Welcome to the November 2009 Digital Scrapper Premier!

With October behind us, the holiday season is officially in full swing.

Does that scare you or fill you with excitement? For me it’s some of both. I have several albums I want to complete as gifts before the end of the year, and I’m looking at the days slipping away. Guess I’d better get started, huh?

New Style of Kit

This month we’re introducing a new style of kit by Jill Means. It’s meant to be a graphic style kit, so leave your drop shadows behind and try out something new and fun!

Another way to work with the kit is to make a hybrid page—part graphic and part layered traditionally. For example, on this page I made the entire background with no drop shadows. Then I placed

some mats and photos with drop shadows on the page. Just be sure to keep the two parts clearly separate.

This month’s Premier gallery is filled with wonderful fairies and colorful autumn leaves, and my top pick, “A teensy Fairy Tale” by jschardt, is a magical blend of both. Jschardt has created a real work of art. Starting with beautiful photos, she added some fluttery wings, scattered some fairy dust, slipped all of this into a lovely custom shape page design, and finished off the page with a personalized fairy tale.

Even the whimsical font in the title adds to the magical feel of the layout. Thanks, jschardt, for sharing this enchanting digital scrapbook page with us!

I graduated from Brigham Young University in graphic design and have been working as a graphic designer for over 12 years. I’m the owner of Jill Means Design and my experience includes corporate identity, advertising, print collateral, packaging, and web design.

In 2009, I launched Legacy Digital Design as a source for photo templates, digital scrapbooking, and custom design. I am married to Scott and we have five children, ages 12, 11, 9, 7, and 3. We live in Lodi, California.

How did you get started in digital scrapbooking?

“I’ve never actually been a ‘scrapbooker.’ I was always so busy with my family and my business that I couldn’t really get into it, and I couldn’t imagine spending hours cropping and pasting when I was so used to doing everything on the computer. Once digital printing companies came around, I started printing photo books, but I couldn’t find many products that reflected my clean, graphic style. So... I started creating my own designs.”

Why did you start Legacy Digital Design?

“Family. My family is the most important thing to me. I have a passion for showcasing family heritage, memories and values in my home and creating meaningful gifts for my family and friends. Everyone wants to create and celebrate family events and memories. I hope my designs can help others accomplish that in a beautiful way.”

Jenny BinderMeet our new Tutorial Instructor:

I was born and raised in a small town in the southeast corner of Nebraska, attended Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, and moved to the Missouri countryside in 1992 after marrying my handsome farmer husband. We have three small children who are the subject of most of my personal scrapbook pages and photo sessions. My days are filled with homeschooling my children, helping at church, and trying to keep the dishes and laundry caught up...a task I rarely accomplish! (Some days I'm doing well if I get my teeth brushed!)

My scrapbooking adventure began in 2000 when I purchased a small fortune of paper scrapbooking supplies and set to work. Although I enjoyed paper scrapbooking, I started investigating the digital side with an idea to start a business creating family Heritage albums. The ability to create one album and print multiple copies seemed like an incredible advantage. The more I learned digital, the more frustrating paper scrapbooking became. Eventually I sold most of that small fortune of paper supplies at a garage sale and on eBay, and have never looked back.

One of my greatest passions is sharing the adventure of digital scrapbooking with others. As I learn new skills and "tricks", I love to share them with anyone who will listen. I am excited to have the opportunity to share my "tricks" with you as a Premier Instructor. It is my hope you will have as much fun as I do, and learn something along the way!

Strokes on Steroids

Creating double stroke outlines around unusual shapes can be a bit challenging. Learn a few tricks on how to keep corners sharp and retain the integrity of the shape by modifying the selections. The Photoshop version also contains instructions on how to make a dotted stroke outline on a path.

In my video, Extraordinary Edges, I create a card with a soft edge and use a seal from the Life’s Little Celebrations kit. You can also make your own seal with a double row of type in a circle. Here’s how:

Step 1: Create a square document twice the size of the finished seal. Type two lines of text across the center of the document, with one line larger than the other. Your type should extend to the edge of your document with one space at the end, but no further.

Select both type layers and open the Layers panel flyout menu. Choose Duplicate Layers, and click OK to the dialog box that comes up. Then open the flyout menu again and choose Merge Layers. Click on the eye of the two original type layers to make them temporarily invisible. You’ll want them available if you need to make any adjustments later.

Step 2: With the merged type layer selected, press Ctrl T (Mac: Cmd T) to get the Transform tool. Change the height percentage in the Options Bar to 200% and click OK.

Rotate the image 180°. In Photoshop choose Edit > Transform > Rotate 180°. In Photoshop Elements choose Image > Rotate > Layer 180°.

Step 3: Choose Filter > Distort > Polar Coordinates. Select Rectangular to Polar, and click OK.

Step 4: Add one large word in the center with a fancy font or put a photo in the center.

Step 5: Place a circle behind the type and decorate as desired!
