Introduction

The Keene State College Alumni Association is a dynamic organization, providing (currently) a

limited menu of benefits and services to more than 27,000 alumni. The Association, which

promotes the interest of alumni and Keene State College, offers such benefits to a) provide a

service, and b) to offer an incentive for staying connected to their alma mater, with the hope that

such interest will lead to an investment of time, talent, or treasure.

Goals of the Proposal The current schedule of benefits and services has not changed significantly over the past several

years. This proposal recommends the implementation of several new initiatives that will meet the

needs of a growing and diversified alumni population, while matching the goals of the College’s

and the Association’s strategic plans:

A Strategic Plan for Keene State College, 2007-2011

Goal 2. To clearly and continuously communicate our mission and values in all that we

undertake, and to foster a strong sense of community on campus in pursuit of academic

excellence.

Strategy 3: Valuing all members of our community: students, faculty, staff, alumni,

and friends.

• A new Alumni Center creation will provide an accessible facility

to support programming that keeps alums connected to the College.

Keene State College Alumni Association Strategic Plan: 2007-2009

Strategic Initiative 1: Promote and advance the College's strategic plan through the

Alumni Association's programs, services, and communications.

Strategic Measures

• Create partnerships with College departments/units that accentuate alumni as

valued resources of time, talent, and treasure

Expanded KSC Bookstore Discounts

This proposal seeks to provide expanded discounts at the KSC Bookstore.

Currently alumni receive a 10% discount at the KSC Bookstore during Homecoming and

Reunion Weekends only. This proposal seeks to provide alumni with a 10% discount anytime

they are on campus. To receive the 10% discount, alumni would be required to show an Alumni

membership card at the time of purchase.

Use of Recreation Center Facilities

This proposal seeks to provide use of Recreation Center facilities, including the indoor track,

courts, and fitness center.

Current KSC Alumni Spaulding Gym/Recreation Center Usage Policy

KSC alumni may receive a Spaulding Gym membership only. The spouse or same-sex domestic

partner of a KSC alumnus is also eligible to sign up for a Spaulding Gym membership. The

Spaulding Gym membership allows the alumnus or spouse/same-sex domestic partner access to

the swimming pool during Recreational Sports’ designated swim time and use of the racquetball

court. All Recreational Sports’ policies regarding use of the swimming pool and racquetball

court must be adhered to. The KSC alumni and his/her spouse or same-sex domestic partner will

receive the Spaulding Gym membership card once a Recreational Sports’ membership

application is completed. The KSC alumnus must show their alumni card to the Recreational

Sports personnel before he/she can receive the membership card. KSC alumni may also obtain a

child pass for children, age 17 and under, to use the swimming pool. The child must remain with

the parent at all times.

Page 7: Directors Report.BenefitsAndServices

Recreational Sports cannot sell memberships to KSC alumni to use any of the areas (weight

room, cardio room, jogging track, recreation gym, aerobics studio or multipurpose rooms, etc.) in

the Recreation Center. The Recreation Center is fully funded by student fees, which pay back

the Higher Education bonds purchased by the college to build the facility. Because Keene State

College is identified as a “not-for-profit, tax-exempt” state school, Recreational Sports cannot

sell memberships to anyone who does not have a “direct business relationship” with Keene State

(e.g., faculty, staff, students, etc.).

Proposed KSC Alumni Recreation Center Usage Policy, Schedule, and Fee Structure

The KSC Alumni Association proposes a limited use policy to include the weight room, cardio

room, jogging track, recreation gym, aerobics studio, or multipurpose rooms, etc. with a valid

Alumni membership card and gym membership card according to the following schedule:

Academic Year (August-May)

Monday-Friday: 6-10 a.m. and 6-11p.m.

Saturday & Sunday: 10 a.m.-11 p.m.

Summer Session (May-August)

Monday-Thursday: 6 a.m.-9 p.m.

Friday: 6 a.m.-9 p.m.

Saturday & Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Proposed Fee Structure

It is recommended that an appropriate fee structure be developed by Recreation Center staff

based on additional projected operating costs. The KSC Alumni Association proposes a limited

use fee structure that is in line with rates charged to faculty/staff for use of the building (e.g.

including those reimbursed through Harvard Pilgrim HMO plans).

Background

According to the current policy, Recreational Sports cannot sell memberships to KSC alumni to

use any of the areas (weight room, cardio room, jogging track, recreation gym, aerobics studio or

multipurpose rooms, etc.) in the Recreation Center. It is suggested (1) the Recreation Center is

funded by student fees, which pay the Higher Education bonds purchased by the College to build

the facility. Because Keene State College is identified as (2) a “not-for-profit, tax-exempt” state

school, Recreational Sports cannot sell memberships to anyone who (3) does not have a “direct

business relationship” with Keene State College (e.g. faculty, staff, students, etc.).

