring and motivating people to embrace different abilities and include all people in every aspect of community life. wxxi.org/include
Community Screenings: WXXI provides free screenings of public media programs and films followed by talkbacks including local partners to explore topics and the impact on the community. Showcases like The Rochester Teen Film Festival give young filmmakers the opportunity to have their voices heard. Many of these programs are held at the Little Theatre. wxxi.org/events
Community Issues Engagement
Family EngagementWXXI partners with schools, libraries, museums, out of school programs, and community organizations to offer informal family learning experiences. From parent workshops to fun-filled family events, WXXI staff model ways to use public media, books, activities and everyday opportunities to expand young children’s learning.
Learning Resources and Online SupportWXXI provides families and educators with PBS LEARNINGMEDIA NY, a free research-based online tool with tens of thousands of standards-aligned educational
media offerings, activities, lesson plans and free PBS KIDS Apps. WXXI-produced video collections are added to PBS LearningMedia to create needed content in STEM, careers, the arts and inclusion topics.
The WXXI Kids 24/7 channel streaming service provides
anywhere, anytime access to quality research-based children’s
programming across mobile devices & family movie nights
with activities to connect learning beyond the
broadcast.
Two New PBS KIDS Series and Returning Favorites: Two new series, one focused on informational text for kids ages 4-8 and one focused on science inquiry for kids ages 3-5, are in production. The Ready to Learn grant is also funding new science and literacy-based episodes and digital learning resources from Ready Jet Go! and The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!
