FRANKFURT BOOK FAIRIs it October already? What are the current hot topics? What does theclassroom of the future look like? And the lecture hall? Our Blog revolves around the Book Fair, providing a preview and setting the mood. Andconveying a real live feeling during the five days of the Fair in October. What is guaranteedis a brief taste of the approximately 3,000 events covering hundreds of subjects.

Turning over a new (digital) leafFrankfurt  first-timers  digitalleaf  couldn’t  be  happier.

The  digital  start  up  that  specialises  in  children’s  apps

and  books  –  and  also  develops  apps  for  other

publishers  –  is  enjoying  the  best  fair  it  could  have

hoped  for.    ”It’s  been  fantastic,”  said  co-founder  Neil

Jeffries  (left).    ”We’d  been  to  Bologna  and  London

before,  just  to  have  a  look  and  talk  to  people,  but  we’d

never  been  to  Frankfurt  or  had  a  stand.    We  were

really  just  coming  to  launch  ourselves  and  to  see  if  we

can  sell  North  American  rights  in  our  titles,  and  find  a

distributor  in  South  Africa.    But  passing  traffic  has  led  us  in  all  sorts  of  happy,  unexpected  directions.    We’ve

been  discussing    Turkish  rights  in  one  of  our  titles  and  a  South  African  publisher  wants  us  to  develop  three

apps  for  them  –  all  of  which  is  great.”

The  South-west  London-based  start-up,  which  began  life  in  April  2011,    as  yet  only  has  a  small  number  of

titles,  produced  as  apps,  ibooks  and  printed  books,  but  already  seems  to  be  punching  above  its  weight.    In

fact,  it  is  so  confident  that  it  has  even  brought  one  of  its  authors,  Anita  Pouroulis  (pictured)  to  the  Fair  as  well.

Despite  the  problems  of  discoverability  on  the  app  store,  one  of  its  titles  was  picked  in  the  UK  Daily

Telegraph‘s  list  of  top  children’s  apps,  and  very  shortly  all  the  apps  will  be  available  on  Android  too.

Jeffries  background  is  in  digital  children’s  marketing,  while  his  co-founder  Dustin  Brooks  (above,  right)    used

to  be  a  copywriter  for  children’s  media  and  now  uses  his  social  media  skills  to  counter  the  discoverability

problem.    UK  bookshop  sales  is  being  handled  by  Gillian  Hawkins,  a  name  familiar  to  many  in  the  UK.    And  as

to  starting  in  a  recession,  Jeffries  brushes  it  aside.    ”The  last  12  months  has  been  very  good  –  we’re  enjoying

ourselves.”