For Consideration

(1) the Recreation Center is funded by student fees, which pay the Higher Education bonds

purchased by the College to build the facility

a. Alumni living in the area have repeatedly expressed an interest in usage of the

facility [Addendum B: Summary of Alumni Correspondence Regarding Usage

of Recreation Center], many of whom are recent graduates, and who, as students,

paid students fees, which helped to pay for the building

i. In a phone conversation with the Director of Athletics at Fitchburg State

College (Mass.), it was offered that, “even students who paid for their

Page 8: Directors Report.BenefitsAndServices

campus’ facility in 1996 through student fees deserved to use the building,

as much as, if not more than, current students.”

b. While the Recreation Center may indeed have been paid for by students fees,

many of the programs, services, and activities within the building, have benefited

from the support of the KSC Alumni Association Grants Program totaling

$21,850 to athletic department programs, affiliated student organizations, and

teams from FY 1999-2000 to present [Addendum C: Summary of Alumni

Support (FY 1999-2000 to Present) to Athletics/Recreation Center and Affiliated

Organizations]

(2) the College is identified as a “not-for-profit, tax-exempt” state school

a. Other state colleges throughout New England [Addendum D: Usage of

Recreational Facilities at New England State Colleges], while paying off bonds

through student fees, also generate revenues through the availability of alumni

(and guest) memberships

b. The College’s status as a 501(c)3 organization has not been called into question

while offering:

i. Guest rooms in the Barry Alumni Center, including faculty, and students

ii. Facility rental at the College Camp on Wilson Pond

c. The College Camp on Wilson Pond (renovated in 1999, supported entirely

through alumni contributions) is rented to faculty, staff, students, alumni, as well

as other for-profit and not for-profit organizations and private individuals who do

not necessarily have a “direct business relationship” with Keene State

i. Could the College clarify its policy regarding students’use of building paid

for by alumni, and alumni usage of buildings paid for by students/bonds?

ii. Were Mason Library and the Redfern Arts Center (to which alumni have

access) paid for through student fees/bonds?

(3) direct business relationship with Keene State

a. The College recognizes the KSC Alumni Association as a partner of the

institution, as evidenced by its support of an authority as outlined in existing

contracts with the following affinity partners:

i. Bank of America [Addendum E]

ii. Liberty Mutual [Addendum F]

1. Both organizations use similar language within their respective

contracts, stating “This agreement is entered into between

(organization) and Keene State College Alumni Association, an

authorized organization of Keene State College…”

2. Article IV (Administration) of the Alumni Association’s Articles

of Association state, “The Keene State College Alumni

Association is a dependent affiliate of the College.”

3. Article I (Membership), Section 1 of the Alumni Association’s

By-Laws state, “The Association shall consist of Active and

Honorary Members. Further, Article I, Section 2 defines Active

Members: Active members shall be (a) graduates of Keene

Normal School, Keene Teachers College or Keene State College

and (b) any former students of the College who were enrolled as

matriculated students and who completed the equivalent of one full

academic year as a candidate for a degree, diploma or certificate.

Continuing Education Discounts

This proposal seeks to develop a partnership between the Offices of Alumni and Parent Relations

and Continuing Education that would offer discounts for Continuing Education programs to

alumni.

Overview:

Page 10: Directors Report.BenefitsAndServices

Proposed Benefits: Off-Campus

Local (Keene) merchant discounts

Page 11: Directors Report.BenefitsAndServices

Proposed Benefits: Special Offers

Short-term health care

Discounted computer/media equipment

Short-Term Health Insurance (Gap Insurance)

This proposal seeks to develop an affinity partnership that would offer a short term medical

product to KSC alumni.

Overview: The Office of Alumni and Parent Relations has requested proposals from two

companies (Meyer and Associates and American Insurance Administrators) for the consideration

of delivery of a short-term major medical insurance product that would offer competitive rates

and can provide the security of health insurance for new graduates who are still seeking work or

not yet eligible for health benefits. The program is also ideal for alumni who find themselves

between jobs or temporarily without health coverage.

As with the existing partnership with Liberty Mutual, the finalized contract would provide a

royalty/commission (percentage of new and/or renewed policies) returned to the Alumni

Association based on an agreed to formula negotiated by the KSC Purchasing Office and

approved vendor.

Computer/Equipment Discounts

This proposal seeks to develop an affinity partnership with GovConnections, a wholly-owned

subsidiary of PC Connection and one of the nation’s leading IT providers, to offer KSC alumni

discounts on more than 130,000 of the latest technology products they want and need.

Overview: Alumni will benefit from discounts on a wide variety of IT products, from laptops

and printers to digital cameras, flat panel televisions, software, and more. The KSC Alumni

Association will realize a rebate fee based on volume of net purchases [Note: see attached

proposal].

Additionally, the KSC Alumni Office will collaborate with academic departments to select items

for promotion that will have an appeal based on major or field of specialization.

Page 12: Directors Report.BenefitsAndServices

Proposed Benefits: Online

EBSCO Online journal database

This proposal seeks to provide KSC alumni with access to thousands of journals and magazines

through a joint arrangement between the KSC Alumni Association, the KSC Mason Library and

EBSCO, a major provider of online journals and magazines.

The databases include the EBSCO Academic Search Alumni Edition and EBSCO Business

Source Alumni Edition. Alumni would have free full-text access to more than 4,700 scholarly

journals and magazines covering a wide range of disciplines. In addition, access to indexes and

abstracts would be available for more than 12,000 additional journals and magazines.
